The league should give him an ultimatum, if he wants to come back to into the league it's either New Jersey, Las Vegas, or nada.

Part of me agrees with this as well, he should be forced to play at least 1 year with one of these teams first, for running in the past, show your committed again.

FYI to everyone wondering about his previous contract and cap hit - that contract is done.

1. All thirty-one teams would grant permission to return to the NHL.  He would be a free agent.

2. Kovalchuk sits out a year and not play hockey anywhere.  After then, only the Devils need to grant his permission to return to the NHL and he would be a free agent.

3. Kovalchuk would wait until he's 35 (one more season).  At that point, he's free to come back without any permission.  That would be the 2018-19 season.

Oh wow, SKA St. Petersberg is going to get wrecked this year. Their top two lines are basically leaving and Shestyorkin might come over too.

Kovalchuk will probably have a similar season to Radulov if he comes over.

Idk man Kovi is on a whole nother level than Radulov, on the right team Kovy is a 70 point guy

Wonder how he'll do... Hope he's as entertaining to watch as he used to be.

How about NJD re-signs him, 2 years 6AAV

Then we trade him for Loui? One can dream... Sigh lol

Why would you want scum like Kovalchuk on our team?

Following up on @FriedgeHNIC reporting of Ilya Kovalchuk's potential return to NHL, getting some questions about his status. Here you go:

1. Kovalchuk remains property of NJD as he is on the Voluntary Retirement List (VRL) so he is free to sign with them for coming season.

2. If Kovalchuk doesn't want to return to NJ, he could sign with ANY team as long as EVERY other team in NHL signs off on it. Not a chance.

3a. Because Kovalchuk is on VRL, NJ can't trade his rights to any team unless Kovalchuk signs with NJ first. So sign and trade possible.

3b. Note: Only way Kovalchuk can come off VRL is by signing with NJ. Player on VRL can't have rights traded. Thus, sign and trade is req'd.

4. As I understand it, these rules/scenarios are applicable if Kovalchuk wants to return to the NHL for the coming 2017-18 season.

NO way

Kovalcash isn't done screwing over the Devils

He will make them trade down to 21st ensure they get the best possible russian prospect they can and make the devils draft Klim Kostin before deciding the NHL isn't the right fit

:bigblush:
