In the summer, we trade for Karlsson, $46 mil for 4 years total.

A two time Norris winner and possible win Norris again this year. top 5 RHD in the league.

Sharks get Canucks 1st round draft of 2024, Myers $6 mil, Poolman $2.5 milx2, Garland $5 milx3 =total $26 mil.

They will have a very good cap room for rebuild.

Canucks will have $13.5 mil room after trade away these 3 players. It is easy to absorb Karlsson's contract.

-- I doubt OEL will want to move due to his NMC.

So basically Karlsson for a 1st and all of the Canucks’s bad contracts…

Yeah good luck with that.

so which contender team has cap room to fit his $11.5 mil?  He would be moved already at TDL 2023

Well you have SJ. taking back $13.5m in cap.  If you assume they’re willing to do thst in a Vancouver deal what’s stopping them from doing the same for another team and getting a better return?

if you’re going to structure a potential deal like that you have to admit that a contender would happily do the same thing but give a much better return in order to take a couple runs at the cup

The asking price around the deadline was the equivalent of 3 first-round picks.  I don't think the OP would be willing to give up 3 first rounders for Karlsson.  But a contender might be willing to do 2 firsts plus other stuff.

Even if the Sharks agreed to this, we wouldn't be able to afford to ice a competitive roster in 2024-25.

Likely lowest new contract for Pettersson is $11m and Hronek is $7m.

So that would give us this roster of 13 players signed and only $10.6m in cap space to sign another 10 players for the 2024-25 season:

Only way this works would be if we buy out OEL and the cap goes up a lot.    EK is having a resurgence.   Can say, when the guys on, and he's on right now, he's one of the best if not the best player in the planet.   If Cooke didn't sever his achilles tendon, i'd bet he'd have another 2-3 Norris trophies.   He's that good when on.    There was a time,  not too long ago, that EK was being discussed as just as impactful to his team, as Crosby and Ovi are to theirs.   As in a generational talent.   Now on a bad team, he's showing he's still got game.   And also showing QHs and Makar what sort of bar they need to achieve to also get the same mantle.

You just know if Karlsson got traded his numbers would drop again and he'd go back to being terrible.

If he's healthy, he's not going to disappoint.   Pretty sure he remains a Shark until Grier becomes more realistic with his ask.

trade away Boeser? or if Sharks want him, for sure a first round/top 6 winger LOL

Actually, Brock would be a good  pickup for the Sharks, as their right side was decimated by the Meier trade.

He would immediately fill the 1st RW role and they are only commited for the 2yrs.  Gives younger players

time to develop and can be moved at the 2nd TDL for pic or prospect.

Brock for Sturm 3C (2m x 2) + NJ 1st

My calculations included a cap limit increase to $87.5m in 2024-25.

Buying out OEL and replacing him in 2024-25 with a league min contract, then we actually save about $4m extra. That gives us about $14.6m to sign 10 players. Still don't think that's enough space to ice a competitive roster. Also need to consider it will get worse in 2025-26 when the OEL cap penalty increases to $4.5m - 4.8m from his buy out (depending on when the buyout occurs).

Under certain circumstances an OEL buyout is a legit move. IMO Karlsson is not a good move.

Yeah he's reminding me of Coffey in 94-95.

If EK can somehow keep it up, on a SJ team that really doesn't have much at all right now ... he could be the first D to break 1000 points in a very long time.   That's an incredible feat really.    Burns would have to play until he's 40-41 at his current pace to manage the same.   Five years younger ... and catching up lol.    Just goes to show how rare these guys really are.    Highly doubt either Makar or QHs will end up top 10-11 in scoring, 4 times.    Potvin, Coffey and Orr - Karlsson ... that's some pretty good company.   Could be the first D since Lidstrom to win a Norris as a minus player.
