POPULAR

With all the attention on Kesler and Booth's returns, Raymond's improved play, Schroeder's unveiling, and Malhotra's banishment, it seems nobody is talking about how well Chris Higgins is playing.

Higgins is tied for 16th in takeaways among forwards, with 15. However, he gets far less icetime than most of the others in this category. If you break down the number of minutes played per takeaway, and compare with other players known for their defensive abilities, this is how it looks:

Minutes Played Per Takeaway
Toews - 15.4
E.Staal - 17.6
Hossa - 17.3
Higgins - 18.6
Duchesne - 20.2
Datsyuk - 20.2
Malkin - 21.8
Elias - 23.8

Among the top-30 forwards in takeaways, Higgins' 31 hits are the highest of the bunch. Also, his 4 giveaways are 2nd lowest in this group - only Frolik has (one) less.

All of this while playing with a revolving door of linemates.

I wasn't fond at all about how he was playing the first couple of games, glad to see he's starting to pick it up.

Most GWG in our SCF run, need him to get hot at the right time when we need secondary scoring the most.

Yep, like I've said many times, he was our most consistent player last season, I'd put him on the 2nd ahead of Booth, he seems to play well anywhere.

I always knew Higgins was good at takeaways, but I didn't realize he was among the leagues best.

One of the better 3rd liners in the league.
He rarely makes mistakes, and even when he isn't producing points-wise, he is still getting things done on the ice.

I wouldn't say under rated but I would say that Higgs is finally coming into his own and knowing the game. I like his play.

Higgins is probably the Canuck I am least worried about. He is extremely solid defensively, underrated offensively and plays his physical when he has to. Plus, he always turns it up in the playoffs.

He needs to stay as our 3rd line left winger, no matter what happens with the 2nd and 4th lines. He is such a well-rounded player and really does give it 'his all'. Some way, MG will get the 2nd line RW player the team needs and then Higgs can be on the 3rd line with Schroeder and Hansen/Kass.

Always nice to see a thread that (a) promotes a player (b ) doesn't use the promotion of player 'A' to chastise player 'B', and © uses stats to back up their argument.

OMG we could've had McKeown!

I think Virtanen was a terrible pick given that he's out for 6 months which will hinder his development. You don't pick someone at #6 under that circumstance, along with the fact that he was given a 3/5 IQ (aka he's dumb).

God dammit Benning. WHY VIRTANEN? Terrible move.

Down by the River - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Yeah. A very very very good 3rd liner who can move into the 2nd when needed, I would still prefer he and Hansen in 3rd line roles myself, that's where they really shine.

One of my favourite players on the team. Always trying hard, great defensively and is good in the offensive zone also. I liked him before the Nucks picked him up and was ecstatic when we traded for him.

Definitely under rated. Interesting stat ... would have never guessed. Thank god we have one under rated guy but doesn't balance out all the over rated ones on defense lol

The NHL is a fixed old boys club. I've come to acceptance with that and just watch for entertainment. The 2011 & 2012 Canucks are champs in my books. Go Canucks Go!

I love Higgins and Lapierre, I think the day we aquired both of them is a day to remember in canucks history.

Higgins is ok, but i think we have alot of players just like him who do just enough, to stay in coaches good grace, but lack any real impact on a nightly basis.

He is what he is.

Higgs is awesome in his role. Unfortunately he is a UFA at the end of this year, and we're currently cash strapped with 55m tied up in 13 players for a 64.3m cap hit. It really creates the debate as to who we can keep in the ~2mil range between Higgins and Raymond, while we still have to sign Lapierre and Tanev. In my opinion, we keep Higgins, and Gillis pulls a money ball move and deals Raymond at the deadline for a banger. This way we don't lose Raymond for nothing, as he will most certainly see a bigger paycheck on the open market than here, where his salary was cut.

He's the best forechecker on this team and one of the best in the league. If we had more players play the gritty, tough but skilled game of Higgins the Cup would be ours. You win in the playoffs with guys like this. Big hitters who have amazing hands and a great shot.

Hopefully Hansen, Booth and Kassian can learn from Higgins and play as good as he does because if we have 4 Higginses this team will win a Cup for sure.

It's not til recently that he's played the way he normally does though but until he strings it on a bit further he's not nearly as good as he was last year

Yep, Higgins is great. And you are right, he is underrrated by a lot of Canucks fans because he isn't flashy. He's the kind of player you never have to worry about because of his tremendous work ethic. Even if Higgy's not scoring, he is extremely effective.

He's extremely strong along the boards, and combined with his work ethic, always giving full effort, he is a tenacious forechecker and excellent at puck retrieval. He has pretty decent hands too.

Oh, and DAT BEARD, and DEM ABS. :bigblush:

He's been playing pretty good lately, but lets not get our expectations up. Higgy has like 8 playoff points with us.. in 30 games...

he has been as solid as solid comes so far this year. his offensive production may not be amazing, but there's no denying the effort he puts out there each and every shift. the dude works his butt off and is a pleasure to watch because of it.

I couldn't agree with you more OP. I love Higgins! I was so happy he got a goal last game and I hope that one goal will make it so other fans will watch his play more carefully. He may not be the most offensive as in scoring goals player but he is one of the most consistent.
