[Proposal] NYI - VAN (Partner for Hughes)

Recommended Posts

Presuming clauses are waived
Vancouver trades: JT Miller (6'1", 218 lb. $8m hit starting next year until 2029-30; could retain some to sweeten the deal)
Islanders trade: Ryan Pulock (6'2", 215 lb. RHD, $6.15m until 2029-30)

Why NYI does this:
- Get Barzal his scoring winger (Miller is 3rd on the team in goals with 18, and the Isles are stacked up the middle that adding a winger like J.T. makes more sense than getting Horvat)
With Barzal Struggling, Islanders Need Lamoriello To Take Action Now - New York Islanders Hockey Now (nyihockeynow.com) => they were using Clutterbuck and Cizikas, among others as Barzal's linemates.  J.T. may struggle with defense but no such issues with scoring (same can't be same for Boeser), and the Islanders are desperate for scoring
- Though Dobson is out, Mayfield has been playing pair #1 at even strength, and Dobson has scored all the PP points for defensemen on the Islanders (Pulock doesn't have any PP points, and no points in 10 despite being on unit 1) => $6.15 million is expensive for an all-round workhorse who isn't the top choice on either EV or PP (Mayfield is the RD on PK1, and he's a pending UFA so may be able to re-sign him for cheaper than what Pulock gets since Mayfield only currently makes $1.45m)
- They would be trading from a position of strength (RHD), and they don't have enough players coming out of their 20s to make this trade work (besides Beauvillier and maybe Wahlstrom, no one else really fits the description of what Rutherford said he's looking for)

Why VAN does this:
- Can get rid of potential headache from locker room (skill aside, there's the possibility that J.T. and Tocchet can butt heads and he may want out)
- Get an RHD who would be far and away our best RHD option (he'd be a strong workhorse RD, and 0.3 points/ game is an off year for him; Myers, Bear, Schenn all aren't offensive, and Pulock would be a physically stronger option than Minors on the PK); his career high is 37 points and he's off from that pace, but he's still solid defensively (still +7); we have the offensive depth up front to overcome losing Miller, if that means solidifying things in our own end
- With that term and relatively youngish age, he would be a long-term partner for Hughes, even if he doesn't score that much
- In a cap-strapped league where it's pretty much a dollar in for dollar out, we would trade a star scorer who's possibly a bad fit here (compared to Tocchet who runs more of a defensive scheme where Pulock could help shut things down, Lane Lambert is known for a more aggressive offensive system that could allow Miller to flourish next to Barzal) to find a long-term solution for a major roster hole.

I've proposed Miller to Long Island in the past and I think there's a fit. That being said, I don't believe Pulock would waive for Vancouver.

He was drafted by the Isles and the Isles are two seasons removed from taking Tampa to the brink the semi-finals series 3-4. The season prior they'd actually made the conference final.

Vancouver is, well, a mess.

I reckon any Miller trade to the Isles would probably involve Bailey coming back.

Would love to trade a winger for a RHD

NYI already trying to do that to no avail.  Lamoriello in his off-season presser talked of how they'd like to move one of their Fs to improve their D-corps.  They've only been able to get Romanov and still have a need for Ds.  Mayfield is also UFA.

Lamoriello labels NYI a defence 1st team btw and says he's not going to sacrifice defence for offence.

Like this but, Pulock has an NTC, which I don't see him lifting to come to Vancouver.

Something's gotta give though, they were supposed to be a playoff team after an off year, but now they're 24th in goals for per game (ahead of defensive Nashville, struggling Ottawa and Philly and the rebuilding teams), and 30th in PP%, only ahead of lowly Columbus and Montreal.  They're winless in their last 6, 1-9 in their last 10 with only 1 game where they scored more than 2 goals, and 6/10 they only scored 1.  Barzal has 1 point in his last 9 games.  Sure, Lee and Nelson continue to do their thing but defense-first and relying on one line only gets a team so far when the writing is on the wall that they can't buy a goal to help out their goalie who's keeping them in it (their only injuries at the moment are Clutterbuck who's a banger, and Wahlstrom who might be the solution even though he's only had 7 goals and 16 points all season, so it's not like they're the Avs, waiting for a scoring surge due an imminent returning player).

Have said this would be great for a while because Dobson is stealing all the RD minutes there but they'd need some sort of D going back so we'd likely have to give Schenn too. Maybe they give us a lowly 4C back or a pick to even things up.

Cap-wise it works for now but they have about 5M in extensions kick in next year and not much cap off the books so we might have to take Cizikas 2.5M long contract.

Miller + Schenn for Pulock + Cizikas

Yes please.

I know we're no better cap wise and may still lose Bo but there's a 3C and top RD right there.
