He was a 1 hit wonder and wasnt great in the playoffs.  Too much against the cap for a cap strapped team even with 50% retention.  There should be capable backup goalies with NHL experience in free agency that we dont have to spend much on.

Cory Schneider?

Sentimental value.

Actually is a few decent goalies available this off season.

Interest from: Ottawa, Buffalo, Vegas, Pit, LA, Van? Would be a bit of an expensive backup. But at least if he gets near him former form we could give Demko 50-55 games knowing we have a capable G in Driedger.

Or was Driedger just a benefit from a strong Florida team? See how he does after this lengthly layoff

LOL well Canucks history.

We have done smart moves, just waiting for one or two more.Pat Quinn was not afraid to make the big move.

I'm trying to think of the top of my head who has been a good waiver pickup for us recently. I'm finding myself stumped. Maybe had a bit too much to smoke tonight. I don't know. Reid Boucher? Haha

And what do you think we are going to spend our cap on next year?  We are gonna take as much expiring bad money for picks as we can.  Driedger is a real good start.

Do we even have cap next year, lol.  Are they shelving Pearson and who knows whats going to happen with Poolman.  We need to shed cap by giving away what little assets we have as no one wants our loser players.

Didn't he out play Bobrovsky in Florida? Seems like a team might want to take a chance at him?

2 million tops for a backup. he's on waivers ... I dont think were getting any picks for taking him on

For sure.  The Nucks have $6.783 in cap space, so that is more than enough to sign whatever college players.

They also have enough to add retention in a trade (Boeser or Garland) at TDL.

Depends how close the signing is to the end of the season.  Rafferty was a college signing by the Canucks with 4 days left to the season (so he could burn his ELC) and had a 5.1M cap hit.

Does this calculation mean college free agents, who wait until August 15, open up a wider number of teams who can afford them? So if we want to sign McDonnough and Livingston before the season ends their total cap hits could be over 10 million, and no way we can get both in?

This only applies for 1-year ELCs and would be relevant for Livingstone, but not McDonough who can only sign a 2-year ELC.  That same year as Rafferty, the Canucks also signed Jake Kielly with 5 days left to the season to a maximum ELC but 2 years - his cap hit was 925K.   It's age dependent where the age is the one on 15 September - at 24 it's 1 year.  22-23 it's a 2 year ELC and 3 years if younger.

1 of the incentives to attract those college UFAs is to agree to burn their ELC immediately.  Teams that have avoided LTIR can have some pretty insane amounts available.  Buffalo last year had well over 1 billion available to sign college players towards the end of the season.

The year the Canucks signed Rafferty they had avoided LTIR and were able to bank ample cap space so his cap hit was a complete non issue.  It's different this year because the Canucks are in LTIR so their cap space won't accrue.

The earlier the signing the lower the cap hit as the signing bonus is spread over a longer period of time.  The same year that they signed Rafferty, the Canucks also signed Josh Teves to the same 1-year max ELC but his cap hit was only 1.5M because he signed much earlier (25 days left vs 4).
