Simple answer to this is that thr drafting low character guys that are more concerned about individual success and demand to be paid for it. The Toronto media drives thr egos even higher only to make it worse.

This. I've said it before but Benning's high emphasis on character will end up paying off.

But, but. Overpaid? Says who? The media all applauded the deals. JT was a hometown discount, AM was a bargain and so was Nylander.

The TO media are puppets of the MLSE propaganda machine.  They sadly have to be that way, or they don't get any access to players, coaches, insider stuff the fans gobble up.  As the current team (again) falls into the abyss, only then will the fans accept the truth, and the reporters will then print it.  The paper bags will be coming out soon enough, and we will all LAUGH at the LOSER LEAFS!!!

The only reasons why this is even a question at this point is due to Toronto media making a big deal of things along with actually having players that deserve such high contracts. It just goes to show people can't have nice things.

Partly.  The players in TO with the high contracts need to play harder minutes, because those big contracts mean the team can't afford mid level players to play the hard minutes.  As a result, guys like Marner and JT are expected to play PK and take hard D zone starts.  AM and WM have too much east west in their games.  It's hard to play the game the right way - north south.  It takes away from offensive chances, but is way better for defensive positioning, especially when the puck is turned over.

Look how great McDavid and Draisatl are!  Those two are clearly two of the best offensive forwards in the NHL.  However, they are playing over 26 minutes a lot of the games.  Their high cap costs mean the team must have guys making less than 2 million to fill out the roster.  It means the top cap consuming players have to play extra, and harder minutes.  It means those top guys can't play north south as much, because that's way to tiring and takes away from what they are paid to do, which is score.  The TO big 4 are overpaid, because it clearly takes away from the rest of the roster.  They don't have the proper balance, which allows those east-west players to play that way.

So true. Everyday I hear a quote from an Eastern media type that makes me giggle. Today for instance I heard the Leafs are struggling due to being a young team, lol. Seems a lot of other younger teams are fine, ahem, Canucks.

what the past 1 year has clearly shown to nhl fans

is that top notch nhl talent require a premium in contract value to play for the leafs

this problem, which appears to be on par with what many players require to play for the oilers and jets, is puzzling

the centre of the universe is not able to attract quality talent at fair market value contracts

is the city that awful to live in?

are the fan there that intolerable?

is mike babcock that demanding of a coach?

is the past half century performance of that franchise that big of a stain?

so many quality nhl players are born and raised in ontario

and one would think they'd be happy to return "home" to play for the leafs

but this really does not appear to be the case

despite my comment above, even mcdavid reportedly refused a higher value contract from the oilers

and insisted on a team friendly aav of 12.5 million

we hear none of this coming from the better leaf players

looking for answers here

our local team is able to sign good players at team sensible value contracts

leafs are not

please explain

I think the leafs overvalued their players and hand out contracts to reflect that.

They need to pay their players the most because it reinforces the narrative that they have the most expensive players so they are the best
