Discussion- No NHL in 2018 olympics

Recommended Posts

This isn't going to end well for the league, especially if Ovi goes anyway.  Utterly short-sighted decision that doesn't even make business sense given that the NHL seems to want to grow the game in Asia.

Hopefully they play to empty arenas during the Olympics and all the top players go anyway.

Fans should boycott attending any games during the olympics. Make the owners pay for their selfish decision.

There is a chance of course that this is some kind of poker play by Bettman. We'll see if the IOC falls for his bluff or not, if it is a bluff.

If its not a bluff, then it raises a whole slew of questions around who is eligible to play. Where will they draw the team from? For that matter who will be the management/coaching team that builds the team? Will this management team allow anyone and everyone whether NHL rebel, AHL, or beer leagues to try out? Or does it revert back to so-called amateurs only, whatever that means (and would Russia go along). Will Crosby, Toews, Burns and others follow Ovie's lead and go anyways too?  (even if their teams are on the playoff bubble line and their owners are not as keen as Washingtons?). Many more questions to come.

But that said. As long as they sorted this out in time for the Olympics after that, I wouldn't mind watching an Olympics cheering on a rag tag underdog Canadian team beating all the odds and winning anyways. :towel:

This really sucks. Hoping the players go anyway.

Fans have literally no leverage over Bettman either. What are we going to do...Stop watching hockey? We LOVE hockey. Not buy jerseys of our favorite players?? I LOVE my favorite players. I feel so helpless.

The players do have leverage though. Is the NHL really going to suspend ALL of its star players... The same players that fill the seats and sell the jerseys..

the players want this...The fans want this.... But no one wants to pay for this to happen. Maybe we should kickstart or GoFundMe. Where are the wealthy old goblins who love hockey and balling out????!? someone pay someone!!!!???Zuckerberg??!! Why does everything always have to be about money for these greedy golddiggers. can't we just see some best on best hockey ffs.

World Cup was fun to watch but poo in comparison to Olympics. Straight poo. Still hockey though will have to continue to watch. Just poo though.

God bless Ovechkin for leading by example. It will be impossible for Crosby to stay and let Ovechkin go to claim Olympic gold. Hopefully the rest will just fall into place.

Buttman continues to tool around with NHLPA. Players will want to play for their country still no matter what as they want to make their country proud

This guys past due to go.  Since the length of their last agreement was longer than usual he just had to find something else to squash for the fans.  Their propaganda on NHL.com included a supposed survey saying 72 percent of Americans and 53 percent of Canadians polled were against NHL players participating.  Hogwash complete utter B.S.  I don't know anyone who doesn't want to see the best team Canada we can ice.  Who the heck was he polling anyways?  Not hockey fans that is for sure.  The players themselves want to go and I hope LOADS of them leave creating  havoc in their sacred schedule both in th AHL and the NHL.

Next up will be the suspensions they will levy on the players or fines or whatever for going to create a detterrent which is going to backfire.

I was overjoyed when they first announced Nagano and the subsequent Olympics and included some of the best hockey moments the last two decades. From 2002 Salt Lake winning our first gold medal in like a century playing a great American team and Sakic doing his best Beliveau impression.  The Torino Olympics iced the greatest collection of Swedes this world has ever seen ( check the roster out it was just sick with talent) to Vancouver a repeat of 2002 this time showcasing Crosby's arrival with The Goal to the most defensively dominant performance ever in 2014... Three golds in five games.

All of these games were the most memorable hockey Canadas enjoyed aside from EDM CAL and VAN tragic game seven losses and Ottawas quick exit in that time period.

The hockey s better than anything the NHL has to offer and maybe that's the kicker. They list a pile of lame excuses including their original money issues which was quickly available by the  IIHF...

I

Hate

Bettman.

Time for him to go.  The IOC responded if the NHL didn't come to these games they weren't allowed in for next ones.  Ugh.  Ugh.ugh.

for those that care, we should boycott NHL during the olympics. Everyone is watching olympics anyway, and I won't bother to watch a mean nothing nhl game in Feb.

I think they screw up, and chances of them going back for Beijing is not good.

guess we will not see McDavid representing Canada anytime soon. What a shame.

Wadr, the NHL stages a dog and pony "world cup of hockey" that none of us gave a literal crap about - and never will btw - and then have the audacity to dictate that players will not play for their Nations in the Olympics.

Delusions of grandeur once again confirmed.

Apparently the NHL believes that appointing Bettman their Commissioner makes him the Emperor of Hockey.

Don't listen to your customers.  Great business model.

sochi wasn't finalized until July 2013.  So maybe it is a ploy vs IOC.  Who knows. We can only hope.

This is great news for Jayson Megnas chances of making Team Canada since he won't be in the NHL next year...

Being American ruins his chance of making Team Canada though. :P

there's certainly that potential angle here.

a negotiating position relative to IOC - and the NHLPA, regarding insurance, revenues.

Still though, the optics relative to hockey fans is awful - not that they care.

I don't blame them for playing hardball relative to money monsters like the IOC, but this isn't simply about that.

This means that they wont participate to Peking 2022 either. IOC had condition that theyll have to participate in 2018 olympics also to get there.

No worries.  We'll play some preseason games in China though, lol.

That is a bluff.  Everyone wants China (at least the NHL and IOC do).  China is a market for literally everything.  South Korea isn't.  If NHL be like, "We wanna send players to China" (which they clearly want to, given the LA-VAN exhibition), the IOC isn't gonna stop them.

And who still calls it Peking?  21st century, man.

yeah, left over usage from the 19th century. But for some reasons, Peking duck is still in use. Myanmar v Burma, Taiwan v Formosa, etc.
