In the last 27 games ( ~1/3 of a season) the Canucks are playing at a 109 point pace; good for 9th in the league over that time. The only teams that have a better record in that time are: COL, PIT, TBL, MIN, FLO, TOR, STL, CAR. Offense is still an issue but they are the best defensive team in the league in that period, by a considerable margin. Even the most cynical fan would have to agree that that is a fairly impressive turnaround, especially if you consider some of the circumstances they have had to deal with over that time ( road heavy, some difficult competition, multiple players out of the lineup for multiple games).

While it is commendable, we're not 'the best defensive team in the league'. We happen to have a stellar goalie and a half decent/middling D in front of him.

They have allowed the least goals per game since Nov. 29 ; regardless of why, that is the case. Demko is a big part of that but the trend continued, largely, with other goalies in net. Forwards also have an impact there.

Nice to have some sense of reason on this site.   To me Demko is what Gibson has already done for a few years in ANA.  Or what Schnieder did in NJ.   Not so sure he's Luongo good.   Guess we will find out soon enough.   He's still a good goalie though.

His points are good at 19 in 18 games but the most encouraging part he's got his plus/minus to +1. Actually getting back to break-up plays.  See how he does in training camp or sooner if we're out of it but we wont be so :).

Thanks Muttley. Welcome aboard!

Well 'why' is Demko. Trying to frame that as 'best defensively' isn't intellectually honest and is an attempt at grabbing a narrative that doesn't actually exist (ie: perhaps my largest pet peeve on this site).

Let me get this straight. Going by the GA/game numbers is intellectually dishonest but just handing all credit to the goalie is perfectly objective? The other goalies had a combined .920 SV% in that time as well. Attempting to grab a narrative? WTF does that even mean? I'm literally quoting stats from the NHL website. I'm not saying they have the best defensemen in the league; I'm saying they have allowed the least goals per game - which is not an opinion. By your logic we could attribute all blame for the PK on Demko, no? Or does he only get the credit/blame for goals allowed at even strength?

And no team has had their goalies outperform their environment more often than the Canucks according to tracking technology.

Spencer Martin even faced the 2nd highest expected goals against this season vs Edmonton.  The defence was so porous where they allowed 28 shots from the slot (which was the most faced by any goalie in any game at that point in the season).  McDavid also had 16 zone entries with possession - most of any player in any game at that point too.

What’s even more impressive to me is that in the 24 games since Bruce Boudreau has been the coach there has been only 6 regulation losses. To FLA, TBL, CAR, STL, NSH and NYI. The currently 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, 14th and 25th teams in the league. There’s only one of those games Canucks should have won.

Yep and those first three games were after that ridiculous layoff where the team, and more importantly Demko, were really rusty.

The Isles game was a result of that first period disaster where Halak let everything in. Yet they still managed to make it interesting.

So yea there hasn’t been many games they’ve outright dropped under Boudreau without some extra challenging circumstances.

Not suggesting goaltending isn't a big part of it. They have allowed the least goals per game in that span of any team (regardless of goalie); that is the fact I was pointing out. If they were last and had poor goaltending, would anyone be using it as an excuse ? It is what it is.
