I was just thinking to myself, for players that have played both as defensemen and as forwards in the NHL, how does the NHL determine under what category they fall under? Brent Burns (Norris nominee I know) and Big Buff come to mind. They have been playing D lately but can just as easily be slotted in and called forwards. Might be a little silly to ask, but I mean, it makes you wonder if teams can benefit of something like this. If they desperately want to protect 4 D and 6 F, can they get away with it?

Since the only players that do this that are worth taking (Burns, Byfuglien) will be protected, it likely won't come up, but this is a good question.

The hockey rink at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is starting to take shape!

Is that a shot of the season ticket holders?

I think many people, including yourself, will be surprised at the amount of hockey fans Las Vegas has.

And the thousands of thousands of fans from other teams that visit Vegas each year.  They will also attract the non hockey fans as a 'novelty act' when they visit the city.  They really don't have to have as many season ticket holders as other teams.

Everybody I'm talking to about the Las Vegas expansion says it'll fail within a decade and will end up on welfare support from Bettman like Arizona and Carolina and I'm inclined to agree, there's a reasno why there's no NBA team there and a reason why no football team of various leagues has succeeded.  It's just not a sport city.

As mentioned above, most game attendance will be from other cities, that won't last very long.

I'm not sure if surprised would be the right word, unless you added "pleasantly" in front of it. :)

I don't doubt that there are a goodly number of hockey fans in that part of the world. The WHL Canucks used to play against a number of teams who came out of that area, but they were/are all smallish market teams (eg. Salt Lake City Golden Eagles).

I'm thinking that the Vegas team will sell a lot of seats. How many of those seats will actually have butts in them is another story. Paid attendance will likely be much higher than the number of people who went through the turnstiles.

I'm thinking that the Vegas team will sell a lot of seats. How many of them will actually be bought by hockey fans who live in the area, versus how many of these seats are going to be sold as blocks to the casinos to be comped to their guests remains to be seen.

I haven't seen anything about the team restricting who can buy seats, so I'm guessing there will be future stories of local fans not being able to get a ticket to a playoff game because they are mostly gone to fans from outside of town who are there for a few days of gambling, or, some human interest stories of how a casino donated a number of seats (which they otherwise couldn't get rid of) to a charitable organization.

Otherwise, I wish them all the best.

                                                  regards,  G.

PS - I expect a thriving market for Coyotes tickets.

The London Knights have blocked the Las Vegas NHL team from using the name "Knights" in Canada, unless they want to pay them a pretty penny.

“The London Knights own the name in Canada and to acquire the name from London is not economically feasible,” said Foley, adding there should be “clarity” on the name issue in the next 30 days. “In the U.S., ‘Knights’ are fine. But we can’t use it in Canada"

Out of all names they could pick from for the team, they went with Knights? Why not Aces or something like that?

I remember when they had that XFL football team, casinos and hotels bought seats to try and sell to guests as part of room packages.  I can see that happening with the NHL team.

They can't go with Knights.  They wanted to because Foley is a graduate of West Point and Army Black Knights is the name of their athletics teams.

The NHL does not want them to use a gambling reference.

The Las Vegas NHL franchise has narrowed its search down to three names after being unable to acquire the rights to the name "Knights" in Canada.

The team will ether be known as the Desert Hawks, the Red Hawks or the Nighthawks.

I'm not feeling this one either..

Imagine Chicago play against them and the crowd chanting "Go Hawks Go!"

That'll be fun trying to figure out which team they are rooting for..
