This is the post 2011 Gillis era for you. No drafting and development because of poor picks, and the roster was filled with "vet" players.

At least that team made the playoffs consistently. Instead of rebuilding Benning just traded away and downgraded more picks, made horrible signings, and gave us one last middle finger with OEL and Garland.

When Allvin took over he was in a much more difficult spot as the team was more ready for a compete window.

Benning had a good defensive defenseman, two young goalies and a centre to work with. Not a lot but by selling vets, wealonizing cap space, and drafting high that can be filled. The Kesler trade was pretty good (although he could have acquired Theodore over Sbisa) but he drafted what should have been our 2nd line centre.

Ehlers was the BPA - top line left wing.

Next we drafted Boeser and in the 2016 draft we had DeBrincat at 13. If we took Tkachuk (BPA) we would have already had built out a pretty good forward lineup:

Tkachuk Horvat Boeser

Ehlers McCann DeBrincat

Benning just did way too much without really any direction and made horrific short term trades and signings. If he just left things alone and picked the BPA our team would have been good much sooner in most likely.

Gillis moved assets for trades that made sense at the time - the one that hurt was Keith Ballard but we weren’t guaranteed to

land Hamhuis - Grabner got waived and the draft pick became Quinton Howden so Florida lost the trade as well.

So looking at the last what should the focus be?

Cap flexibility and acquiring more picks and young players while building around the core.

EP, Hughes, Demko are a fantastic trio to build around. Bringing back Kuzmenko and our first line is set.

Trade Horvat for Carlo (if we can) and that top pairing is set. Ideally snatch a pick and or prospect as well. If we can retain 30-50% on Myers and take back Reilly as well that is a win-win add on.

Trade Miller for a younger 2nd line centre (Fabbri, Strome) and get a pick and some cap space.

Boeser and Garland are not really the problem or solution, but we should not let either go while their value is zero.

No, the post 2011 Gillis era rosters lacked young player development. It was a vet heavy team that was focused on the short term, so yes, we did have wins. You can see that once the Sedins were closer to retirement, the team really started to fall apart. Gillis had zero ideas on how to construct his own team. Drafting and development was not on his mind at all, which was why his draft picks were complete misses most of the time. The missing prospects from this era is still a consequence today.
