Lancaster
What a selfish Ruskie.... turning down guaranteed money that is handicapping his team salary cap-wise and fiscally-wise. lol
Mike Vanderhoek
Hopefully no team's even contact him, I bet there are many teams who would not even consider it. I bet he never play's in the NHL again, I would be prefectly fine with that.
VanGnome
Actually in three years he is still NJ property but is an RFA
theo5789
So if the Canucks had done something like this to find a loophole in the rulebook, they would be penalized later on. I wonder what happens to NJ. I assume nothing.

Drouin
Obviously he was bound to leave sooner rather than later considering he had a hideous contract. He'll definitely be back after he makes 50-60M.
Nuxfanabroad
As I posted a couple days ago, this whole ruse was set up between Lamorreillo & Bettman-it's purpose was primarily to discourage all gm's from long-term, front-loading deals. At least until they got the new CBA hammered out. This league's an old boy's private club. All they care about is rigging the deck to assist major US markets. Heretic
KOVALCHUK INKS FOUR-YEAR DEAL WITH KHL'S SKA ST PETERSBURG http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=427755
Dogbyte
Actually, you should get your facts straight before stating false information as fact. 1. Kovalchuk is 30 years old. 2. Kovalchuk has 11 NHL seasons. In no way shape or form would he be a Group II player from a contractual standpoint. The point is, he "retired" from the league, which voids his Standard Player Contract freeing himself and the New Jersey Devils from any contractual and financial obligation. There are no rules prohibiting players from ending their retirement and returning to the league. The ONLY contention with this whole saga is clearly one of "Cap circumvention" which only the first of two factors has been placed into effect; the contract has been voided. Now if he were to come back to the league and re-sign with the Devils at a lower cap hit, then perhaps a case could be made for collusion between the Devils, Ilya and his agent; but that's a tough stretch. Primal Optimist
I think this is pure and blatant cap circumvention, but not for the reasons normally associated with that. This is being done to save the franchise in New Jersey. It is broke. The league will turn a blind eye to it to save the franchise in jersey.
