The whining from our resident Utica fans is nauseating.

Don't like the product they're putting on the ice, don't follow the team or go to the games.

As much as you seem to know Benning doesn't care about whats happening in Utica, I can assure you he does. That is one of the things his job relies on, prospect development.

Move the team to Abby or Cali, so you lot can actually see what ECHL hockey is all about.

Considering how well Utica has done since being brought back from oblivion 5-6 years ago, yes this seems incredibly short sighted.  They made the playoffs in the last 4 years with a trip to the final if I remember correctly?

Utica has had season that Nucks fans could only dream to have right now.

So injuries to the NHL team are an ongoing issue mainly on defence and Sutter, who has been injured since we traded for him.

OJ got hurt in Utica, he alone would have addressed many concerns.  Do things need to improve, yes.  But chill Utica fans, JB has proven he can draft, drafted players add depth better than any other way, but it takes time.

Brisbios and Sautner have earned call up time and Gaudette was likely intended for Utica all year, but Sutter.  Had Gaudette been in Utica, there is your center problem fixed, had OJ not been injured, there is your defence fixed.

This happens and it sucks, so what, move on and look to next season.

Are those two elite though?  I see elite D spending time in the A, but can’t think of any recent forwards.

Lots of great forward prospects in the AHL, and have recently graduated.

Dube

Kyrou

Batherson

Bracco

Steele

Carr

Terry

Benson

Necas

Raddysh

Brown

Zadina

The list is very long, not all of them are going to be NHL all stars but a good chunk of them will have good long careers. It ain't just D.

Well just down the road in Syracuse we have watched the following forwards play before heading up to Tampa Bay full time:

High end skilled players

Nikita Kucherov

Yanni Gourde (the kid that Travis Green cut from the Comets first training camp)

Tyler Johnson

Ondřej Palát

Brayden Point* (Point gets an asterisks because he was only a late season and playoff addition to Syracuse as a 19 year old)

Other full time NHL players

Adam Erne

Anthony Cirelli (could move up into that high end skilled position as he continues to develop)

Mathieu Joseph

Cedric Paquette

This is just the Syracuse/Tampa list.  There are plenty of other examples around the league as well.

Most players in the NHL go through the AHL at some point. Huge percentage.

Travis Green played almost 1000 games in his career and he spent the better part of 3 seasons in the AHL.  It takes time for players to develop.  Some have been critical of JG and KL this year in Utica.  They may need 2 or 3 years to be ready to be up on the big club.

It took a 5th round in Shootout but Comets win 2-1.  37-14 shots in favor of Comets and 0/6 on PP.  Lavals goalie Connor LaCouvee was a standout but many shots were right into his chest.  Leighton also had some awesome saves including a breakaway. Arseneau went out after a bad hit.  Seamus Moore was sent out and score the first goal in the SO. Jasek got the game winner.  Belleville Lost but Cleveland won.

In the eight games since Dahlen has been in SJ (per their Twitter lineup posts):

Games 1 & 2: first line

Games 3, 4 & 5: second line

Games 6 & 7: fourth line

Game 8: scratched

Palmu's current year in the Liiga: 18pts in 29GP (0.62 PPG), 0pts in 2 playoff games.

His rookie year: 36pts in 59GP (0.61 PPG), 6pts in 11 playoff games.

Seems like the skilled players that Cull was not developing isn't trending upwards anywhere else either.  For all the complaining about making everyone play a three zone game, Dahlen and Palmu's PNHLe are 31pts and 25pts respectively.  They're nowhere close to being good enough to outscore their mistakes.  I'm sure many former junior stars think they can make the NHL as pure skilled players, but Cull knew that only the truly elite gets to keep an NHL job while being a defensive liability.

Many thought that Dahlen would light it up away from Cull on San Jose's AHL team but I knew better.  His coach there is 61 year old Roy Sommer an old school coach who has been the had coach of the Sharks AHL farm team since the 1998-99 season.  Sommer has developed many players for the Sharks over those years by making sure they are NHL ready and play hard in all three zones.

Edit - and don't forget that Goldobin was a student of Roy Sommer when San Jose gave up on him and traded him to Vancouver.

Chicken and egg scenario. Are the prospects not living up to expectations or is utica stalling development.

As of right now utica top developed player is... sautner? Macewen?

No matter how you look at it, its &^@#ing sad.

If Utica was stalling their development then players should get better once they leave.  But who's been better since switching teams?  None of the more offensive forwards -- Shinkaruk, Carcone, Grenier -- have scored at a higher rate on other AHL teams.  Palmu was only in Utica for two months.  Cull can't possibly be so destructive that 60 days with him ruins your career.  Palmu has had plenty of time to "recover" with his old team, yet he hasn't made any advances compared to last year.

Getting high end talent has much more to do with drafting than developing.  You can't spend a second round pick on an Alexandre Mallet then expect your farm team to give you back a Nikita Kucherov.

Canucks draftees who have been sent to Utica prior to this season:

Forwards: Alex Friesen, Nicklas Jensen, Alex Grenier, Joe Labate, Ludwig Blomstrand, Brendan Gaunce, Alex Mallet, Hunter Shinkaruk, Cole Cassels, Jake Virtanen.

Defensemen: Yann Sauve, Peter Andersson, Adam Polasek, Henrik Tommernes, Frankie Corrado, Anton Cederholm, Jordan Subban, Guillaume Brisebois, Ben Hutton (4 games).

What superstars could anyone possibly expect from this bunch?

The last time that the Comets won a game in regulation was 17 games ago on February 13th.  The futility streak continues.

I was tracking the Comets from BC and it's too bad they may have fallen out of playoff contention (I hope not).  They seem to have great fans and I bet the Aud would be a fun place to watch the Comets play.  I hope that Kole Lind and Jonah Gadjovich improve and that  Mike Dipietro comes in and plays well.  Brisebois and Sautner should continue to improve for the Comets.  Anyway, I'm thinking that Utica will have a better team next year.  Hopefully, the injury bug doesn't bite us again.
