  1. If there was a bigger deal, I'm sure that would have been executed on the day of the Leivo trade with Leivo/Carcone being pieces that were moved alongside others. It does show that Benning is working the phones. Word is that he's very active on the phones. Trades are tough. This deal fell into the Canucks lap because 1) It was either trade him or waive him from TO's perspective and 2) The Canucks clearly wanted Leivo and were willing to make a move as opposed to seeing if he'd get to them on waivers (which he wouldn't because of LA who claimed Leipsic and Scherbak and probably would've claimed Leivo too). I still think this is a good sign the Canucks and Leafs COULD make a deal near the TDL. We do have defensive pieces that the Leafs may covet (Gudbranson, Edler) so a deal isn''t an impossible thing to think about. Also, as a side note, I don't believe the Canucks will trade Tanev because they want him to play with Hughes next season and see if there's something there.
  2. He'll need waivers if he spends 30 days with the Canucks or if he plays 10 NHL games. Whatever comes first. I wish Evan was in Vancouver right now. God knows he's an upgrade on Del Zotto and Pouliot... and perhaps... Biega?
  3. I definitely think that's what happened. Reports from Pierre Lebrun of TSN say that the Leivo deal was made a few hours before its announcement. My gut says that they probably talked Leipsic and when he was claimed by LA, the Maple Leafs identified Carcone as a secondary option and Benning agreed to move him. Either way, I like Leivo and thought he played well last night. All you can ask for a guy like him who has dealt with a lot of adversity in the last two years as a Maple Leaf -- needlessly so, I may add.
  4. Honestly, I'm trying to make sense as to why Carcone was the guy in the Leivo deal and not somebody else. I am hoping that Jasek can return to his ways that he demonstrated at the end of last season. And I'm hoping Palmu can show why he won the Rookie of the Year award in the Finnish league last year too by getting a bigger opportunity. That said, I was listening to the Steve Dangle Podcast and apparently Carcone had moved himself up into the second spot of the callup list (I'm assuming Zack MacEwen is before him). There's a good chance only 1 of the 3 become NHLers but they're all young and have time to develop. It's just a good opportunity for them now considering how thin Utcia's depth is right now.
  5. You don't need to protect NTC's, you only have to protect NMC's. It's too early too tell with this team but the only players worth saving from this roster would be Horvat, Pettersson, and Boeser for sure. Maybe Stecher and/or Hutton depending on if they're still here by then. Baertschi too if he recovers from his concussion. Goalie situation could be interesting if we sign Bobrovsky as rumored. Would either mean we lose Bobrovsky ala Fleury with Vegas (assuming Demko is the backup) or we lose Demko (assuming we expose him and don't send a pick to Seattle to protect him). A little too early but best hope would be Seattle claims either Beagle or Eriksson from us.
  6. It should be fine. Carcone's departure will open the door for Petrus Palmu, Lukas Jasek, and Jonah Gadjovich -- all of whom have been carouselling with being healthy scratched because of the glut of "marginal" tweener NHL/AHL bodies in the lineup. Of the three, I expect Jasek will probably seize the opportunity but hopefully a bigger role for either Palmu or Gadjovich will get them out of there first half slump and awaken them as AHL players. A strong second half from those three will only bode well for them going forward. All three of Palmu, Jasek, and Gadjovich have higher NHL upside than Carcone anyways -- and I was/still am a big Carcone fan.
  7. Yeah, I think you're right. He'll probably sign in March 2020 and play a game or two. That'll be 3 years from when he was drafted. And then in the Fall of 2020, he'll probably make a run at a defense spot or get big minutes in Utica. Given how well College Defensemen have blossomed in the Canucks system, I wouldn't be shocked if he makes the jump from NCAA to NHL with us... we've done it before with Hutton, Stecher, Hughes (most likely)... so there is that. Even Tanev got into 29 games straight from the NCAA in the 2010-2011 season (when we made our cup run). I think the extra workout time really benefits defensemen in the NCAA system. But yeah, he's definitely a player and somebody who could be solid contributor in a few years time for the Canucks.
  8. I'm still in awe by how, despite only scoring 1 goal (and have 0 assists in his ENTIRE 2 AND A HALF SHL CAREER), he's still got a positive +/-. This season he scored 1 goal but sits at a 0 for his +/-. The last two years, he's been at +2/+2 respectively (despite not contributing anything offensively). Given the state of our defense, and him being 21 already (I believe he was an overager when drafted) I have to wonder if he's a sleeper candidate to get signed/make a case for himself next Fall at Training Camp. Something says his defensive prowess is exactly what the Canucks need. A total shutdown guy.
  9. Who would you rather the Canucks sign if they go after a big ticket free agent... Erik Karlsson or Sergei Bobrovsky? Mind you, you're only signing one of them. Seems like the media is hyping we'll go hard for one or the other. Karlsson for me would be better than Bobrovsky due to organizational need + my feeling Demko will still develop into something special. But Bobrovsky would solve our goalie woes for years much like Luongo did.

EK, because we could probably move other assets to trade for a goalie.

While I don't believe in spending big money on goaltending, I think we need a significant uptick in goaltending if we expect to be considered seriously. Demko is coming off a concussion and DiPietro might be years away. I would like Karlsson, but we do have Hughes coming in who should provide at least the offense side of what Karlsson brings at some point in his career hopefully. If we are bringing in Juolevi soon and other young dmen, it would be nice to have a good safety net behind them to hopefully cover up their rookie mistakes. Perhaps Bobrovsky also leads to Tryamkin making a return as well as an added bonus.

  10. This kid's got guts. I definitely think he'll sign an entry level deal with Vancouver after his season ends. Him and Hughes will both enter some games for us if Michigan doesn't end up in the Frozen Four. That being said... who is this 6'8" Russian skating around the NCAA ranks and is he any good hahaha?!?
  11. He's been playing in the bottom six. Minutes on ice aren't very high. And he's been shuffled in and out of the lineup alongside Kole Lind, Jonah Gadjovich, and Lukas Jasek as Trent Cull gets used to playing "the young guys". So he hasn't even had much consistency with who and when and where he is playing. I expect he'll pick it up in the later half of the season but he's probably in for at least another year after this one in the AHL before he gets a sniff at the NHL level. He's still doing well considering he was a 6th round pick. I still think he has NHL upside.
  12. A couple of things -- -A year ago Tryamkin's agent said that "KHL contracts are made to be broken" -This sudden fall from grace for Tryamkin bodes well for the Canucks bringing Tryamkin back. -KHL season ends by March. I feel like Tryamkin's style is better for the NHL. I feel like he gets exposed more in bigger ice surfaces thanks to his size. He's fast for a guy his size. I feel a return is inevitable. Also, for Tryamkin, next season seems like a good fit for his return. There'll be roster spots open on defense (Del Zotto, Edler gone for sure, Hutton, Pouliot could be gone too, at least one, if not both). Sure, Hughes and a UFA like Tyler Myers might take spots but... it makes me wonder... If Benning got word from Tryamkin's camp that he'd be willing to make his Canucks return in March, would that give Benning the courage to deal both Edler and Tanev? Or at least trade Edler by the deadline?
  13. Was a little disappointed to see Darren Archibald get the call before Zack MacEwen with Boeser being injured. That being said, Zack's gotta be the next guy who gets called up if another long term injury hits the lineup. Really feel like the Canucks have found a diamond in the rough with this kid.
  14. He had a shoulder injury last year and in the spring the Organization thought he would need until December to recovery. Luckily, Brassard recovered quickly and is already playing. We are at 46 contracts. I suspect Brassard will be signed in the spring. The defensive depth in our prospect pool is a little weak and he can capitalize on it by signing this spring if he continues his good play. He really does look like a 7th round steal. Even if he doesn't become an everyday NHLer, and only slots into a few games as a replacement guy, that's still a huge win for the organization.
  15. Carcone hasn't played a single AHL game this year and he was sent to the AHL without playing a single NHL preseason game this year. What's going on with him? Is he injured? Rehab? How does a guy with two years AHL experience not even get into an AHL game yet?
  16. Ryan Johnson was on Sportsnet 650 saying how he wants to shelter the young kids (Gadjovich, Lind, Palmu, Jasek) because having a line of 19/20/21 year olds in the AHL is a recipe for disaster, according to him. But it is a little concerning. Gadjovich should be playing and he hasn't played yet. Palmu and Jasek are a little older than Lind/Gadjovich so they're going to get into the lineup before those two most likely. There are two options for Gadjovich if he can't crack the Comets roster. 1 -- He goes down to Kalamazoo and plays top line minutes or 2 -- He goes back to the OHL for his overage season. Gadjovich's contract slides if he goes back, if I'm not mistaken. Lind's doesn't. The lineup in Utica should thin out in a week or two when the ECHL season starts up and guys are sent down. Though it's not ideal, I feel like spending time in Kalamzoo playing against men will be better for Jonah over another year in the OHL. Hopefully by midseason, in this scenario, Gadjovich can make the Utica lineup because of injuries/callups/experience.
  17. I honestly think the Canucks hope that Jett Woo becomes that partner. They drafted Jett Woo high in the second round probably for that reason (among others). That, or, and I know this topic is beaten down like a dead horse, but a mature Tryamkin could be an interesting defensive partner for him if he returns in the next year or two. That said, if the Canucks fall out of the top 3 (again) this coming draft, picking a guy like Bowen Byram could be a really interesting defensive partner if he falls to the Canucks too. Having a three punch of Hughes, Byram, and Juolevi for the next few years could make for one of the most promising/creative defensive cores in the NHL for years to come. But this is all wishful thinking.
  18. Kind of sick seeing posts hypothesizing that Leipsic as the odd man out when Roussel enters the lineup. The guy had 9 points in 14 games when he got here last season and he's stood out in a good way this preseason/first game of the season. Don't see him going anywhere. Granlund on the other hand... boy have the mighty fallen.

What he did was last season, he's gotta prove he can keep it going and it he doesn't Granny brings a broader skill set.

Honestly, I want Schaller waived. But I just see Granlund being the odd man out despite also being solid like Leipsic. Best scenario would be to waive Biega since he's probably not going to get claimed and the Utica Comets could use a vet anchoring the blueline. But like others have posted, a guy could get injured in the next game or two meaning all this is moot. Just seems like Roussel will be back within the week if he's traveling with the team...

      coastal.view

why so twisted about leipsic or granlund

these are not the key players on the team

they are more of the fringe element

removing either or someone else of their calibre in the bottom 6

will not really disrupt the team

just some fans who have a special attachment to certain fringe players

coach can sit leipsic, granlund, or virtanen

will not really impact the line up or game very much

  19. His injury probably spooked management. It was once reported he wasn't going to be good to go until December... but he's obviously made a quick recovery. I think it's good to let defensemen overripen. I suspect Brassard will be signed to an entry deal before May 2019. He's a good enough prospect to bring to Utica next year.
  20. If you were CBJ and MTL would you do a deal that's basically Carey Price for Sergei Bobrovsky (who signs an extension) + 2nd round pick + B prospect?

Was thinking about this. MTL is "rebuilding" and has extra cap. CBJ wants to keep its playoff streak alive. Bobrovsky wants money and Price wants to win. Feels like a real fit especially if the Canadiens can extract some futures from CBJ.

    Thoughts?

It's an interesting idea. Don't like tying up that much coin in a 'tender. If I were GM, prob about 8 mill would be the limit.

I'll guess Bob winds up traded west. His PO #'s are iffy...

This would be good for both teams, providing Columbus (a notoriously cheap team) could afford Price.

Can you really call two consecutive years a 'playoff streak'?

  21. Not sure if this is video has been shared yet but this is a video of Manukyan, from last year, taking down Daniil Lapin in a fight. Lapin is 6'0 and 170 pounds. Love the tenacity in his game, I can see why we picked him. Hope he has success in the KHL this year and that he migrates over to the NHL next year. Having him in the pipeline is good. This kid has legit NHL potential.
  22. Oh great, Quinn Hughes has an even better path at becoming a Hobey Baker candidate/winner now. That's not a bad thing. Don't hate him going back to college and if guys like Zach Werenski and Charlie MacAvoy have showed us anything... Going back to college for your D+1 season can only do a world of good. Short term pain for long term gain!
  23. Don't hate this. 1) Hughes gets to keep developing. Though he has the skills, he needs to add a bit of muscle. Another year of NCAA hockey will let him bulk up. 2) He has a chance to make a run for the Hobey Baker. It'll probably come down to him or his brother winning it this year. 3) He gets to play a year with his brother. He clearly was excited about this at the draft and now it becomes a reality. 4) Now this opens up a spot for Juolevi (the forgotten man) to earn a spot on the team. Hughes will debut in March if he doesn't win it all in the NCAA this year. 5) He's following Zach Wesinewski's development track and that's not a bad thing at all. 6) Gives the Canucks some time to get rid of a defenseman or two from this lineup by March. 7) Short term pain for long term pain... no need to rush him. We've got other exciting prospects to pass the time. Excited to see Hughes rip it up in the NCAA this coming season!
  24. He was a favorite of Greener's in Green's final year as head coach in Utica. Green seems to have a soft spot for him. With him not being waiver eligible this year, he could be the dark horse for the 8th man spot. Him and Sautner are both waiver eligible this year for the first time so there'll be a tough decision. Good chance McEneny gets waived and starts in Utica to get game reps in before becoming the first callup when injuries strike. Very low odds another NHL team takes a chance on McEneny with his injury from last year... but who knows, a few years ago we took Ryan Stanton from the Blackhawks when he had little to no NHL experience so stranger things have happened.
