(Proposal) Acquiring Jake Middleton (SJ) and Trent Fredric

Odd.

Recommended Posts

Middleton is a 25 year old LHD who can skate really well, plays a sound defensive game, and  is making himself one of the better tough guys in the league. He would round out our LHD position nicely.

Trent is left handed centerman, however, he’s a solid defensive player that can win faceoffs and play an in your face style of play. 23 years old, he’s like a Lapierre.

To San Jose: Pearson, Brisebois  2022 5th round pick

To Van: Middleton, 2022 6th round pick, 2023 6th round pick or 7th round pick

To Boston: 2023 3rd round pick, Motte, McDonaugh

To Van: Frederic, Debrusk

Debrusk/Miller/Boeser

Podz/Petey/Garland

Frederic/Horvat/Hoglander

Dickinson/Lammikko/Chiasson

Miller line run n gun

Petey line the skill line

Horvat line shutdown line

4th line crash and bang

OEL/Myers

Hughes/Schenn

Middleton/Burroughs

Hamonic

these seem like under payments by us but I like the proposals for sure, I like Trent from Boston, o do not know Middleton but sounds good

Middleton is still an unknown commodity. We’d be giving up a pick and a top 9 player that could help the Sharks out.

For Boston, Frederic has 5 points and barely had points last season. He doesn’t really have that much trade value, and we could use that to our advantage.

Debrusk wants out of Boston, my thinking is give them a player like Motte that will help them in many different ways, a prospect, and  a 3rd to sweeten the deal. Debrusk also has low trade value that we can also use to our advantage.

We’d also save some money cap wise too, and we address 2 of our needs while doing so.

The Sharks are in a re-tool to get younger.   They can't move most of their veteran contracts so they are looking to add youth around them.  Don't see them in the slightest interested in Pearson.

DeBrusk asked for a trade but Boston isn't looking to just give him away.  Haula hasn't quite worked out so he's more likely on the block than Frederic who looks to have been playing C3 the past few games.  Can't see Boston giving up 2 players picked in the 1st round for that package.

I'd do Pearson, Brisebois and our 2022 3rd (Winnipeg) for Kane (50% retained) and Middleton.

San Jose is desperate to dump Kane.  With daddy Bruce I think he can keep him in line.  This way we save our 2022 1st for a big ticket item, a RHD or a stud 3C and some help on the 4th line.

Podkolzin    Pettersson    Garland

Kane           Miller             Boeser

Dickinson    Horvat          Höglander

Motte          Lammikko     Chiasson

Hughes        Hamonic

OEL             Myers

Middleton    Poolman

Burroughs   Schenn

Don't see why SJS does it though.  They are much better off just buying him out.  The cap hit is lower for next season.  They won't be stuck with Pearson and get to keep Middleton.

Trade the best bottom 6 player on the roster? This is the type of player that BB wants, and needs for the others in the lineup to follow.

Kane’s buyout is worse than Pearson’s contract:

$3,666,667

$2,666,667

$4,666,667

$1,666,667

$1,666,667

$1,666,667

Pearson is at $3,250,000 for 2 more years. JR can throw in DiPietro to close the deal.

Kane at 50% retained is already 3.5M + Pearson at 3.25M is more than the buyout.

Except you’re asking them to take Pearson’s contract AND retain $3.5m/year on Kane.  Factor the retention in and it’s cheaper to buy him out. Hell. Cap wise it’s better for them just keep him buried in the minors than to take that deal

True. But only for the first two years. They get a serviceable player who can play in the top 9 and a pick and some prospects. Rather than having Kane on the books for an additional 4 years.

They already have Martin Jones as dead cap for 5 more years. As well as having some brutal contracts on the books in Karlsson and Vlasic.  Vlasic is now a 3rd pairing D making $7 million for the next 4 years.

Cheaper only for the first two years. After that they have dead cap for an additional 4 years.

They can certainly just buy him out and have dead cap for 6 more years. Or they can get a serviceable player who can actually help them.

Nobody is taking Kane without returning salary back to San Jose. The teams with cap space don’t need him as they are all rebuilding.

3 years.  It’s funny how you look at Kane’s contract as 4 years and Pearson’s as 2 when in reality Kane’s is up in 4 years and Pearson’s is up in 3.

You’re essentially asking San Jose to pay Pearson $6.75m for 3 seasons and then another season of dead cap of $3.5m.

the buyout is substantially less damaging to them. Even with the extra 2 years of $1.7m dead cap

If they buy him out at the end of this year they will have dead cap for 6 years.  If they take on Pearson's contract then they will have an additional 2 years after this one.  So they will have dead cap for 4 more years after Pearson's contract is up.

$3,666,667 + $3,250,000 = $6,916,667

$2,666,667 + $3,250000 = $5,916,667

$4,666,667

$1,666,667

$1,666,667

$1,666,667

They would take a hit in the first two years but have nothing after that.  They already have dead cap space with Martin Jones for 5 more years after this one and Vlasic's $7 million is basically the equivalent of dead cap for 4 more years after this one.  Karlsson is anchor contract that they need to deal with.

They may very well just buy Kane out at the end of the year and have his dead cap for 6 years.

You’re mixing the numbers together.  If they buy him out then They won’t have Pearson’s  cap hit on top of that. The only circumstance where they have both cap hits is if they trade Kane at your proposed 50% retention and take back Pearson.

in which case it’s $6.75m for this year and 2 additional years , plus an extra year of $3.5m rents toon at the end.

So they can

-keep him in the minors for the full 4 seasons at $5.85m cap hit

-buy him out for a lower cap hit but have an extra 2 seasons at $1.7m

-do the proposed trade and have a cap hit for Pearson equal to $6.75m for this season plus 2 more plus an extra year at $3.5m

Personally  I think the trade route where they retain AND take back a bad contract is the least appealing option

Wouldn't give up McDonough in any trade right now. He might very well be our best prospect.

Hes #3 for goals scored in the NCAA, even above Matt Beniers. 13 goals in 18 games.

Good chance he becomes a top-6 forward for us in the near future

Nice to see someone else paying attention to late blooming gems like Middleton.

Good ideas. This would solve our LHD depth issue and make us more resilient up front.
