[Discussion] Panarin

Pettersson hadn’t yet proved himeself when JT was making his decision. We were still expected to be a terrible team this year. It never made sense for him to choose Vancouver last July.

However, like some people have said it does makes some sense now with our young core and some good prospects. But we still may be 2-3 years from being a top destination for UFAs though. That’s assuming our prospects pan out and Pettersson, Boeser and Horvat continue to improve.

The Canucks can afford to pay one outside star over the next few years that enters free agency.  Not sure Panarin is the right one given the type of overpayment these guys get...or if the timing is right.  He has proven durable and productive, and he’s one of the few wingers that actually drives the play.  Which is going to cost someone close to 10 x 7.  Rather spend 2 more and take a stab at EK if he’s available.  Or pay a little less and go after Stone...Probably best just stay pat and add later once we have a clearer indication at what Boeser and EP will cost.

You never know Vancouver might be on Karlsson’s short leash. Swedish guys love Swedish influence. At the all star game Pettersson said he was excited to mingle with the other great Swedes also at the game. Maybe if Karlsson feels the same he might like the idea of playing on an up and coming team on the bubble with the best young Swede in the game.

Just sayin'. I couldn't even convince him to sign on NHL 19. It's a sign. :P

In all seriousness. The Canucks might very well submit an offer, but the guy wants to play in a major US city or a destination city in the states.

Panarin and Karlsson would instantly make us a meaningful team.  If they can find a way to make it work salary capwise, this would team would be fun to watch.

What has been missing, imho, is another creative, passing player.  Petersson brings that, but Horvat is more of a shooter.  Panarin with Horvat would give us a great 1-2 punch on both the 1st and 2nd lines.  This is absolutely necessary to generating real offence.  Our PP would be great.

Panarin Horvat Virtanen/Goldobin

Pearson Petersson Boeser

Rousel  Gaudette Eriksson

Leivo Beagle Motte

Trade Sutter and Goldobin.  Let Granlund walk or be traded.  Baertschi is a question mark.  Schaller and Spooner can be waived and wait in the AHL.

Edler Karlsson

Hutton Tanev

Hughes Stecher

Juolevi/Sautner/Brisebois Biega

Trade Pouliot or just let him go.  Tryamkin's rights should be traded for a strong RHD prospect if he has value.  Maybe Jett Woo could take Tanev's place after next year.

We will draft in the top10 and add another great prospect to the pool.

What is missing is a #1 defenceman and, while Hughes could be that, he won't be for a couple of years.  Who better to learn from and mentor under than EK.  The options of EK, Edler, and Hughes for the PP would be pretty sweet.

At the end of the day this is a business and winning is the business.  I think the team is hard working, has a great attitude and is just a little short of some high end talent.  Markstrom's quality this year is the main reason we might go this way.  With great goaltending and the lineup above we could be in a great position.

Just now, Jimmy McGill said:

how about offering CBJ one of our three 6th round picks for the rights to Panarin, that turns into a 3rd if he signs, once the season is over? we can go full-Tavares-pitch on him.

I'd like to have a free run at him for sure, so I'd give up a 6th for it.

And have Petey talk to him too.  Having Petey must be a lure to other guys, especially top line wingers who would get to play with him, right?

who else has the cap space and can offer line mates of Petey and Brock's quality? not many. that line would be insane.
