[Signing] ROR re-signs with the Avalanche, Avoids Arbitration

Recommended Posts

Great deal for O'Reilly.... He gets a nice short deal that just happens to make him a UFA at 2 years from now so that he can walk. I would trade this guy if im Colorado. He is a great player but clearly doesnt want to be there, and if they trade him now they could get back a lot for him, as opposed to losing him for nothing in 2 yrs.

Adrian Dater@adater

Joe Sakic tells me this is no sign-and-trade thing with ROR. "We want him long term, and we'll keep working on that"

It's almost expected, and it gives them an extra year over what they would have been awarded with the arbitration ruling to try and get him signed longer term. They will have to wait until next summer now to re-sign him on his next deal, so if he has a very good year they could be in trouble.

Well at least they didn't get to arbitration and he signed for less than his qualifying offer. Hopefully Mack has a ridiculous year so his extension next year can reset the structure at a much higher value. That's the only hope he stays long term. If one can't get done next summer he has to be traded. Of course if someone is willing to offer a top 4 LHD and a replacement top 6 LW right now then Sakic needs to move him immediately.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but imo this kid is overrated. Not saying he's terrible, but for the reported money he's signed for, he should be a borderline point per game guaranteed player. If 6.2 is correct, that's more than Matt Duchene, and he definitely doesnt bring more to the table than him imo.

He doesn't bring more but is about the same. Their numbers are pretty similar. I don 't know if either are PK specialist but offensively they are pretty close in numbers.

Only similar stat is gm's played. MD is 0.78 ppg career while ROR is 0.55. MD is 0.75 playoff ppg while ROR is 0.53. I'll admit, stats aren't everything, but don't try to make a case for ROR getting paid more than MD based on offensive production because that simply is false.

Their numbers aren't similar. The only case for them being close is their average over the last 3 years where Duchene is at 0.8 ppg and ROR at 0.73 ppg but that includes Dutchy's injury plagued down year. He has been hovering just under a ppg the last two seasons. Short of another offensive jump next year, ROR looks like he'll be a consistent high 50 to mid 60 point player. ROR is a hell of a defensive player but Dutchy is still pretty clearly the best Av (not named Varly) and the only player with a realistic chance of taking that title away is Mack.

I said last year. All time Duchene is better. But O'Reilly is trending upwards right now. And his contract is only two years no need to blow his $ numbers out of proportion. If he proves to be less then stellar his next contract will reflect that.

Duchene is aswell. Duchene will be hitting his prime in the next couple of years.

Duchene is on the verge of being considered elite IMO, he's just about PPG and I can see him hitting 80+ points next season.

You didn't clarify any specific year, so don't try to backtrack. Even if you had said last year, which you didn't, you would still be incorrect, as MDs numbers were better.

Face it, based on offensive output, no way ROR should be making more than MD.

And your argument that ROR is trending upwards may be correct; however if you ask most people, I suspect they would say MD is trending quicker and probably peaks out higher as well.
