MY DRAFT RANKINGS #3-#10

Recommended Posts

I haven't been on this forum since last years draft when I told you that the Canucks should trade down and select Chychrun.   It's draft time again, so here is my scouting report on these players and the order of which I believe they should be ranked on Jim's board.

3  Mittelstadt - The most elite center available.  Has excellent speed adjustments and agility, ability to spin of a check, crazy good hands, great passer, excellent shot.  The full package.  Faults: Some figure he might be best suited for the wing but I have no Idea where this comes from. Not great competition and was tough to scout. The real knock is; he's going to university next season.

4 Makar - The most prolific D-Man in the draft.  Reminds me of Duncan Keith except Makar loves to shoot the puck.  Has slick hands, one of the best skaters in the draft, he has PP QB written all over him. Faults:  He's going to University next season. He was tough to scout as competition was sub-par.

5 Tippett - NO he's not a Center, NO he's not a D-Man, YES he is a winger.... He doesn't fit what the Canucks are looking for but this guy is a real hockey player. His speed is WOW.  His slap shot is insane.  He will be a no.1 winger on whatever team drafts him.  If you want a difference maker, he would be the guy.

6 Glass - Loves to score goals. Has a nose for the net. Great 5 on 5 player. Has a terrific shot.  Faults - Very thin in stature, looks clumsy when getting bumped or rubbed, needs leg strength, doesn't show great hands but makes up for it with his heart.

7 Vilardi - Big Big Man. Listed at 6.2 but hes a tank. Has second line center written all over him.  Could play this up coming season.  Hard to play against, dependable 2-way guy.  Has a really good release on his wrist shot. A very safe pick and will be an NHL player and will help your hockey team. He's a winner.  Could be a perfect fit for Dallas. Faults:  Doesn't possess top end speed.  His hands are good, not great. Won't be a no.1 line kind of guy.

8 Heiskanen - Haven't seen him play too much but what I have seen shows me he has a very good shot from the point.  Not as skilled or as slick on his feet as Makar but could be a top pairing D-man one day. Safe pick. Not a sexy pick.

9 Liljegren - Can be a good player on the top of the blue line on an NHL PP.  Can shoot the puck, and finds the net.  Not great vision, might have difficulties in his own end defending NHL speed.  I'm just not a fan and don't believe he will go in the top 5.

Necas - Great speed.... I mean this guy can absolutely fly.   Loves to set players up.  Great vision.   Faults:  Doesn't shoot enough... even though his shot isn't too shabby.  Needs to gain some muscle.... and I mean like 20 plus LBS of muscle.

For the Canucks:  Mittelstadt or Makar would be my choice.... At #5, they might just end up being the best players in this draft class. Sure they won't be in a Canuck uni next year but that's fine.  Rebuilds take time.  These 2 will be elite players one day.... top end talents.  Wouldn't it be something if Jim could somehow land both of them? It would take a lot to get the 3 or 4 pick from Dallas or Colorado but you never know.

I agree with Mittlestadt is the way to go. Seems to be exactly what the Canucks need. Elite speed, skill and vision to distribute pucks to our goal scoring wingers.

Makar I am hesitant on. Seems to be so good on the PP but how is he defensively?? He is a small D-Man listed at 5-10.. could be another Jordan Subban 2.0?

Just one question,  how many times have you seen any of these prospects play live either in their own domestic leagues or internationally?

I've seen 6 of them live. All on TV and on tape. Heiskanen is the one I haven't seen live. Makar only once but Makar was a player that you watched every time he was on the ice.  Put it this way, if you've never seen a hockey game in your life before, you would've left the game saying, I want to see Makar play again.

Believe he was specifically speaking live in terms of in person at the rink.  Not criticizing you,  but probably wanted to know where your information on each guy came from.

Well....that's still better than people who only look at stats and Youtube highlights.

Middlestad, Glass, Tippet at five. Foote, Liljegren or Makar if JB can flip Tanev for a pick.

Makar is too risky for this team to take IMO. Could be the next great d man, could be the next Ryan Ellis. He is worth drafting, just not top 5. If JB could ad a pick and land Makar as his d man this draft, great.  But take the center or game breaking winger that Tippet will be.

It is hard to read the rankings this year. Foote at 6'3 RHD around 210 plays a solid defensive game and managed to put up 57 points. How is he not ranked higher.

You know now that he will make the NHL and if he is half the d man that his dad was while putting up points then he should be a lock for the top ten of this draft.

Knowing that Patrick and Hischier will be gone by 5:

1. Vilardi

2. Mittlestadt

3. Glass

------------- <- if we pick anyone past this I won't be thrilled but I'll understand

4. Makar

5. Heiskanen

6. Valimaki

7. Liljegren

------------- <- if we pick anyone past this I will be confused and unhappy

8. Necas

9. Pettersson

10. Vesalainen

------------- <- if we pick anyone past this I will be pissed

No Rasmussen.  No Tippett. Nobody else please.

Oh please no Tippett, his skating is worst than Vilardi and he's so soft for his size. Not a bad player but comparatively he's a step down from Vilardi and we need a center more so than a winger (bpa but still...). Vilardi is most likely gone at 3 however.

Have you watched Ellis in the playoffs? I would gladly take that...

Other than obvious future franchise players (who only pop up about every 5 years if you're lucky) trying to predict how the top draft picks will perform is a crap shoot. The year the Sedins went 2 and 3 Patrik Stephan went #1, his career best was 40 points. #4 was Pavel Brendl who barely dipped his toe in the NHL, #5 was Tim Connelly who did have a pretty respectable career mostly with the Sabres. However, in the same draft, Ryan Miller went 138, Zetterberg 210 and Vrbata 212. If you go through other drafts you will invariably come up with similar results. So go figure, putting names out there might be a bit of fun, but at the end of the day, it comes down to your scouting staff (Oh s**t!) with a big hand from lady.luck.

My guess is its going to go:
1. Hischier
2. Patrick
3. Mittelstad

4.Vilardi

before it gets to our pick, so my bet is Jim goes D and picks up Heiskanen for a potential top D Fin pairing with Juolevi for the future, and Jim uses his 2 2nd rounders (assuming CBJ chooses this year to give us the pick which they likely will) to hunt for a C, maybe a Euro not on anyone's radar here.

Nail,

Ellis is no Ducan Kieth.  He is a great 3-4 PP specialist.  He plays behind Josi and Subban...  I would love to have a player like Ellis, but not in the top of the draft.  At ten sure.  Makar is being highly touted, but is a risky pick.  Can we afford that risk when we desperately need either a number one d man and a number one center.  A good center will be available when we draft.  I say take Glass of Middlestad with the 5 pick and attempt to trade for at least one more high first and grab Tippet if he is still on the board or one of the d men left, including Makar.  Tanev could get that pick.

PS sorry Edmonton ruined your career, but thanks for following the CDC. ;)
