wshdrvvn
He could be in the rotation in Utica any time, having been drafted out of Europe. I wonder if this means they feel he’ll be ready for that after this season.
Popular Post GoldenAlien
Nice story by Silovs' agent from after the draft: Quote When I signed the Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs last summer, the goal was to get him on the radar of USHL and CHL teams for next season. He wanted to come to North America. I also told him I’d do everything I possibly could do to get him drafted into the NHL. At the time, he wasn’t even considered a potential NHL prospect. He trusted me and we believed together we could achieve these goals. He was coming off winning the U20 WJC D1A tournament and boasting a .96 save %. Yet, he wasn’t highly touted coming into the season and virtually every USHL/CHL/NHL team didn’t take an interest in him. The Latvian U20 WJC team passed over him in December. He had barely played with the MHL club HK Riga, so he really lacked the exposure to Russian NHL scouts for the first half of the season. Despite this, I kept teams posted on his progress, while receiving limited feedback. Silovs played most of the season with HS Riga in the OHL Latvian pro league, which many people in the hockey world even in Europe know very little about. We stayed positive and Arturs kept up the hard work. He played well in the Latvian pro league, so well that Dinamo Riga in the KHL had to start paying attention. He was brought up to practice and put on the roster of the KHL club for the last couple months of the season. You don’t see a 17 year old on a KHL roster too often, let alone a goalie. I think that was the wake up call to scouts to stop sleeping on him. My conversations with scouts and personnel started to gain some traction. After Arturs season ended in March, I still didn’t have a lot of interest from the USHL/CHL, but I felt I had enough to place him into one of those two leagues for next season. NHL interest, while it slowly grew from a few teams as the year went on, certainly wasn’t high. Nobody really would have known about him all season if I wasn’t advocating for him. NHL Central Scouting and most scouting services didn’t give him the time of day. The positive was everyone knew about him because I made sure of it. U18 Worlds came around to Sweden in April, and Arturs faced an onslaught of competition as expected. This tournament was what he trained his whole season for. We knew going in that was his one shot to prove his value given how his season played out. He wasn’t going to disappoint, and I saw the spectacle in person. He showed to all those watching he was a top goalie for his age. I started receiving messages from teams in various leagues such as “sorry for the delayed response” from these same teams who didn't show any earlier interest. We met with a handful of NHL teams at U18 Worlds, and it was such a positive experience for us. Scouts started talking to me more and more, and following that tournament, I knew he was getting picked in the draft. I just wasn't sure what round. I wrote this article up to this point on the flight home from U18s. This past weekend, it all came to fruition, when the Vancouver Canucks selected him 156th overall in the 6th round. I was pumped because they were the first NHL team that took an interest in him during his season. Vancouver reached out the morning of the second day of the draft as well, so I had a good feeling they wouldn't pass on him. There were 5 Latvian NHL prospects for this draft at the beginning of the season. Silovs wasn’t one of them listed at the time. Yet, in the end, he was the only Latvian selected. This is just the beginning for him and obviously a long way to go, but I write this to be a lesson to parents/players when it comes to getting an agent/advisor and about exposure. Those 5 other Latvian prospects all have big agents who represent top NHL players. At a young age, it is easy to get sucked into picking a big agency just given all the high profile players being represented. I remember when I was 17. You see great success and want to be a part of it without thinking. But where do you fit into that success when you may not be a high prospect on the agency's list of players? That is something many don't think about. In the end, it is all about being exposed to scouts and the time/effort that will be put into a player to help them along. An advisor/agent can make a big difference, especially in a draft eligible year for a European player not in a hot market like Sweden/Finland. Politics and connections run the world, and no matter the level, whether its squirts or the NHL, it impacts decisions on players. Vancouver and the rest of the NHL/USHL/CHL teams likely would not have known much of anything until late April about Silovs if I didn’t push him to teams all season even when they didn’t show interest. Do your research and pick the best agency for you. Love that we were the first to have him on the radar! 3

Kootenay Gold
As copied from an article in Canucks Way: Silovs will likely continue to play and develop in Europe, rather than coming over to North America in 2019-20. He did not enter the Canadian Hockey League import draft, therefore technically could join the Utica Comets or Kalamazoo Wings — as he is not bound the CHL/NHL player agreement. Interesting as I thought he was selected by Barrie in the import draft this year as well.

McMichael is a 1st round pick and Stranges is ranked highly for this upcoming draft are the standouts on that roster it seems.

Popular Post GoldenAlien
Silovs had a shootout loss over the weekend, 22 saves on 24 shots, 0.917 SAV%. Early goings, but he's currently ranked 3rd in the OHL for save percentage (0.933) and 4th for GAA (2.27), among goalies who have played 3 or more games. Considering this is his first time playing on North American ice, good start for the 6th rounder. Can see why Benning signed him early.

We drafted him, so no matter what we own his rights for 3 years regardless of if we sign him? Why would we sign a prospect if he isn't likely to make the roster immediately? Couldn't you just let them marinate and save a roster spot? Is it a show of good faith and some cash for the kid? I'm not trying to knock Arturs, or any of the kids that get signed early, just curious about the thought process. Thanks for the updates, it's great how well he is doing.

I have a suspicion that Ian Clarke saw something special in him and pushed JB to sign him. As for him coming to play in Canada; the signing may have been a factor; we will probably never know but it is nice to see him doing well. Disappointed that he didn't play last night but at least his team won.

Maybe it's about giving the kids the funding to only worry about development? Do they get that ELC money right away? Or just after they turn pro? Just curious, certainly not trying to argue or hate on the kid.

I agree that we were not about to lose him and think it was more a combination of Clarke really liking him, wanting him to come over to play in N.A. and providing him with the capital to do that. My understanding is that he would receive the signing bonus of 85k right away even though he is playing in juniors and that would have helped him greatly in making the move across the pond.
