Coach potato strategy.
Boring & not flashy but (imho) it's what should focus on (and no I ain't no financial advisor & certainly not qualified to give such advice )
Haven't looked at the "stats" but I'd gather Petey if facing the opposition better checkers. Miller is a natural winger but used as a center because there was nobody better in the lineup. Bo handles the tougher defensive assignments (likely facing the opposition better offensive forwards). Easier to look better without the puck when you're not worried about the opposition scoring goals against you.
It's often the ones that yell the loudest about that issue (against gay people) that are the ones (in secret) that "play for that team". Self-loathing.
Think that was his problem. Didn't have any real weakness but wasn't really great at anything either. Think Tim Schaller - only over a million cheaper.
Might end up with a longer career than Jake Virtanen.
By Mike Gillis benchmarks, Gillis had a good year (Gaunce & Hutton).
Benning's error wasn't drafting, acquiring, developing a new core after the aging team that Gillis left him. It was surrounding that core with enough decent supplementary players. And of course, the head coach.
Yeah it's amazing that Brian Burke's one weakness was his inability to get us a starting goalie. Cloutier was close but he seemed to always fall apart in the post-season. The single Cup win Burke has on his resume (as a GM).........the previous GM got that legit starting goalie.
Nonis not only acquired Luongo via trade but was also the GM that drafted Schneider.
Canucks have had solid goaltending stretching back to the time Dave Nonis was the GM (when he acquired Luongo). That's the one consistant positive thing (whether the goalie be a drafted prospect or a UFA) going thru multiple GM's now.
You're the one that mentioned Smyl in the same post as Miller though hence my reaction. Smyl gave his all whether the team was up by three goals or down by three goals. Same 100% effort whether team was on a 5 game winning streak or 5 game losing streak. He's a Captain.
Great HHOF player but wouldn't be nearly as effective without all the goons protecting him (eg., he could hack/slash/trick/elbow whoever he wanted & if you tried to retaliate, multiple Flyers [not just Dave Schultz] would be all over your butt). Chicken**** player that hid behind his goons.
Columbus hasn't done much in the past number of years so you have to think their GM is feeling the heat. I seriously doubt you'll see them get rid of proven players for Miller as they'll be no better off (reaching the post-season). Think they'll more likely be willing to deal "futures" (eg., prospects) if they want to acquire Miller.
Yeah trying to change him into a player which isn't him (nor play to his strengths) is a bit of a wishful thinking considering he's 32 years old. He is what he is. A 2nd pairing defenseman.
Boeser’s biggest issue is his qualifying offer to other teams. While he might feel obligated to give the Canucks every chance in regards to signing for less than that in exchange for term, he had ZERO reason to do so with a new team. Possible interested teams know this.
Yotes like bad cap contracts *provided they don't payout actually that much cash*. That's why they took on Loui E (large cap hit but not alot of cash).
Dickinson & Poolman both have back-end loaded contracts. Seriously doubt they'd have ANY interest in either player because of that.
