[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

Haha, there are lots of amateurs posing as professional hockey people in the NHL.  Hopefully we got rid of ours.

Of course there have been players who have ridden out the last year of their contract and then were traded at the deadline. Some were even left not to be traded and eventually signed with another tran as a UFA in the summer. Canucks fans know this scenario all too well.

Amateur hour is over in Vancouver. Francesco brought in the big boys to take this team to the next level. I highly doubt the big boys are going to make the same mistakes as the previous regime. If they do their really is no hope. We are doomed for mediocrity for a lifetime.

I wouldn’t say a lifetime. But it’ll be for a really long time, and we’d need another rebuild if current management &^@#s the Miller situation up. Who’s going to want to stay? Bo? No way, if they screw up the Miller situation, that could change Bo’s perception of where the franchise is headed. What about Elias? Hughes? It just kinds of falls like dominoes, and changes the narrative.

Here’s hoping that, it doesn’t happen, of course.

John Marino  81G  1G, 24A  25PTS  6'1 180 lbs   6th round pick

The Canucks need two big, mean, defenseman on the right side.  Young Luke Shenns.  Not another small defenseman.

Wasn’t Marino drafted by the Oilers?

These big 'old' boys. What timeline are they thinking for us to become contender calibre?

Ownership family....my buddy used to date Alana...remember hearing Luigi wants to see a cup. How old is that guy now? must be about 90.

JR said he wanted to compete in 2 years.  That was when he was first hired.  Hopefully that timeline has not changed.

The Aquilini family is a great hockey family.  They've been season ticket holders since the 1970's.  They used to live 3 blocks from the old Pacific Coliseum back in the day.  Luigi is in his 80's.  His wife Elisa passed away many years ago.  Francesco named one of his restaurants after his mother.  I am sure Luigi wants to see a Cup before he goes.  That is the plan I think.

And who replaces the 100 points we took off the roster?

The offense probably takes a dip this coming season if Miller is traded. Either that, or certain players will have to raise their games even more, like Petey, Podkolzin, Höglander, Bo, etc.

I suspect that the Canucks will need to get a RHD coming back and a young forward who can contribute to the team, or at least draft one that’s ready to contribute to the NHL team.

Yes, he could have help them.

Man, Edmonton has been so bad so long. Made a lot of bad decisions.

We had Benning for a time, and that has to be one of the darkest seasons of this franchise, but Edmonton has been bad even prior to Benning’s arrival. Marino could have definitely helped the Oilers.

That’s the average yes.

But he is capable and can handle up to 30 minutes on certain nights. That’s the point.

Can Marino be that player? I’m not sold.

Bob, Tanev NEVER played 30 minutes last year, not even one single game.  He hit 25 minutes once in a playoff game.  No way he could ever handle 30 minutes.  His body isn't built for that...

not to mention the return from a trade will add to the point total.  But, really, they don't necessarily need to replace points if they balance the rster and improve the dcorp........by preventing goals, the net result is the same as "replacing" points.

It's worth noting that Marino played 25+ minutes 6 times this last season. 4 times in the regular season and twice in the playoffs. In one of those playoff games he logged over 29 minutes of ice time (The Pens won that game btw).

I watched that whole series and though Marino was good, he wasn't overly noticeable either.  He's a decent 4/5 dman who could jump to a 3d

Because Calgary has D depth and Sutter spreads minutes.

He was playing that here and would have to with our lack of depth.

You continue to argue about minutes and ignore the fact that Marino is not a top pair guy.

Even Tanev in his prime wouldn’t have fetched a 100 point player. Even if you added a pick and a prospect. It’s bad value no matter how you slice it.

Imagine drafting first overall on 4 separate occasions and still having one of the worst prospect pipelines in the entire NHL.

I never said Marino was a top pairing guy.  You are confusing me with somebody else...  :)

Good second pair guy that can play up.

Good player, not good enough for the best player we would be trading in a long time. It needs to be a franchise changing return otherwise no thanks.

The Pen fans on HF consider him their number 3, and a defensive specialist isn't supposed to be overly noticeable. That's kinda the point. Unless he was blocking a shot, Tanev was never the most noticeable player on the ice.

What is your suggestion for fixing our right side then?

Tanev almost never, plays anywhere close to 25 minutes. He's a +/-20 minutes D, who's first pair and a really good defensemen, can PK etc who pairs well with an offensive guy like Hughes. Even if he's not a "25 minute" guy.

Marino is basically a younger clone.

Feel free to adjust your perspective. It's ok.

Marino would allow Hughes to be more offensive minded too.  Likely Hughes is 80+ points with Marino.  I don’t know how Hughes managed the season he did considering Schenn was his partner (5 on 5) for so much of the season.  Schenn is okay, but he’s not a Devon Toews or Tanev kind of guy.  Marino would be great.  So would Adam Larsen.

I was watching his specifically because f the hype he was getting here.  He wasn't overly enticing, to be honest and I probably value defensive dmen as much, or more, than anyone on this board.
