Lucic may be on the decline but his resume speaks for itself. He earned his contract.

Yes, they all earn more than Gudbranson (and rightfully so) but those are the only 3 tough guys earning more than $4M. The only other guy I can think of is Kevin Bieksa who earns $4M and even that's an overpayment. Fans couldn't wait to dump his contract 2 years ago.

You said it yourself there are only 3 tough guys in the NHL who play well enough to earn more than 4 million. Talk about a limited market! No wonder these guys are so coveted.

As for Bieksa he is a tough middleweight but he would get ragdolled by any of the big 4.

They are extremely coveted and if Gudbranson was one of those guys, I'd gladly open up the vault for him. But the reality is, he's a replacement level player. If he wasn't big/tough, he wouldn't even be in the lineup.

Tanev makes Gudbranson look like the reincarnation of Dana Murzyn. Minus the odd goal Dana would score of course.

We have Gudbranson in his youth, not his prime.

Tanev will be injured again before

Christmas.

Bigger D men take time.

The only true seasoned vets on this squad are the Sedins, Vanek, Gagner, Edler, Tanev, Dorset, Eriksson.

If we have the puck, the other team doesn't even get shots from center ice, nevermind the perimeter.

D playing against some of the better players in the league are going to allow the other team possession and shots no matter how 'good' they are. ^^^Red herring.

Lets do Polak + Nylander for Gudbranson + Gaunce + 3rd?

Nylander isn't going anywhere.

I'd be surprised if the Leafs parted ways with Nylander. That'd be an incredible catch for Benning and Co!!!!

McKenzie last week wrote that the Leafs' strategy is built around the three of Matthews, Marner, Nylander.  He used the word 'seismic' to describe how it would be such a radical change of philosophy to have Nylander available.  He is adamant that the guiding principle of the Shanaplan is to build a contender around those three players.

Thankfully they have Reilly on what could be a really solid contract. They don't need to move any of the "big three" if they can get a Gudbranson type player with JVR. Nylander is more a pipe dream for us. If they move Nylander it's likely for a Seth Jones/Dougie Hamilton type d-man.

Nylander is not a centre, so he’s not returning that level of Dman.  Unless it’s a trade with Ottawa, of course.
