NHL GMs looking at losing the shootout

Recommended Posts

Shootouts are exciting for sure but I hate the extra point being awarded for that. The extra point earned through shootout is not earned through a team effort but effort of few individuals (shooters and the goalie) and really has no place in hockey, which is a team sport. 4-on-4 for 10 minutes is a good idea but I think the game should end as a tie rather than going to shootout if tied after 10 minutes of OT.

I think 10 min might just be too much ice time when playing back to backs etc.

Totally random and not thought out: have the shoot outs, but don't award points and only use shoutout wins for tie breaks: still exciting to watch, no direct impact on standings, but still some reason for the teams to try.

I like the shootout, but in moderation.

I've always been a proponent of extending the 4-on-4 to 7 or 8 minutes. 10 minutes could work too.

I'm not a huge fan of the 3v3 idea, simply because I like the team aspect of the game and 3v3 doesn't have nearly as much as 4v4 does.

Still, even adding a 3v3 OT would be better than all the shootouts we do.

To clarify: I don't want to get rid of the shootout completely, just make it more rare.

2 points for a reg win.

2 points for an OT win.

1 point for an OT loss.

1 point for a SO win.

0 points for a SO loss.

I think this would encourage teams to not drag the game into a shootout and go for the win in reg or OT.

Edit: Just gave this some more thought and this idea seems a little confusing, especially how it would appear in the standings. They should just get rid of the shootout and bring back the tie with no point for an OT loss.

In order to ban what happened with Emery, just make it an automatic 5 game (to start) suspension if any goalie enters the other team's zone. if both goalies are willing participants, they should be allowed to fight in the neutral zone. also, ref's should be under advisement that the second a goalie enters the other team's zone they should be tackled/escorted off the ice before he has a chance to attack the other goalie.

Exactly. Then the overtime issue is solved in my opinion.

IMO each game should have the same number of points awarded - be it 2/0 and 1/1 or 3/0, 2/1, 1/2 or whatever. It makes the standings more meaningful (winning percentages etc).

Too many teams have mastered forcing the shootout in tight games and then winning with their shootout specialists.

Phoenix, Columbus, and Nashville come to mind. Small market teams that rely on the shootout to pad their point totals.

That's what R-O-W is for.

I'd like to see points gone all together and adopt the W-L-% like they have in MLB and NBA. 4 columns is getting to be a lot, and as of a year or 2 ago they added the ROW. I don't have a end all suggestion on how to determine the win, but I think there's just too many columns in determining records now.

The only problem I have with extended overtime is if games overlap. Van usually plays at 7 if say a Leafs game extends into overtime we miss probably half the first period of the Canucks game. Shootouts end the game fairly quickly and we usually just miss puck drop and some change. This is usually if Canucks play on TSN or CBC though. As a Canuck fan I have to admit we miss out on some points because we have no shootout specialists so I am for no shootouts in that way.
