JB on TSN1040: draft + Lucic + Stamkos + PK Subban talk

If I were the gm, this would be my simple and quite honestly pretty likely 3 moves to make my template going into next season. My 3 moves to get this team back on track, and thankfully it looks like me and Benning are on the same wavelength on this one.

  1. Draft Pierre Luc-Dubois
  2. Sign Philip Larsen to fill out 7 man defensive core. Andrey Pedan becomes 8th man if he wants to stay.
  3. Sign Milan Lucic in free agency. I expect a high price tag in free agency. If not (Lucic then Brouwer, Ladd, Eriksson or a cheap Staal would be solid.)

Roster going into next year and top prospects list

Forward group

  • D Sedin - H Sedin - Hansen: (Sedins do their magic with a forechecker, their partner can vary from Hansen, Virtanen or Etem.)
  • (Lucic/UFA) - Sutter - Virtanen: (I feel like Lucic and Sutter would play well together. Lucic teaches Virtanen to be a PWF.)
  • Baertschi - Horvat - Etem: (Horvat splits defensive load with second line. Baertschi and Etem work their chemistry.)
  • Burrows - Granlund - Dorsett: (Dependable defensive wings, skilled center ready to move up in case of injury.)
  • (Gaunce - Higgins): (Gaunce versatility allows him to plug 4th line center or LW. Higgins provides veteran presence off scratch.)

Defence Group

  • Edler - Tanev: (Dependable first pairing we have seen. Pressure is taken off due to second line)
  • Hutton - Gudbranson: (Great second paring taking pressure off first pairing. Scoring on left combined with stay at home D on right)
  • Sbisa - Larsen: (Great third paring. Larson provides marginal scoring and PP touch and Sbisa provides all around presence)
  • (Tryamkin): Tryamkin's versatility in LD or RD allows him to hop in given first injury. He will still get 65+ games. Ease him into the NHL at the beginning of the season. He's physically ready, he just needs to learn the small subtleties before he steps in.)

Goaltending

  • Miller: Starts the season as the starter and teaches Lack how to win. He was a Vezina winner and took the US olympic team to overtime against Canada. It may be his last season, or at least last season as a starter, but I don't expect him to end as starter
  • Markstrom: Starts as backup, waits for his turn and then hopefully steps up.

Burrows, Higgins, Sbisa, and Miller are all subject to trade if there's value, but if not, we can deal with their contracts the upcoming season. But that is a solid team to me that can play a versatile style. Fast, rugged, or skilled two-way hockey. It would definately be a tough team to play against, and honestly, I think playoff worthy if players remain relatively healthy.

Top 5 prospects.

  1. Pierre-Luc Dubois: C/LW
  2. Brock Boeser: RW
  3. Thatcher Demko: G
  4. Jordan Subban: RD
  5. Troy Stecher: RD

The 4 skaters on this list are all about a season away. Maybe some will be 2, and maybe some might even crack the roster opening night like Hutton, Virtanen and McCann. But they are all close. Demko will take his time as goaltenders tend to take a while, but Markstrom will hold it down until then. But the 4 skaters all provide something this team needs. A potential top first line center, a potential elite scoerer, and 2 potential puck moving, pp specialist defensmen. This team will be in good shape. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you a solid team with a solid future.

How are we going to afford to sign Lucic and keep Burrows and Higgins?

One or both will be gone if we sign Lucic.

Say what you want about jim, but you have to agree that the man is trying tk make this team better. I always felt that gillis was very passive. Deals were flying right by us like we were standing still. With benning it now seems we are in on everyone.

Its exciting to be a canuck fan right now. Hopefully the last couple years has been the birthing of a Stanley cup team.

Agreed. Gillis was greedy. He waited for overpayment to the point that teams passed on the deals. It was very frustrating. Gillis did do a good job of building a serious cup contender though. I have to give him respect for that

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC

Looks like Bergevin will be addressing the Subban talk
Bergevin meets with media at 615 ET. Surely that will be a modestly attended scrum

Let me guess....

...we're not actively shopping him... wouldn't be doing my job as GM if I didn't listen to offers...

God if that's all the cost is, the deal should be done already. That's a steal for the Oilers!

PK has to have some say in it, I just don't think he'd be moved to Edmonton against his will.

Bergevin might just be dangling it out there to show the fan base in Montreal that he's doing all he can.

Possible, sure, but why would you do it?

I was thinking, they probably want the 5th overall to draft Dubois. If we trade now they might not get Dubois depending on Edmonton.

I imagine if we get Subban that we will also get their 9th overall, with it we would probably want Brown. If we trade now, Brown might be selected before the 9th overall.

If we wait, select Dubois, and wait until Montreal's 9th overall, Montreal will know if they can trade us for Dubois and we will know if we make the trade that we can select Brown.

If its going to happen it will be like this, and go down right after the 4th pick. Edmonton has already lost out on the big FA names, other than Hamhuis, and I can't see PK wanting to spend the rest of his career in Alberta, so Edm has to draft a top D man.

I'm sure Edmonton would do it if Montreal threw in their 9th. Maybe Yakupov and Draisaitl?

To Edmonton:

Subban

9th Overall Pick

To Montreal:

Draisaitl

Yakupov

4th Overall Pick

The Oilers would then be in a position to draft a defensemen like Chychryn.
