2016-17 Utica Comets Thread

Recommended Posts

3-1 Comets the final, shots are 26-22 for Toronto. Great performance by the Comets despite a parade to the penalty box that was part poor discipline, part poor officiating. Demko and the Comets win their ninth straight on home ice with a gutsy effort against the division leaders. Impressive games by Cassels and McEneny as mentioned; the Bancks-Hamilton-Labate had another good grinding game as well. The Comets also get two goals on the powerplay at a time when they couldn't be needed more, and both units look like they're closer to being on the same page now. Utica will hit the road to play Rochester tomorrow at 4:00 pst. Three stars: Demko, Hamilton, Kunyk.

With the victory and the St. John's loss, the Comets officially hold the final playoff spot at the moment!

Toronto, 85 pts (72 gp)
Syracuse, 82 pts (72 gp)

Albany, 79 pts (72 gp)

Big time win for the Comets over the Marlies 3-1. Marlies turned it on for most of the 3rd period but Demko and the Comets held their ground and prevented the Marlies from getting quality scoring chances. LaBate tipped a shot home in the 1st on the power play off a point shot by Billins and Robak getting the secondary helper. Kunyk finished off a pretty series of passing plays by the Comets with McEneny finding Grenier who managed to feed it over for Archie who picks Kunyk in front of net and roofs it home. Got scary for a bit in the 3rd with the Marlies taking control of play for the most part but Comets defended real well. Hamilton potted a empty netter home off good back checking by everyone including Rendulic who was able to steal the puck from the Marlies player and find Hamilton who did the rest. Sautner, McEneny particularly impressed me making clutch defensive plays every time they were on the ice. Jake had a solid game. Didn't get on the scoresheet but registered a couple of shots including a shot off a turnover he created but was easily gloved by Sparks. Demko with a 25 save performance. Final shot totals: 26-22 Marlies. Demko, Hamilton, Kunyk were the 3 stars in tonight's win. Hope they keep it going vs Rochester tomorrow as they try and clinch a playoff spot! Go Comets!

Anyone know Jakes total ice time? Seems his line saw less ice time than other lines.

The AHL doesn't track ice time, but the Marlies had seven powerplays and Virtanen doesn't kill penalties. The Comets also had six powerplays of their own and he wasn't used on the PP today either - Rendulic has been on the second unit in place of him since he got back. So he didn't see as much ice as usual; its also compounded by the fact that Kunyk and Valk (his linemates) get PP time so all of the special teams minutes really throws off the line rotations.

On top of the special teams throwing things off, Comets led the game the whole way so Green went back to Cassels, Bancks, and Zalewksi lines more often than he might have otherwise if he was looking for some more offense.  Jake and Valk didn't play much.  They will be rested for tomorrow against the Amerks.

Cassels played a ton of minutes and really played very well.  Drew a penalty, defended well, faced off well.  Agitated.  Nice to see him get Green's confidence.

Labate was very good through the middle third of the ice.  He kept coming up with pucks and played a physical game as usual with Bancks and Hamilton.  With the Archibald, Zalewski, Grenier line you have a heavy group for the AHL, then you follow that with Bancks Hamilton Labate who arent quite as big but they play big, and Cassels Carcone and Rendulic acquited themselves well on the forecheck.

Pedan had a pretty good game tonight I thought.  A real presence back there and he did well on the penalty kill.  Subban had a couple of misplays but he has come along.  This was a tense, well played game.  The refs inserted themselves a little but that was the only complaint.  A few questionable penalties called on the Comets, and maybe one bad one for the Marlboroughs too.

Pelletier with the healthy scratch, and Negrin and Shields rested.  Not sure if Green will fiddle with the lineup that played tonight.

Big one against St. Johns Sunday and we should be favored tomorrow against the Amerks.

Well It's a lot easier challenging AHL defenders than it is NHL defenders.  You can't put all the blame on WD for the Canucks crappy offense and lack of creativity

Heard Mike Santorelli on 1040 today say that Willie's systems stifles offensive creativity.
