goalie13
A) Who cares I remember this board getting up in arms when Tyler Spurgeon wore #66 in a pre-season game a few years back
Jai604
Who cares? ANd yes, I agree that it's ridiculous #99 was retired league-wide in the NHL.

FullMetalOilDrum
And we care BECAUSE? This is the NHL, not the KHL. Is this actually worth starting a thread over?

Horny Manatee
I am schocked to see these responses on CDC. I agree with all of you. Who cares.
TVank15
Why would anyone care? Different league, different continent, never had Gretzky play in it. The list is endless on reasons why this is a non-issue.
Madness
meh who cares. I don't see it as a big deal.

Dittohead
I don't think Gretzky owns the number 99 so who cares. lots of people wear 99 in duffer hockey like the KHL.
Bang Bang Boogie
I wore 99 once for one of my teams in beer league. Do you guys care?
roland
I see #99 as a symbol of being a great hockey player and Backstrom isn't one of them.
MoneypuckOverlord
different situation if Crosby wore 99 in the KHL. Gauranteed. They will use whatever tactic to slam him.
uber_pwnzor
He's gonna switch to a number that starts with sixty... 66, anyone?
Master Mind
Obviously not an issue. What if the KHL retired a number league wide, we wouldn't be telling any NHLers that they can't wear that number.
grandmaster
It's kind of classless. He knows what that number represents. I would laugh if this guy thinks he is now the best hockey player of all time I feel the same way about Mario's 66. Only Lemieux was talented enough to reach Gretzky's records (a shame about his injuries).
Phil_314
You know what the REAL outrage is? The very fact that this Nick Backstrom crosses over to North America the very season AFTER the Wild's NIK Backstrom comes over! Way to confuse the League's fans, NICK! (by virtue that Nik came over first, you're to blame, Backstrom #2 --> in fact, due to this being your second strike, I shall henceforth refer to the "center Backstrom" (a.k.a. "Nicklas") as Nick Copycat-strom.) with topics like these, sure hope the lockout ends soon!
etsen3
I don't care, but he will probably get chirped a lot, at least by North American players.
Squeak
Vancouver still has #99 as playable, as we are still waiting for Gretzky to make his way from Edmonton.
c00kies
#99 is retired league wide in the NHL.
