TheRussianRocket.
https://thecanuckway.com/2016/03/01/vancouver-canucks-interest-in-alex-lyon/ Quote The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly one of 15 NHL clubs eager to sign NCAA goaltender Alex Lyon of the Yale Bulldogs. For the Vancouver Canucks, Boston College’s Thatcher Demko seems to be the goaltender of the future. However, according to NEWS 1130 Sports, the Canucks are also interested in signing Yale Bulldogs goalie Alex Lyon — just like 14 other NHL clubs. Lyon, 23, is a junior at Yale University. His .941 save percentage and 1.51 goals-against average are NCAA-best — just slightly better than Thatcher Demko. Demko and Lyon know each other from the 2011-12 season, as Demko backed up Lyon for the USHL Omaha Lancers. Following that season, Demko lost Omaha to play in Boston while Lyon stayed in Omaha for another year. Lyon went undrafted but was invited to the Chicago Blackhawks’ prospect camp in 2014. It took another year for him to get NHL attention, but he finally seems ready to make the jump to the pros. Throughout his career, Lyon won several awards on every level. Last season, he made the All-Ivy League First Team as well as the All-ECAC Hockey First Team. Furthermore, he was a 2015 Mike Richter Award finalist and is nominated again this year. The Mike Richter Award honours the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men’s hockey. It is still unclear whether Demko will ink his NHL entry-level deal with the Canucks this summer or return to college for his senior year. Demko wants to win a championship with BC. If he succeeds this season, he will probably be willing to sign an NHL deal. If not, he will likely want to try again next season before making the jump to the pros. Lyon would be the perfect player to come in if Demko takes his time. If the Canucks can find a way to get rid of Ryan Miller and his $6 million cap hit, their goalie tandem for next year could be Lyon and Jacob Markstrom while gaining important salary cap space for free agency. Even if Miller stays — which might be the better scenario as long as Lyon has not proven to be effective at the NHL level — Lyon could get used to the pro game in the American Hockey League and join the Canucks later during the season. Related: Canucks Risking to Lose Thatcher Demko Having both Lyon and Demko would be amazing for the Canucks. Well, kind of. We all know what having two elite goaltenders can look like in Vancouver. Still, there are worse scenarios than having two elite goaltenders. Especially when you have no idea of either one will turn out to be elite. Signing both Lyon and Demko by the summer of 2017 would be huge for both the Utica Comets and the Vancouver Canucks. But, before we get too excited, we need to remember that half the league — maybe even more — are reported to be interested. As of today, a club like the Edmonton Oilers is probably more attractive for a young goaltender with elite potential than the Canucks. In Edmonton, for example, Lyon could potentially earn the starting job within the next year, on a team that should be back in the playoff race with a healthy Connor McDavid. In Vancouver, he would have to pass Miller, Markstrom and Demko on a team that is unlikely to be successful anytime soon. At least Vancouver is a beautiful city (last pro argument when we have nothing else to offer). Well sign me up for this. One of the best goalies in college. Free prospect never hurt anyone. Depending on if Miller is still a Canuck come start of next season, Lyon could possibly be pushed right on to the main roster as backup to Markstrom. If Miller is still here, would be a much needed and welcomed addition to Utica's crease. ...guessing this decision goes hand in hand on what Demko decides to do. If he leaves college and signs a pro contract, then there's a likelihood Lyon doesn't see much of an opportunity for him to succeed/get a chance within the Canucks organization and signs elsewhere. However if Demko stays for another year in Boston, one would assume the chances of Lyon signing here drastically go up.
RonMexico
Man CDC would implode if we somehow weren't able to sign Demko...
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Canucks Army also had a post on this yesterday: http://canucksarmy.com/2016/3/1/canucks-interested-in-yale-ufa-goaltender-alex-lyon I'd be happy if we signed him (and a couple other college FAs), but right now we're just one of fifteen NHL clubs that are interested. We could definitely use another goalie in the system though (although I suspect we will draft one this year with one of our mid round picks). Apricot
We need to get Demko signed asap, this is really bugging me.
Z Hockey
An NCAA signing would help ease my frustration of the Trade deadline as it would for many, but of course it's a goaltender and not a D Man or playmaking winger. Knowing the Canucks we will as usual probably be out GMed and Lyon will sign elsewhere, but no way we lose Demko, no way... Although it's concerning considering our asset management recently (Forsling, Corrado, Cracknell).

HC20.0
I can't see the Canucks not signing Demko, especially with the numbers he's posting... If we got Lyon though, hoo man that'd be a good problem, having two good goalie prospects, plus Markstrom.

Nucker 67
Nahhhh. All we need is another goalie controversy. Do we really need this guy? Markstrom is still young and Demko will back him up. These two could be our goaltenders for the next 10+ years. I'm all good with that plan.

nergish
what on earth would this possibly have to do with us signing Demko? Thatcher has the entire organization behind him. He is our guy, literally our top prospect and imho THE top goaltending prospect in the world. This kid is not slipping through our fingers, he's our guy. I do fear we'll have to trade him if we can't get a proper 1C or 1D in the next 2-3 years, but ideally he is our guy between the pipes for at least a decade. flickyoursedin
If signing Lyon makes Demko feel like the pipes are too crowded and chooses that dreaded NCAA free agent route I'd be weary of signing Lyon.
Nucker 67
Lyon won't sign with the Canucks knowing Markstrom is in place to replace Miller, and Demko is waiting in the wings. He'll want to sign with a team where he could become the eventual starter. He won't get that chance in Vancouver.
Tiger Gino Brash Ryp
I'll let you know how this will go.. Canucks will be one of the last few teams he'll be considering, maybe the last 2, but they'll be the bridesmaid yet again
HerrDrFunk
Obviously I want Demko signed sooner rather than later but he should stay in school for another year and finish his degree.
