[Proposal] CAR - VAN Blockbuster

I dig it.

Kind of a deal that mixes rebuild/retool as most pieces coming back are young and ready or damn near close to ready.

Cap space can be used to take advantage of cap stricken teams to maybe get a solid pick(like Monahan for a 1st and/or player(like Pacorietty trade) or you to find pieces of the puzzle as it will take more than one off-season to build the roster we want. In the meantime we’d have developing players on the roster and probably a top 10 pick in 2024.

All these young players + potentially four 1sts( if you pull a Monahan move) with two of the picks being high(our own) would give us great potential to build a long-term contender.

After two years the prospect pool is built, plus the influx of cap rising while we’re clearing some, we could be ready to add multiple serious pieces via trade or free agency with two top 10 picks(prospects) knocking on the door.

Would be a true rebuild on the fly.

There's definitely a fit with Carolina. We have pieces they need and they're all in this year so before the trade deadline comes to pass, there's a good chance we will transact with the Canes sending one of our forwards out East. A trade like the one you're suggesting is a blockbuster which pretty much never happens midseason, but I can see us sending them Horvat or Miller, especially if we take back one of their contracts (like KK for example). If anybody can get the most out of Miller it'd be Rod the Bod. But it's more likely going to be one of Horvat/Boeser/Garland considering this management group committed to Miller and Kuz.

Carolina's management has been clear that they are very careful about long term contracts with players well into their 30s. Can't imagine that Miller would be of interest to them. They might be willing to make an exception for Horvat, but probably not Miller. @mll would probably have the quotes. Carolina makes sense for Horvat and/or Boeser though.

A Miller trade at this point would be beyond shocking. Maybe the Islanders would do it if Lou can get him for cheap and shed some cap, they are also starved for offense. Maybe Florida if we took back Bobrovsky's full contract. Possibly Pittsburgh in the offseason if they can make enough room. That's not very many teams and I doubt any of them would do it anyways.

Lots of pressure on Lou Lam to make a deal.  Could see him coveting Miller.  Carolina would love Bo.  But, IMHAO, even if the offeres for both were super, our owner wouldn’t sign off.  He will instruct management to sign Bo and not trade Miller.

Oh we've all seen the quotes  NUMEROUS times

Fact is, fence sitters don't win cups. Adding Horvat and Miller would make them absolute cup favourites IMO. And likely keep them there the next few years.

Like it or not, now is there window to win if they're going to go for it. Pretty soon Slavin, Pesce, Necas, Jarvis and Aho are going to need raises and seriously test their cap management and willingness to hold to their aging curves philosophy anyway (and either route likely leads to the beginning of the end anyway). The meat of their window is very much now, and the next couple years.

And Miller is the reason we take Kotkaniemi and his under performing, and risky term, back.

Like I said right off the bat though, this is likely fantasy as deals like this just don't happen anymore. But IMO the basic structure is solid.

Aho is UFA in a year - ie they might have only 2 tries left with him.  Skjei and Pesce too.  Slavin a year after.  They have one of the best D-corps in the league with Burns still playing at a high level.

If they want to win with this group it's pretty much this year.  They also have 3 goalies - the Andersen injury hurt them last playoffs.

When asked by Marek, Waddell didn't project to spend much at the TDL with LeBrun saying that Pacioretty was going to be considered as their own rental TDL add.  He's now no longer available though.

Skjei, Pesce and Slavin are going to be in their late 20s and who knows if they can get extensions done + there's Aho.  Their approach on contracts for players in their late 20s is about to be tested.  It's also a cap issue where they are on bargain deals and the Sinclair bankruptcy news (Carolina is even directly affected) could also limit what they'll be able to do if the cap doesn't increase as much as initially projected.

They already made clear to Vancouver that Necas is off limits per LeBrun.  Carolina could well be entering a re-tool and losing Necas would set them back too much. Not convinced that Horvat would want to extend there before knowing whether they can hold their team together.

They should still go after him even if he's only a rental for that same reason.

Miller has to be taken out of the equation to have a chance to make a deal with them though.  Really can't see them wanting him - age/term of his contract + doesn't really seem to have the endurance or attitude to play their fast paced checking game.

You sound like an 80's sitcom with the same dated lines. Why don't you stop being such a puppet and try out some new lines.

Doubt they’d be interested in Miller. He doesn’t really fit what Brind’amour is looking for in a player.

Not sure that's true. But for those that don't like Miller as an option, I wonder if Carolina would like Bo + Garland instead?

Fits their competitive window better. But I'm not in likely taking back Kotkaniemi then (or at least not without added value elsewhere).

Have to think if they offer to extend Horvat, it would signal that they intend to bend their aging curve "rules", keep the band together, and continue to go for it. Otherwise why extend him if they're going in to a retool in the next couple years (which I personally think is dumb as they could be competitive for the next 5+ years easily)?
