How did this turn into a John Madden discussion?

In any event, third line centres don't record 20 goal seasons for 5 straight years and in 6 of 7 years. Kesler might be a 3rd line centre on a great team, but he's a 2C on most NHL teams. The whole notion of numbering lines is overrated, anyway. Why not have 3 lines that can score?

Even Selke-calibre centres like Toews, Mike Richards and Bergeron need winger support. There's nothing wrong with that.

I could not agree more. The numbering system has always bugged me.

They had Arnott, Gomez and Holik all playing more minutes per game than him that season, so I guess you were right.

He played 4th line minutes.

Yeah, but the thing is, your comparison is off. The guy on that list that was most like Kesler is not Madden, it's Holik and when we were Cup contenders in 2011 the guy most like John Madden on our roster was Manny Malhotra.

Holik never had a 30g season (his career high was 29). Holik never hit 70pts either (career high 65). However, he was a two-way force which is not dissimilar to what Kesler is.

This turned into a John Madden thread when some smart ass decided to bring his name up as a selke winner and claiming he was playing third line minutes that year which he was not...

Jere Lehtinen won it 3 times as a RW. Madden could easily have been splitting time between center and wing.

Exactly what I was trying to say.

i'd say 15 and a half minutes per game would be third line minutes, no?

Madden was 7th amongst forwards (on his team) in even strength minutes in 2000-2001: link and 1st amongst forwards (on his team) in shorthanded minutes in the same year: link.

That means he was a 3rd liner at even strength and their go-to-guy on the PK, aka a defensive specialist.

except there were 6 forwards getting more mins than him..

It would've been 7 but Arnott was injured for 1/3 of the season. Arnott was averaging 13:04 of even strength (to Madden's 11:39). Anyways, the argument is over. Madden was a 3rd line defensive specialist that year and won the Selke because of it.

Let's get back to Bo Horvat talk and everyone just slam a green beer already!

So lets talk about Bo now? I'm predicting Ldn over the spitfires in 6 games, and Bo with 8 points in those 6 games.

Yes, back on track people. Horvat will be what he ends up being when he plays in the NHL. I'm looking forward to another playoffs from him where he ramps it up a notch and help carry the team on their path to the Memorial Cup.

I'm starting to find it easier to think Bo could end up playing out his last year of junior eligibility next season. I just don't know if there will be a spot for him to develope and flourish with the canucks next year. It seems to me the 3rd line will have more than enough options before we consider bringing in horvat. Plus, with his experience, Matthias would be a better fit as a 2nd line center if we don't bring in someone to fill that spot. Maybe he gets his 9 game look but i just don't see why you would bump one of the multiple bottom 6 options we already or why we would take the risk of pidgeon holing him into a top 6 role Bo may not be ready for.

3rd line LW with Matthias as C.
