According to Sean Avery, the Rangers org pays for a lot of things other teams dont, so in fact they actually save money. Plus players love playing in that market

I thought that's the reason they don't want to play for Canadian teams Because in Canada, Hockey reigns supreme. In NY, they are overshadowed immensely by Basketball, Baseball and Football. If anyone sees them on the street, they are unlikely to be noticed. Even if they are, they are 4th on the NY sports royalty list. Vancouver is a one sport town, even visiting NHL players will get noticed downtown. In NY, highly doubt it. Read Avery's article.

So they want to feel like being sport stars w/o having the exposure and pressure of being a sports star? Strange how come NBA and MLB players have no problem playing in big markets when the spotlight is focused on them?

You will find Canadian athletes are much more humble than their american counterparts. Either way, if you read Avery's article, you will understand that playing in a big city like NY has its advantages.
