There's some D's and F's I'd probably prefer but I sure wouldn't be upset.

The reason I hold that option open is Benning likes to create competition for certain positions. Drafting another stellar netminder in the same spot as he took Demko could be right up Benning's alley.

Not much not to like about Oettenger as he did a masterful job for BU

I would...too many other good prospects will likely still be available at 33. Guys like Nikita Popugaev, Shane Bowers, Henri Jokiharju and Ryan Poehling are much more intriguing for me...

Bowers and Poehling will be long gone by the time #33 rolls around.

Not saying I'm on the Oettenger train, you are right that there are plenty of talented prospects at 33 but I'm saying don't be surprised

If you want the Canucks to take a goalie, which might make some sense long term, then wait for the CBJ 2nd to do it. Goalies fall far these days...

and then you take a look at Ukka-Pekka Luukkonen.

Another top G in the system?

Nope not at all. The kid looks like a stud that would be a good backup plan if Demko doesn't pan out.

He'd also be a bluechip prospect that could be flipped for another high end prospect at a later date.

Hopefully we can snag a high end D prospect at that spot though.

Seriously doubt those guys slide past #35

Take Pittsburgh for the latest example

Fleury has fought to keep his perch. If they lose Murray they still have a very promising Tristan Jarry coming up.

If we get a pick for Tanev, I would seriously love to get Oettenger or even the Finn at #33. Preferably Oettenger after his freshman year. He can join Utica right after Demko Comes up to Canucks.

Goalies fall these days though. It's a definite trend.

Yeah the only goalie selected in the first round the last 3 drafts was Samsonov, to the Caps one pick before the Canucks took Boeser.

Oettinger looks dynamite, but no way i pick a goalie at 33, unless we got another 1st round pick through trade.

I wouldn't even then, if we hold onto the CBJ pick. If Hart can fall to where he did, and I don't think there is a Hart in this draft, then the second or third best goalie is fine.

I mean, I'd love to take another good goalie, I really would, but the value can be found in the latter half of the 2nd or early 3rd often. We aren't needing another Demko, we need a guy who could take a little longer but get there.

Here is a list of some of the goalies taken relatively high in the last few years:

2016:

48 - Hart

54- Parsons

55 - Gustavsson

59 - Fitzpatrick

63 - Woll

88 - Ingram

2015:

22 - Samsonov

42 - Blackwood

70 - Sandstrom

75 - Vladar

76 - Hill

77 - Montembeault

2014:

34 - MacDonald

36 - Demko

37 - Nedeljokovic

39 - Vanacek

59 - Halverson

78 - Sorokin

2013:

36 - Fucale

44 - Jarry

59 - Comrie

99 - Saros

2012:

19 - Vasilevsky

24 - Subban

31 - Dansk

45 - Stolarz

62 - Korpisalo

75 - Gillies

83 - Murray

Plus many more in later rounds.

There's value to be had long after the early 2nd round. It's not where I'd like the team to go. I'd rather go after a RH OD like Jokiharju or someone else first.

I'd be upset if we took him with our 33rd pick. However, I wouldn't be upset taking a goalie in the 3rd round, especially with us having 2(+) 2nd rounders. As of right now, goaltending is our strongest position. We need to stockpile on forward/defensive depth more than anything and there's going to be players that fall from the 1st round ready to be snatched where we're picking.

I'd be happy with any of the following in this order:

Kristian Veselainen (W)

Joshua Norris (C)

Conor Timmins (D)

Henri Jokiharju (D)

Jaret Anderson-Dolan (W)

etc.

I'm hoping we could get another 2nd round pick that way we can pick 2 forwards and a defenseman in the 2nd round.

5th overall: Casey Mittlestadt or Cody Glass

33rd overall: Veselainen or Norris

2nd round pick: Conor Timmins

55th overallpick: Anderson-Dolan

3rd round pick: Best available goaltender

??????

Profit

Dallas could cap dump one of their goalies for their two 2nds....

ranked 25th on Mckeen's hockey, 27th on Future Considerations, and 30th on ISS hockey. It's not totally out of the reach. And yes I'm aware he's had a good u18 showing and it's history of players who've dominated shooting up the ranks
