Mathew and Brady beat the crap out of each other all the time.   The world you're growing up in, is not the same as competitive sports.   Do you think the Hughes brothers never had a go?

I'm sayng it shouldn't be encouraged.

you should go punch your best friend in the face over a children's game and see how it goes.

They are not playing tiddlywinks or marbles though tas. They are getting paid $7,000,000 a year to contest a game in the best/toughest men’s hockey league on the planet. Act like pros, not kids playing road hockey.

The biggest task Hughes and the leadership group have is to bring the room back together. We all heard the rumours under Bo that the room was divided and “clique-y”.

Good teams have a close knit group of players that bond on and off the ice. Everyone has to feel included and that they are an important part of the team. It’s up to him to organize team dinners and functions. That’s how you build a winning team off the ice.

If there’s one thing Henrik can tell him it’s that. Apparently the Sedins were very good at making sure every guy on the team was included, especially the young guys. You can’t get the buy in you need if certain guys feel like outsiders on their team. You need all 23 guys pulling together on the rope to win.

If there's a rift it didn't just resolve itself with Bo leaving.

Not my opinion and not trying to spread gossip, but have read the real issues are between JTM and EP.

didnt just smile.  his team was literally in a battle with the other team, and he was playing pattycake with Tkachuk like nothing was happening.

Guys smile and laugh all the time.

I've seen cage fighters stop for a chuckle, high five, and even hug each other...in the middle of the fight! They still battle on until one is usually unconscious. Some of the top fighters on the planet. There is no correlation with angry fighters being better/wanting it more than happy or nice guys.

Nobody should question Quinn's compete level, seriousness, or professionalism.

He is a driven superstar and has a great head on his shoulders.

we shouldn't be encouraging pro athletes to bash each other's brains outs. the q finally got smart and banned fighting, the rest of the leagues won't be far behind.

Any proof of this?

i'll see if i can link to anything. Again, i'm not saying its definitive or anything above speculation, but there has been a lot of chatter about that and that Bo as captain was ineffective in building a solid bridge between the two.

I think people are forgetting that hockey players are human beings, with all the flaws that go along with that. I’ve learned not to judge anyone based on my limited knowledge of them. Nobody here knows what really goes on in these players lives and in the room, and some of the speculation feels off base.

A good winning season is what this team, and us fans, really need!

Can appreciate that.   Meatheads like Grimson and Parros have law degrees.  Most enforcers, including Probert, were gentle giants.  Same with McGratton.  All they wanted, was to keep their mates safe.   From guys like MT and Matt Cooke.   Tochett was one of those guys too, except he had mad skills too (sure ventilated Martin Broduer and others).   Wouldn't worry, in 20 years you probably will look back and understand.   In 10 years all fighting will be banned, and our uniforms will be covered in adds.   And you too, will miss the "good old days" with Myers and Luke Schenn, who 20 years ago weren't even average joes physically.

Nope.  Good point.   I would have been fine with either.   The thing I like about QHs the most, is he could be around a very long time.   And hope he is.

I wonder if naming him captain is also a carrot to help keep him here, in case he thinks playing with his brothers is worth investigating

Elias Pettersson on J.T. Miller: 'We’ve had our differences…'

"...but he’s a teammate that I respect."

is-elias-pettersson-happy-in-vancouver_-_-32-thoughts Vancouver Canucks centre Elias Pettersson relaxes on the beach in Florida while talking to Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek for the 32 Thoughts podcast.Sportsnet

It was a busy All-Star break for Elias Pettersson, as he represented the Vancouver Canucks at the Skills Competition, winning the Hardest Shot event, then scored three goals — two that counted — for the Pacific Division in the All-Star Game.

Even when he got a chance to relax on the beach, Pettersson couldn’t find a moment’s rest, as he was interviewed by Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek for Sportsnet’s “32 Thoughts” podcast.

Recommended reads for you:

During the interview, Friedman brought up J.T. Miller and whether he and Pettersson have a good relationship.

“It’s good,” said Pettersson. “I mean, we’ve had our differences, maybe in some games, but he’s a teammate that I respect. He’s someone I like to play hockey with. There’s a lot of speculation, obviously — a lot — but he’s a teammate I respect…It’s not an issue.”

Asked to describe Miller, Pettersson said, “He wants to win so bad and sometimes he maybe gets too hotheaded, if that’s the right word. He cares a lot and just wants to win.”

Teammates don't have to be friends

The reality is that not every player on a team is going to be best of friends. They are essentially just coworkers, albeit coworkers in a very unusually close environment. Miller and Pettersson obviously have very different personalities and interests away from the rink, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be good teammates. Ryan Kesler and the Sedins could not have been more different, for example, but they were part of the best team in Canucks history.

When a team is losing, those differences in personality and interests can become wedges. Players start to wonder if the team would be performing better if another player cared more — measuring that “caring” in public displays of emotion — or if another player spent more time working on their game instead of indulging in various hobbies.

Winning is like spackle, smoothing over all sorts of gaps. Sometimes it’s a question of which came first: the losing or the disjointed locker room.

In any case, Pettersson made it clear that he has no issue with Miller and respects him as a teammate. That’s all that is necessary.

"I play video games almost every day."

Pettersson’s time away from the rink is often spent playing video games, which some of the other players on the team like Miller might not get, but isn’t a bad thing.

“I’m a very easy person,” said Pettersson. “I play video games almost every day with my friends back home…We play NHL — like ‘Chel, we play 3-on-3 or sometimes 5-vs-5 — and also I play Call of Duty with my friends back home.”

Pettersson said that in NHL he plays defence — “Otherwise, there’s a lot of goals” — and that his friends are “okay” but he always has a good time playing with them.

Some Canucks fans have worried that with all of the tumult in Vancouver that Pettersson might not want to stay long term, but Pettersson was quick to say that he loves Vancouver.

“I’m happy. I mean, I love the city, it’s a great place to play,” said Pettersson. “Obviously, the Canucks fans are passionate, which I like, so yeah, I’m happy.”

Assuming Pettersson is here long-term, there’s a lot of thought that he could be the next captain of the Canucks — Horvat cast his vote for him, after all — but Pettersson is in no rush to step into that role.

“They want me to have more of a leadership role and I’m very happy to hear that,” said Pettersson. “But, for me, I don’t want to stress into anything because it’s not the easiest task to be the captain. I saw Bo firsthand get all those questions after every practice almost.”

Pettersson clarified that he wants to make the right decision about the captaincy, so it’s unlikely something that happens in a hurry.

"I want to play in the Olympics."

When asked who on the Canucks doesn’t get enough attention, he jokingly said, “Me,” then chuckled before saying that he would have said Horvat before he got traded.

“I think [Luke] Schenn. Now he’s the all-time leader in hits,” said Pettersson — Schenn leads all defencemen in hits since the statistic has been measured. “He’s a veteran but he comes with excitement, working hard every day. He’s a great leader in the room and always brings it.”

One of Pettersson’s answers might cause some controversy but it really shouldn’t. When asked to rank potential accomplishments — Stanley Cup, Olympic gold, World Cup, World Championships — Pettersson ranked the Olympics first.

“I’ll say Olympics first because it’s been going on for years, there’s so much history,” said Pettersson. “I want to play in the Olympics, it’s such a big event. And then I’ll say Stanley Cup after.”

"I wasted a bunch of money."

Finally, Friedman asked about Pettersson’s fashion sense, which has taken a turn towards the casual from his more fashion-forward looks in the past.

“I’m pretty casual, I like oversized and vintage. Simple stuff,” said Pettersson. “When I moved over, I was all about, ‘I need to buy all the expensive clothes,’ because I thought I was cool when I was doing that. But year two, I realized I grew out of everything…so I wasted a bunch of money on that.

“After that, I just started buying cheap clothes.”

Don't think so.   It was always down to him or Miller.   Tavares left.  Others have left.  If he wants to go to NJ, he will.   Best the team can do, is try and win.   That's likely the only thing, or NJ simply having no room for him, that will stop him from going.   My bet is he sticks around if things are going well, if not, he will go somewhere else where a fatter paycheque exists.

...And a lot of fighters unfortunately have a bunch of problems, depression, addiction, CTE etc.. we have lost some beautiful souls to suicide.

This is well documented as I am sure you know.

I love fighting. Have been into it my whole life....I'm a shodan.

We are lucky to live in these times but they will go the way of the dodo, as you say, and you are also right about the logos one day.

But this poster is also right and I think he understands things just fine.

I still think Miller was by far the best choice. Is he moody? Sure...he can be. Has been. Do you want a guy who is passionate/all in and wears his heart on his sleeve? Doesn't give a sh...ishkabob what people think? Is all about this team and wants to win so badly that, at times, it catches up with him? He's human.

The only thing that worries me about Quinn is that he's a "brother" to others. Can't have that...when you hit the ice it's all about friends becoming foes. We want a team that takes no prisoners. Tkachucks need face fulls of glove...this is a war not a party.

377456243_10160501930060549_968276308948

Will support him 100% in the role of captain moving forward. But no more nice guys...they finish last.

All the grumpy bear stuff about Miller was precisely why I think he'd make a good captain. Gruff and snarly. Huggy Bear just worries me in that regard. The easy to play against stuff that we need to change.

Like them or not the Tkachuk's and Hughes"s all grew up together and are all good friends, I've heard they all have a no fighting amongst themselves agreement.

cagefighters get paid peanuts in comparison and arent the most clever athletes.  its also not a team game.

If i was battling the other team in a scrum, hard along with 3 of my other teammates, and 1 of them was playing pattycake with a guy from their team, id be beyond pissed.

anyone who has played team sports would understand that.

Just now, Dr. Crossbar said:

Just because Quinn Hughes has brothers, doesn't mean it's his #1 priority to play with them. I'm sure if the opportunity arises down the road, he'd like to explore it, and likes the idea, but ... just because he has brothers doesn't mean he's bolting for NJ.

But that’ll be the narrative for the next 4 years.  I just let it go and see what happens. I bet he re-signs in Van myself
