[Signing] Tanev Re-signed

If you take out two of pretty much any teams top 4 like that they are going to look very similar. I'm sure MG had a reason for not getting this signing done sooner. Whether it was because he wanted to get a fair deal, which is especially important with how low the cap is this year, or because he was spending timing chasing around UFAs, regardless, I assume he had a good reason.

Good work by MG today..... By the looks of it the reason why getting Tanev done took so long was because the two sides couldn't agree on term. Canucks probably wanted longer (3-4 yrs) and Chris wanted shorter (1-2 yrs) so they both agreed to let him play this year and if he plays well he will be rewarded next year.

Great move by gillis and good for tanev.

like i said before, he probably wanted a four year 1.5. 2. 2.5, 3 (which is likely a bit high), and gillis wanted a lower cap hit for this year and lower overall numbers.

likely said, "chris take a year at the 1.5 you want, we'll see how it goes and next year when we have more cap space we can look at a longer term"

fair for both sides. soo glad to have this kid back, ya hes a 5/6 right now, but he's the only damn defenceman other than hammer than seems to be able to handle a 2 man forecheck and make a good first pass...that is HUGE in hockey...he is much better than many on here give him credit for.

ya he's not an offensive guy but he's one heck of a defensive defensman that can handle a hard forecheck and get the puck up ice.

great signing

Tanev is clearly the more NHL ready prospect (if we can still call him that), offering poise and the ability for the coach to play him in most any situation. Odd's are he got the bigger payday for this. And perhaps having played the European card where he probably could have gotten a good payday in comparison to this years reduced cap NHL.

But lets not confuse that he has the upside which guys like Smith can offer?

so with these two signings today, i began to look at our d depth chart, and wondered where yannik weber would fit in. i realized i knew very little about him other than his offensive ability, so i did some research and asked some educated habs fans.

their response was that he could easily be an extremely solid d-man on the 3rd pair, and despite his small frame, that his hockey sense overcomes the size miss match. they also felt that he did not get a fair shake as the habs were lacking in the size department throughout their roster, and that the return of markov along with subbans emergence sort of made webbers stregnths redundant in their lineup. they also mentioned that he has very good poise for a 24 year old, mentioning his strong pinching ability, and thought that he still had another level or two of potential to reach.

just some food for thought, but i too think hell get a much better chance at success in vancouver. itll be nice to once again have a right handed bomb since salos departure.

heres a clip where i could totally see the twins finding him.

Yeah, I think Weber has the potential to surprise people.

For one thing, he's not nearly as small as some people think. He's 5'11" and there's no getting around his height but he's also 200lbs so he's pretty solid (quite similar to Keith Ballard in size).

He's also a lot more positionally sound than many Canucks fans seem to think. He does wander the ice a lot but his skating is quite strong and he tracks the play well so he's usually able to recover and doesn't get caught up the ice as often as some might think

His poise and hockey sense have been praised since he was a junior and continue to be seen as strengths in his game.

He's also the closest thing the Canucks have to a true puck rushing defenseman.

For years, his coaches have compared him to Brian Campbell (in his prime with Chicago) and I think this actually fits rather well with Weber's top end potential.

I think there's a real possibility that, if Weber can find the right chemistry with one of the Canucks' top left-hand-shooting Ds, he could very well secure a regular spot in the lineup and play a significant role for the Canucks this season. Personally, I hope he gets a chance to partner with Jason Garrison. Garrison played very well with Campbell in Florida and, while Weber isn't Campbell, they have a lot of similarities (which at least suggests that Garrison might partner well with this type of player). Paired together, Garrison and Weber would provide two very dangerous point shots--especially on the power play--and could make things very difficult for defending opposition players. Garrison also plays a solid defensive game and could easily back-up and cover for Weber when he joins the rush or pinches deep to maintain possession and push offensive play.

Also, Garrison-Weber would allow Garrison to move back to his natural side on the left--where he's even better--as Weber is a right-handed shot and primarily an RHD.

Right now, Weber's penciled in as depth guy or a bottom pairing D who might bank extra minutes playing as a power play specialist. However, if he can manage to put together some solid games playing with one of the Canucks' top-four Ds, he might move up the lineup and could potentially become a 20+ minutes/game regular on this team.
