  1. He was a favorite of Greener's in Green's final year as head coach in Utica. Green seems to have a soft spot for him. With him not being waiver eligible this year, he could be the dark horse for the 8th man spot. Him and Sautner are both waiver eligible this year for the first time so there'll be a tough decision. Good chance McEneny gets waived and starts in Utica to get game reps in before becoming the first callup when injuries strike. Very low odds another NHL team takes a chance on McEneny with his injury from last year... but who knows, a few years ago we took Ryan Stanton from the Blackhawks when he had little to no NHL experience so stranger things have happened.
  2. The debate really is will Quinn Hughes play for us in September or in March? He's going to play this season. Just a matter of when not if.
  3. Surprising move by Valk. He's been Qualified by the Panthers and is a NA boy but still opted for the KHL. If he can put together a solid year in the KHL, he could probably earn an NHL deal if/when he returns. Always a shame that the Canucks didn't offer him an ELC. We groomed him for years. Glad at least 1 NHL team believes in him enough to give him a QO despite running off to Russia.
  4. Yes. He inked his ELC a few weeks ago. Plan is for him to report to training camp and barring some unbelievable performance there, he'll go to Utica for the year and continue to develop.
  5. The Cap hit is fine, I just have trouble with the term.
  6. Honestly, Sautner, McEaney, and Hughes make Pouliot irrelevant. I won't be shocked if Pouliot signs elsewhere. Rather see a more promising defender like Evan McEaney or Ashton Sautner (who opened eyes late last season) get a shot as as the 7th d.
  7. I have my doubts that Gaunce will survive this year. I wouldn't be shocked if Gaunce gets waived at the end of training camp. He's got zero offensive upside and though he is sound defensively, he offers little else. If the Canucks sign a defensive C (like Beagle) on July 1st, don't consider Gaunce a lock to make the Canucks. As for Madden, I liked Wise more, but I trust Brackett & company... I'll wait and see how Madden turns out. There's a good chance Madden makes an impact in the NCAA over the next three years. Fingers crossed he does.
  8. By the way, for all of you who are complaining that we didn't draft "size", just remember all the busts we've had when we went the size route. Size in the later rounds gets you picks like Brett McKenzie, MacKenze Stewart, Sawyer Hannay, Wesley Myron, Tate Olson, Rodrigo Abols, and Kyle Petit -- players with low ceilings and even lower chances at having an NHL impact. I'd rather draft a smaller player with a higher potential, but with higher risk, then go the "safe" route. You can always sign size/grit players as undrafted FAs later on (Zack MacEwen, Jalen Chatfield, etc)... Manukyan will either be the next Ondrej Palat, Nikita Gusev (KHL superstar drafted in the seventh round in 2012), Ondrej Kase or he won't. Rather take the risk then watch another team take the same risk and reap the rewards like we've seen over the years. Happy with this pick, not happy with the size complaints. SPEED AND SKILL!
  9. I was curious what his KHL obligations were. 2 years is good. Will give him time to play against men and bulk up a bit more. I expect the Canucks will try and get him over at the end of his contract. Fair development time for a 6th rounder. Looking forward to following him next year in the KHL. I'm sure Artyom signed the deal expecting not to be drafted by the NHL this year. Just hope Artyom comes to the Summer Prospects Camp this July. He's now one of the more interesting prospects in the system.
  10. Canucks needed to add another goalie. Since he's NCAA, there's no rush to get him to Utica. I expect him to sign after his third year. At that point Demko will be with the Canucks, DiPetrio will be manning the crease in Utica, and Bachman's new deal will have expired. Good long term move. Hopefully he turns into the Cayden Primeau of this year's draft. (Primeau was a 7th round goalie selection last year by the Canadiens who took the NCAA by storm last season and looks like a legit steals by the Canadiens). Wishing the best of luck to this kid.
  11. He traded our 6th rounder this year to WAS for there sixth rounder this year + WAS's sixth rounder next year (2019). Which is a good deal for the Canucks. Was hoping for Anderson MacDonald, Liam Kirk, or Samuel Harvey at this pick but I'm fine with this... SPEED AND SKILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. Hoping he's not Cole Cassels 2.0. A couple of years at Northeastern will do him wonders. I expect we will sign him after his second year at Northeastern. Happy to see the Canucks sticking there mantra of "speed and skill" -- can't get enough of that.
  13. Preferred Bode Wilde with this pick... That said, Jet Woo was the other person I wanted after Bode Wilde so I'm happy. Bruising d man, he's got good potential. He adds to the depth of our prospect pool and has legitimate NHL potential. See him as an NHLer in 3 years.
  14. So, do you think the Canucks sign Hughes this summer? How exciting would it be if the Canucks had a Hughes - Juolevi defensive pairing in Utica next year. Would kind of be unreal. But it could be real...
  15. This takes the pressure off of Juolevi to have to crack the Canucks roster. Thank god. Starting in Utica will not be bad for Juolevi. Happy he's getting surgery. I wonder if this was an injury that was nagging him last season? Could explain why he hasn't been able to take his game to the next level?
  16. Gunnarsson makes for good defense depth. He'll sign with the Canucks next year and it'll be good. I legitimately think that there's a good chance every player in this draft class signs with the Canucks unless Jack Rathbone pulls a Vesey/Schultz (but I doubt it he does that, seems like a high character kid). Gunnarson most likely never lights the world on fire but I'm sure Benning and co hope Gunnarsson can become a Brooks Orpik-type. Has not offensive upside but can play solid minutes and be reliable defensively. For a kid as young as him to have no points and be in the SHL for two years does speak volumes for his defensive game, SHL is a tough league, so there's something there. I won't be counting Gunnarsson out.
  17. Like Boeser and Horvat before him, I highly doubt Petersson will see anytime in the AHL. He's pretty much guaranteed a spot on the Canucks... And not because of his pedigree but because of how damn talented he is. Fall can't come fast enough.
  18. He's got the summer to recover, it'll be fine. I'm not too worried. The injury could have been worse. Still stinks.
  19. Yikes. Looks like Tom Dundon is getting the band back together... who steered the Atlanta Thrashers into being one of the worst teams in modern NHL history. Don Waddell is the GM of the Hurricanes? Rick Dudley is an Executive? What the heck is going on. If I was a Hurricanes fan, I'd be scared.

Heading to Quebec City?  Weren’t their rumours about that move last fall?

      Delaying the inevitable.

      - Arizona to Houston or Kansas City possibly Portland.

      - Carolina to Quebec City.

@Ghostsof1915 -- Dundon is from Texas. Dudley/Waddell are basically responsible for the Thrashers becoming the Jets. I can see a world where Dundon tries to tank the Hurricanes further to facilitate a move to Houston.

My bet says Ottawa moves to QC before Carolina, if at all now. Arizona could go ANYWHERE.

  20. Tryamkin will rejoin the Canucks once we're good. So give it a year or two. Once his KHL deal ends, the Canucks should be playoff bound, and he'll be back. The Canucks will need a mature Nikita once they're contending.
  21. Lepisic's addition to the lineup likely means that one of Baertschi or Granlund will be moved. I'm thinking Baertschi gets moved because he'll yield the bigger return of the two. And I also like Granlund's versatility as he's solid in both the bottom six and the top six, those kinds of players are tough to come by. Baertschi is either a top 6 guy or bust. Either way, always happy with this trade and I'm pretty confident Leipsic will be a Canuck for a long time and will grow alongside the new core in the Post Sedins era.
  22. I hope the NHL honorarily drafts the players who passed away in the Humbolt Broncos bus crash + the player who is now paralyzed at this year's draft.

Honestly, I don't think it's a slap in the face to anybody. It's the league recognizing this tragedy and memorializing them in a meaningful way. All of the players who passed away most likely harbored NHL dreams. Would they have made it if they were still alive to the big show? I don't know. Maybe one or two of them.

My thinking was that it would be a nice gesture from the best hockey league in the world to recognize those kids commitments to the game of hockey. And I only say the ones who passed away because, like you said, I don't know how the survivors would feel. Maybe the entire team could be drafted. Or just the fallen. Those details aren't important right now. I'm not a parent but I feel like it would be an honor if the highest leveled league in the sport my son played honored him on that level after this tragedy. Again, in my mind, they'd be honorary made by the league -- not any team -- either before the draft or after the draft.

I was inspired to share this thought because a few years ago the NBA honorarily drafted a player named Isaiah Austin. Isaiah was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome rendering a future NBA career moot. I feel like the NHL could do something similar here this year. The circumstances are obviously different but it was a nice thought, at least I thought.

As a parent, I can tell you that as nice of a gesture as it is, it would be a permanent reminder of the loss that was suffered. It does nothing to help the parent during the grieving process, it just seems like a hollow platitude. A base courtesy so the league can say "hey at least we did something".

The examples of other players being drafted when they likely didn't deserve to be, did not involve tragic loss of life, there's a huge difference.

I think that as Deb said, less is more in this instance. The affected families have a gaping hole in their lives that will never be fully healed, the best way to honor these kids is to respect their memory and leave the families to grieve.

Situations like these compel people to feel like they have to do something, and in doing so make it about them and their conscience which is even more insensitive and disrespectful than simply doing nothing.

for perspective, i'll take to worse possible spin on this

just so that all aspects can be considered

so you are asking the parents of the victims to make their kids post mortem commodities that can be drafted by nhl teams

who can then use their new rights to these names and images to do whatever they want with the memory of each kid that is drafted? really?

      that provides comfort to who?

  23. BOLD PREDCITION: Evan McEneny and Ashton Sautner are going to surprise people and snag spots on the Canucks d-corps next season. Likely as depth guys with potential to move up the lineup.

Jimmy McGill, both require waivers next season as both have played 3 years of professional hockey.

Id like McEneny to get a spot but Sautner has played well too. My guess is Sautner would pass through waivers do to having less offensive potential but who knows.

For either to get a spot though Hutton would need to be traded. Maybe Pouliot but Id rather keep him considering the offence he showed this year.

Hutton to Arizona for Domi please

Hutton for Domi. Hell and yes, even if we need to add

@-AJ- -- I don't think Biega is a safe bet to keep his roster spot as I can see him being sent to Utica to become their captain again. I'm also not convinced this d-core will return mainly because they were pretty mediocre this season. I expect one or two of Tanev, Hutton, and/or Pouliot being moved for futures/prospects opening up spots.

And as Jimmy McGill said, both McEneny and Sautner will be waiver eligible so there's a chance one or both could be snagged if they are sent down. Those two (especially McEneny) have worked closely with Travis too so they have an inside track for sticking... much like Archibald became a Green favorite back at training camp this past September despite not having an NHL contract.
