[Signing] Blues sign Jeremy Welsh

Recommended Posts

Linden Vey was a fourth rounder :D

Who has fewer NHL games than both Dalpe and Welsh ...

Dalpe had already played 3 part-seasons in the NHL by Vey's age ...

Just because we have Vey, it doesn't mean he's some Crosby who has been waiting in the wings ... He could very well end up like Dalpe (who had a better draft pedigree and just as much success at the AHL level as Vey).

Vey is still very much an unproven player.

Best of luck to Welsh. A decent depth center to have in your system - played hard when he was called up and was as effective as you could ask him to be. Played 19 games at just under 7 minutes a game - was over 50% in the faceoff circle (51.1) and was a mere -1 in a fourth line checking role. Not bad. Good size and relatively aggressive - not hard to see why Gillis thought he and Dalpe may have more value than Tochkin and a mid round pick.

The youth pretty much made Welsh redundant - Gaunce, Horvat, Cassels, Vey, McCann, Fox, Labate, Lain - the Canucks have a few centers in the system to make room for....

Welsh didn't have much upside at all.

As for complaining about the drafts, we do that, yup, but then go onto beg for more undersized garbage in the '14 draft as well as justify the trading of good draft picks for more rental garbage.

Will we learn?

Our drafting a player development is the precise reason why this team needs to seriously tank this season.

Virtanen, Demko, Tryamkin, Pettit, Stewart are undersized?

Are you mental, or do you mean the people that wanted squirts like Ehlers?

That kid is a battler, I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up like Hemsky.

I was disappointed in Welsh's play when sent back to Utica. I thought his games in Van were pretty

reasonable, better than Dalphe. Nothing wrong with Gillis taking a shot with these two.

AS DeNiro was mentioning about the drafting. Canucks have been brutal. When you look at ANA's late round drafting it is impressive.

On a side note, I didn't even realize we didn't qualify Sauve...

So through 2008-2010 we only have four players from those drafts still in our system (0 from 2008). Joe Cannata, Peter Andersson, Patrick McNally, and Alex Friesen. All long shots to make the NHL at this point.

Wow Gillis screwed us in those first 3 drafts.

Kassian is effectively part of the return from those drafts. So there's that. And Rodin's rights are still retained. Sauve was looking like he'd pan out to be a solid bottom-pairing guy, but a freak car accident curbed his development.

Then Gillis went all-in to make a run or two with his core. And he was right to do so. Ran into a stacked Chicago team a couple of times, and then just fell short due to rampant injuries.

Drafting wasn't too bad in Gillis' tenure, all things considered (not too great either, though). But the whole Luongo/Schneider debacle was reason enough for a fresh start.

Yes, and in addition, something that Gillis clearly stated as a calculated intention was to use other means of replenishing the youth in the system (when he spent some futures during those contending years) - which he effectively did in free agency - signing Tanev, Lack, Eriksson, Lain, and claiming players like Stanton and Weise on waivers...

Some of his moneyball signings weren't so bad either.

People love to microcriticize in hindsight, pretending that they know (or knew) better.

Drafting in hindsight is easy.

Good point. It doesn't matter if you draft a player, or find another way to acquire him young and cheap. As long as you keep adding young talent to the pool.

And even though the whole Lu/Schneid thing was bungled, I'm not as critical of the end result as some. My preference would have been to go forward with Schneider, but I can't say that having Horvat and Miller instead isn't as good or better for the organization.
