  1. Can't agree with the first sentence, but you hit it out of the park with your second. Trade sounds good to me. Trade him to the Hawks -they love expiring UFAs (they have 8 on their team so far). They also have 3 (2nd) rounders as well. The Canucks could try for the pick they traded to them, but Hawks would probably want to send the Vegas one instead.
  2. Your constant disrespect for Garland is getting old. Have a look at my post in the Garland thread; maybe you'll learn something. Yeah, yeah...he didn't perform as well as he should; just like some of the other players. He is a determined little ****** so I have no doubt he will return to camp, ready to play and will to do what needs to be done for his team. Beau is the easiest player to be traded, due to his 1yr contract. Even with a small retention, the remainder cap space will make room for Pears' contract.
  3. Right now, he's not on the (cap friendly) roster. He will have the same chance as everyone else at training camp, but he'll have his work cut out for him. Being waiver exempt will make it even harder (much like Podz).
  4. If Tanner can make the team, he should play. He has more value in the bottom 6, than a lot of other players. He might even be good enough to play alongside Miller, bringing some grit to the line. Beau($4.15m) is not suited for the bottom 6, so if he can't make the top 6, I hope they can trade him; maybe giving Hogs a chance. They can still move a couple of guys to Abby as well if needed. Kuzy Pete Mik Hogs Miller Bo Pears Suter Gar Josh Blue Pods Dries Very interchangeable group of Ws. Lots of lineup options. I like the lunch bucket approach.
  5. That is a good interview with Tocchet. I like how frank and direct Tocc is about the plan for the team, the changes needed and the process for the change. It's not as much about the individual points, rather, more about the willingness to "to sacrifice certain parts of their game for the team." He stated that he has talked to the core group throughout the summer. "When I talk to the leadership group, they’re not talking about goals and assists. They’re talking about changing the narrative". I also like that he is bringing the Sedins up to help out with the PP. He also believes the newcomers will have a positive effect on the PK and overall defensive game (which will ultimately help Demko)'. Talk is talk until we see the team committed to the new agenda. Hopefully it will start showing early in the season, so they can get a good jump on the season.
  6. 4 yrs is a long time in the NHL and many things can happen in a players' personal life and professional life. It's hard to predict what choices a player would make at that point. Is it that important for Quinn to play alongside his brothers? Will Quinn be absorbed by leading his team that has finally become a solid SC contender during his tenure? Will he have a family and want to raise his children in a preferable place(s)? It's highly unlikely that Quinn will be had for 'free' by any team. He will likely be a highly sought after dman by many teams; some that may be more attractive to him than the Devils. If/when Hughes decides to move on from Vancouver, there will certainly be teams that will present some decent trade offers. Being joined at the hip with your siblings is not the end all-be all in life. There are so many other factors that can affect one's decisions.
  7. I don't think it was an easy move to NYI for Bo. After playing his entire career in Vancouver, I would think it was a tough adjustment for him. I'm sure he will pull things together for this season. He's a player that can score (back to back +30g), drive to the net and win faceoffs; all are badly needed on the Islander team.
  8. Over the next 4 yrs the team and cap will face radical changes with so many contracts expiring end. A variety of prospects will make the team (along with their elcs) during the next 1-4 seasons. There will also be increases in salary cap in the coming year(s). Alvin has to be very savvy when it comes to signing (non drafted) players to fill in the roles that the rookies aren't ready for (hopefully he will do a better job than Benning). The real concern for the OEL contract will be in the 24/25 + 25/26 seasons, when the dead cap goes up to $+4.7m. By the time Hughes' contract is due, the current Canuck team will be unrecognizable.
  9. An interesting article on Conor that speaks of his outstanding determination and character. https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/longform/inside-conor-garlands-fearless-and-endearing-approach-to-the-game/ Here are some relevant excerpts from the link... “He’s by far the most competitive player that I’ve ever coached. He just had ‘compete’ ingrained in his DNA.” -Darren Rumble (coach Moncton Wildcats). “You just saw guys gravitate to him, you know?” says Rick Tocchet, the Coyotes’ head coach at the time. “[Clayton] Keller, [Jakob] Chychrun, Phil Kessel, they were together constantly. And he was kind of the ringleader there.” Rick Tocchet “I mean, he scored a goal in Edmonton where there was a slapshot that went off his face into the net — and he scored another goal that game,” says Tocchet. “You know, he had cuts all over his face, and he’s interviewing with Hockey Night in Canada. I think that kind of took off, like, ‘Hey man, this guy’s not afraid.’” Rick Tocchet Tocchet remembers one particular conversation with the winger when he saw those gears turning. “We were at centre ice at the start of the year, and I said to him, ‘You’re not an 18-minute player in my eyes,’” the coach recalls of the moment, back when Garland was averaging around 14 minutes a night. “He looked me in the eyes, and he challenged me — he goes, ‘Well, make me an 18-minute player. Coach me into an 18-minute player.’” So Tocchet hit him with some hard truths. “I said, ‘You’re going to hear some stuff that you might not like. You’ve got to be more structured, you’ve got to play better defensive hockey. I love the fact that you’re an instinctual player, but you’ve also got to be a system guy, too, when you need to be.’ That was one thing that he took to heart. He worked on his game, watched video, worked on that hard in practice. “The one thing he does is the next day, he shows up and he’s raring to go again. Even if he had a bad night or he didn’t agree with a coach or he didn’t like his game, the next day, he punches the clock again.” By the end of his final year in Arizona, Garland’s average ice time sat at 17:55. “[It’s] obviously a pressure cooker there[Van], but I think he embraces that. He wants that,” says Tocchet. “He wants to be on the ice, 2–2 game with six minutes left and the pressure on him to make something happen. … I think he wants to meet it head on. ‘Get me out there. Let me have the puck in these situations — if I don’t produce, it’s on me.’ I think that’s his attitude, and I think that’s the attitude that you have to have when you go into those markets.” Tocchet “Conor’s earned everything he’s got,” Donato says. “At every level, he produced. And even though he was producing, he would never get the respect. … Now in pro, he’s still producing and doing those things, and there’s still people that doubt him. But I think that’s what drives Conor.” Ryan Donato Whether you doubt him or believe, know that Conor Garland will come back, time and time again. He’ll keep pushing and clawing and battling, as he always has — it’s just the way he’s wired, says Tocchet. It’s that, above all else, that stands out to the coach when he thinks back on their time together in Arizona. That fire. “A lot of times I remember, the last couple years, he was in the middle of things, in a scrum. They’re punching him in the head, he’s sticking in there, he’s yelling at them — and then he’s right back the next shift, right in that same area again,” Tocchet says. “It’s tough to go back in that area again, with those big defencemen — who wants to get hit in the face again, right? But I think it shows the other team, man, this guy’s not going away, you know? “He’s not going to go away.” Tocchet ***************************************************************************************************************************** Grit, determination, driven, high energy, pest, leadership, fearless= CHARACTER We haven't seen his best yet.
  10. I think Martin should be given a 2nd chance, as there are various circumstance that the OP has pointed out in his post. He is clearly a much better backup, but his game was sabotaged by the *hit show that was Vancouver's 22-23 season.
  11. Hmm...sounds familiar. I guess the difference is that Podz has always shown the potential to become a power forward, whereas we haven't seen that yet in Klim (although Podz has 2yrs on him). In his first NHL season, Podz was an exciting player; often being labelled 'Moose' or 'Bull' by his teammates and coaches. His second year was filled with team dysfunction and time spent in Abby. It seems he has lost his confidence and has fallen to the rookie default of 'always playing it safe', hence the 'let it hang' comment. Thankfully, in his interviews, Podz sounds like he got Tocc's message and is working hard to follow through on it. I would love to see Podz end up as Miller's righty, but Tocc has suggested that he might potentially end up on Pete's line. https://www.reddit.com/r/canucks/comments/112s2cd/batchelor_i_asked_rick_tocchet_about_moving/?rdt=61797
  12. Leaving his homeland at 18yrs and coming to a country where he doesn't speak the language shows character, as well as determination. Not many 18yr olds play in the AHL either. I have no doubt the Abby coaching staff will have Klim working on his overall game this season, which will make him a more complete player. I don't see him challenging Podz (power forward), but he could become a 3RW in a couple of years. He's only 20yrs, so he's got some time on his side.
  13. It certainly isn't unanimous among the fans, but it appears that Tocc wants Hughes, which is a huge advantage for Captain Quinn.
  14. Oops, my bad. I was confusing him with another prospect (Mukhamadullin-for some reason I thought he was with the Rangers, but it was the Devils). I'm unsure about Laffy, although I do know that the developmental time for power forwards can take longer. Hopefully Wayne's scouting abilities are better than his coaching! Still, I don't like the possibility of finding another #1C, which could end up being a disaster for our team. They will lose assets acquiring another C, who will likely be a mid-tier talent.
  15. Pete's a franchise player; Miller hasn't played an NHL game and Laffy has been rather ordinary so far. If the Canucks trade Pete, I would want a young 1st line C (not sure Chytill is good enough) and then go from there... It would be a big loss for the Canucks. If he wants to mess about with a short term, then I hope the Nucks don't give him an NMC as well. We don't need another Tkachuck situation. Personally I will be really disappointed if he won’t sign long term. He is only going to get better each year and will be super fun to watch.
  16. There are others with great potential... LDs RDs Hirose - Johansson - 1-2yrs away Kudryatsev - Brzustewicz - 2-3yrs away Maybes... Jurmo - McWard/Woo
  17. I'm pretty sure he grew up in Vancouver and was likely a fan of the Sedins. He knows about the jerseys in the rafters.
  18. So true. Quinn is a young man that has his own trails to blaze. Maybe one day when his career is winding down he will get a chance to play on the same team with one or both brothers.
  19. The only player on the Oilers that is overpaid is Nurse. You can argue about Bouchard, but those 17pts in 12 playoffs game last season makes Oiler fans happy going forward. Meanwhile, the Canucks have Boeser, Beau, Garland, Myers and multiple years of paying OEL's buyout.
  20. Kind of a funny statement coming from a Nuck fan whose team is often overpaying their players and have a track record for buying out severely overpaid players. Our team's salary cap looks way more 'bloated' than the Oilers'. Regarding this group of players; you might have a point with Ekholm, but it's early days for him. Janmark's, $1mx1yr is not bad for a bottom 6 FW. RNH, Drais, McD scored 104/128/153pts last season; so I doubt anyone is complaining about their $ I agree that Reaves is overpaid (mostly due to the 3yr term), but Giordano at $.800x1yr is fine.

    Captaincy

I like all 3 of the candidates, although Pete doesn't give me the impression that he wants the job. In the end, it will be decided by the folks that know these guys and their games very well. Hopefully dealing with the horrible media in this city won't become just one person's job. The 'As' should step up and help out as well.
  22. Detroit is in rebuild mode and is focussed on preparing and developing their young. As far as Suter goes, he was the odd man out at C. With the Compher signing, they now have Larkin, Copp, Compher and Rasmussen as their top 4 Cs. Their latest draft pic (Danielson) will likely make the team '24/25 season as well. Same thing on defence. Very solid vets surrounding young players and two more prospects will make the jump within a couple of years. Really like how they are managing their rebuild.
  23. Flames will have a tough season this year. With their top players underperforming and others wanting to abandon ship, I suspect the locker room will feel heavy. I just don't see them putting it together and finding the success they want. Even worse, is that they have cap problems, so they can't really make the changes they want. The bright side is that they will get good returns on the players that want out, but their track recorded for that doesn't look too good. The Canucks will return with a much more positive and confident team.
  24. I think they will sign Bear to a show me contract when he's recovered from his injury. If they can move Myers, he would be a good replacement on the right side. I think this lineup allows Quinn to have less toi, when needed. Hughes Cole Soucy Hronik Irwin Bear Brise Julssen
  25. Well this is the problem, isn't it? Those 2 rookies have 5 NHL games between them. Drysdale has only played 1 season, but has shown good potential. Not a good idea to rush the d, just because there is no one else that can play. Myers would bring an opportunity to take much of the pressure off these young players both in toi as well as roles.
