  1. If Gaudette signs this year, I think he has a legit shot at cracking the team as the 4th line C (displacing Chaput) and moving his way up the Canucks depth chart faster than most people would ever expect. These college kids are great because they workout so much, they come into the NHL with NHL strength -- something that happens rarely with CHL drafted talent (who need a few years to catch up to the rest of the men they end up playing against). Also, if we can somehow snag Aston-Reese, I think we could have a young and exciting 4th line for next season. Just imagine: Gaunce - Gaudette - Aston-Reese instead of Gaunce - Chaput - Skille/Dorsett (No offense to Chaput, I think he's done an admirable job this season and deserves to be re-signed by the Canucks). Gaudette's the next Hutton, I have a feeling.
  2. He is the darkhorse prospect that the Canucks have. Really like him as a player. Good goal scorer and versatile. He may need one more college season before he makes the jump to the pros but I think when he does go pro, he could shock and crack the Canucks lineup the year he does. Also, his linemate Zach Aston-Reese is a college UFA after this year. May be worth trying to sign for forward depth. Aston-Reese needs a year in the AHL but is showing good potential too. Either way, Gaudette is somebody to be excited for.
  3. This. Jack Skille was a 7th overall pick and the way people are complaining about him being a Canuck over Etem (mind you, there's a 5 year age gap... but still) shows that not everybody in the Top 10 is going to be a "generational" talent (which, by the way, there are VERY few of... McDavid, Crosby, Ovechkin, Lemieux, Gretzky... are on the list... which is VERY short). What the goal should be in a top 10 pick is somebody who can be EFFECTIVE on an NHL lineup... hopefully as a 1st line player but if they cap out as a solid 3rd liner... that's better than most draft picks. Benning's greatest asset is his drafting. He can spot talent and grabs them. I think Stukel, Olson, McKenzie, and Candella are examples of late round steals by Benning already. Factor in that Demko looks to be an NHL goalie, Juolevi will be a top 4 (AT MINIMUM) defenseman by the time he's 22 (so within 4 years), and you got a potential first line winger (second line, at worst) in Boeser and things aren't super catastrophic. I think had Dubois not been selected by CBJ, he'd be a Canuck and we'd be talking about a need for a guy like Juolevi. Now that we have a guy like Juolevi (who will be insolated from pressure by the likes of young d-men in Gudbranson, Hutton, Stecher, Tanev, and Tryamkin) and that's not bad. I suspect that when Juolevi was selected the Canucks were torn between him and Tyson Jost. Tyson's the guy I would have loved the Canucks to have picked but Juolevi is a good consolidation prize. We do need scoring. I expect next year we'll select a centre. Who? Not sure yet. Really depends if the Canucks somehow claw there way into a playoff spot or not. But as Nuxfanabroad said... there are always gems in the later stages of the first round... they just take a little longer to mature and stuff and that's fine. As Gillis use to say "it's a process".
  4. Stecher will be the first callup this season on defense. I guess it's better to have Biega sit on the bench for most of this season over Stecher anyways. Still... the best players didn't make this team and that should say something about management. #StealthTankContinues #ConspiracyTheories #hashtagsonaforum

I doubt that Biega gets claimed anyways. We are most likely losing Granlund or Sbisa on waivers anyways.

  5. Worst Canucks 7th round pick of recent memory: Matthew Beattie, Sawyer Hannay, or Mackenze Stewart?

      Baer.

Hannay is in the LNAH.... Fits his play style

    3. Jägermeister

      Jägermeister

Stewart doesn't belong in the same category as the other 2.  He at least got an ELC and looks like he could make a pro career somewhere in the world, be it the AHL or Europe.

Beattie and Hannay were both scrubs before they ever even got out of the NCAA and the Q.

Beattie is playing in France. Livin' the life, they say.

  6. Philip Larsen needs to up his game, Stecher's coming for his job. Stecher looked great out there tonight. I know it's only one game but if Stecher can keep the momentum up, he'll be a lock to make the Canucks.
  7. Alexis A'Doust has yet to be cut by the Canucks. Bold prediction: Canucks ink him to an entry level deal tomorrow.

  8. Am I the only one who sometimes feels like the Sedins will pull a Jagr and/or Messier and play into their 40's? I get the feeling that if any players do it... it'll be them. I can see them being our third liners in the next few years if that's the case.

They've had nagging injuries for the past 3 years. We'll be lucky if they play past 40.

    3. Baka

      Baka

Not impossible but keep in mind when Messier was 35 he scored 99 points in 74 games and when Jagr was 35 he scored 71 in 82. 96 in 82 the year before if relevant. The Sedins could hold up but they really don't look like the same type of players Messier and Jagr were

  9. Radim Vrbata still hasn't been signed yet... and people still said he had trade value at the Trade Deadline. HA!

      Kazmanian Devil

I agree with others, he'd be the most typical Devils signing possible.

  10. The Canucks should really try and pry Mike Hoffman from the Senators. Yeah? I think he'd be a good fit on this team... give him the long term contract he wants. He's still young and the Senators, for reasons unknown, seem to have soured on him. What do you think the Canucks would have to give up for him? Hansen and Cassels?!?

    1. 48MPHSlapShot

      48MPHSlapShot

I think Sutter would have to go the other way, along with a prospect/pick. I'd be game.

    2. Phil_314

      Phil_314

Wouldn't be surprised if they asked for Sven, but I just might be down to give him up.  Hoffman's proven (he's a high-volume shooter such that there shouldn't be much worry of him slumping as his results aren't %-driven), his shot is big-time and he's the kind of player who'd thrive in the new NHL, with speed and an elite shot.

    3. Mr.DirtyDangles

      Mr.DirtyDangles

Good luck : D   Dude is a beast already and is a key piece to their future.

  11. My thoughts exactly. At least he'd get to play in a consistent league/team for a season.
  12. I think it'll all depend on how he does at training camp. If he looks ready to play in the pros, I'm sure the Canucks will place him either on their roster or in the AHL. If he looks like he needs another year of Junior, I'm sure he'll return to the London Knights. But I don't think he'll return to Finland, he made the move over to NA for a reason and I don't see him going back to Finland anytime soon.
  13. Hoping that the Canucks pick Matthew Phillips in the 5th or 6th or 7th rounds (if he's avaliable) from the Victoria Royals. He could be our own version of Johnny Gaudreau, if given the chance.

      thejazz97

I'd rather take Brooks from Regina. Got to watch him live; he's pretty exciting.

    2. Quantum

      Quantum

I think Brooks can be signed. I'd try and sign Brooks and draft Phillips... with the hopes that one of these small, speedy wingers becomes a Gaudreau-lite. Only downside I see is that Brooks put up his huge numbers as an overager while Phillips put up his numbers as a 17/18 year old. That's what makes Phillips, in my mind, slightly more exciting. (I also got to see Phillips play once this year and he caught my eye too).

  14. Super unlikely. He will likely join the Canucks this time next year. He is too skilled to want to be that patient. He isn't a late Bloomer like Vesey.
  15. A year in the CHL would be great for him. He is technically eligible to play in the AHL if he signs a contract this offseason. What he shows at the Rookie Camp in July will likely determine where he lands next year. I think he was hoping to be up in the top Czech league all year this year but it didn't happen. He's dominate against his own age group in his own country... which says something but not everything. Once he's playing with some of the best players in his age range in the CHL, we'll likely get a better idea of what kind of player he is... hopefully this kid is a gem, we need more late round gems to turn out well if we want this rebuild to go quickly and not end up like an Edmonton disaster. (I trust Benning with his drafting... that's for sure!)
  16. Not thrilled by the Canucks lack of College UFA signings. Not good. They should have signed at least one guy by now. No contract offer to Brandon Tanev? Come on! I get it, we need defensive prospects... but we also need prospects who can score.

  17. I don't have a link but according to Twitter, Preds GM David Poile went on Preds TV and went off on the Jimmy Vesey situation saying that "I clearly believe that Jimmy has received bad advice and bad counsel." -- This is going to get interesting.

  18. Fox and Friends traded for future considerations

  19. I'm not mad about Hamhuis being moved. I was expecting that he'd stick around. I'm more pissed at the fact that Vrbata is still here. I get it, he was good last season -- but they couldn't get anything for him?!? I call shenanigans. -- I just hope the Canucks can sway a few College UFAs to sign with us and get a Hamhuis extension done... that'll ease the sting of this day more.

Casey Nelson, Drake Caggiula, or Brandon Tanev please.

  20. My gut's telling me that Dan Hamhuis has refused to waive his NTC and that he won't be moved today.

  21. What's with the Canucks dropping games 5-2? It's starting to feel like a conspiracy. I mean 5 + 2 = 7. 3 + 4 = 7. 34 is the number Auston Matthews. AUSTON MATTHEWS HERE WE COME. #thestealthtankisreal

      Ghostsof1915

But the Comets are winning 5-2.

      <twilight zone theme begins>

  22. Hate to burst your bubble but... Nikita Tryamkin will likely take that title next season.
  23. Dmitry Zhukenov is definately one of the Canucks most exciting prospects. I think he's going to catch many people off guard and I believe that he's got a chance to "Hutton" his way into the lineup. As in, once he makes the jump pro, I think he could push his way into the lineup unexpectatedly. We've got a gem with this one.
  24. Prust for Scott? Can Benning make that happen? Please?!? Let's return Prust to Montreal, and have Scott do the job Prust was supposed to do with the kids. That's a win/win, ya?!?

  25. In an ideal world, the Canucks will be able to lock up Troy Stretcher (local boy, defensive depth, he'll probably sign here given the chance... especially with the youth movement in full swing here and a legit shot at making the big club next season), Drake Caggiula (another great player, linemate of Boeser's, was highly touted UFA last season but opted to go back for his senior year. May be swayed to sign here over the Hawks to remain with Boeser -- especially if Boeser signs this offseason with the club, which I think could happen... would be similar to Evan Rodrigues signing in Buffalo to try and play with Jack Eichel again). Either way, North Dakota has a great hockey program and the NCAA/USHL are definitely leagues to really eye prospects from in the near future. The Canucks could really replinish there prospect cupboard by signing some college guys, that's for sure.
