Part of me agrees with this as well, he should be forced to play at least 1 year with one of these teams first, for running in the past, show your committed again. HI5
Rumor has it that Kovalchuk-Radulov are looking to team up with Matthews-Marner to play for Canada Maple Leafs.
Misconduct16
FYI to everyone wondering about his previous contract and cap hit - that contract is done. 1. All thirty-one teams would grant permission to return to the NHL. He would be a free agent. 2. Kovalchuk sits out a year and not play hockey anywhere. After then, only the Devils need to grant his permission to return to the NHL and he would be a free agent. 3. Kovalchuk would wait until he's 35 (one more season). At that point, he's free to come back without any permission. That would be the 2018-19 season.

Bruce Boudreau
MacLean speculated Kovalchuk joining Radulov since Montreal is desperate for scorers at forward. Could see it happening especially because they were in the KHL together and now each other quite well.

Their top two lines are basically leaving and Shestyorkin might come over too. Kovalchuk will probably have a similar season to Radulov if he comes over. Idk man Kovi is on a whole nother level than Radulov, on the right team Kovy is a 70 point guy
prix57
No thanks to Kovalchuk. Don't care how talented he is, he is no fit for our team. Plus lost a ton of respect for him since this:
apollo
Wonder how he'll do... Hope he's as entertaining to watch as he used to be. How about NJD re-signs him, 2 years 6AAV Then we trade him for Loui? One can dream... Sigh lol

Mackcanuck
Bob McKenzieVerified account @TSNBobMcKenzie 3m3 minutes ago Following up on @FriedgeHNIC reporting of Ilya Kovalchuk's potential return to NHL, getting some questions about his status. Here you go: Bob McKenzieVerified account @TSNBobMcKenzie 3m3 minutes ago 1. Kovalchuk remains property of NJD as he is on the Voluntary Retirement List (VRL) so he is free to sign with them for coming season. Bob McKenzieVerified account @TSNBobMcKenzie 3m3 minutes ago 2. If Kovalchuk doesn't want to return to NJ, he could sign with ANY team as long as EVERY other team in NHL signs off on it. Not a chance. Bob McKenzieVerified account @TSNBobMcKenzie 3m3 minutes ago 3a. Because Kovalchuk is on VRL, NJ can't trade his rights to any team unless Kovalchuk signs with NJ first. So sign and trade possible. 3b. Note: Only way Kovalchuk can come off VRL is by signing with NJ. Player on VRL can't have rights traded. Thus, sign and trade is req'd. Bob McKenzieVerified account @TSNBobMcKenzie 11m11 minutes ago 4. As I understand it, these rules/scenarios are applicable if Kovalchuk wants to return to the NHL for the coming 2017-18 season. -Vintage Canuck-
According to Russian reporter Slava Malamud, Ilya Kovalchuk would prefer to either stay in the New York City area or play in Florida next season, depending on what his wife and kids want to do. A sign-and-trade is looking like the most likely scenario.
