Some thoughts

I was watching game five against the Sharks in the '11 playoffs the other day, and it struck me what an amazingly good team we had that year! The Sedins were arguably top five players in the league tht year (don't get me wrong, they're still great players, but I don't think that they'll win any more Art Ross Trophys).

On defense we had Edler, Bieksa, Hamhuis and Erhoff in the top four. Wow! I understand why MG didn't re-sign Erhoff, but you can't deny that he was great when he was here...

Kesler had a career year that season too... And the list could be made even longer.

What I'm trying to say is that even though we may very well win the Cup this year (we're at least a top five team in the league in my mind), I don't think we'll ever see this team as good as we were in the 2010-11 season. At least not in a long while again.

Look at it this. We lost stanley cup with prime sedins, record year kesler, erhoff and many more career years.

This year we have a booth who doesnt produce, kesler is figured out, sedins are still amazing but as kesler is figured out sedins are the main sorce of points and shut down.

We have no advantage over 2011 only disadvantages. Teams like chicago have gotten better, boston has gotten better and many more teams.

We need a shake up or injection of something talent wise.

I don't think you can forget Burr, who does all the little things that help drive the team. His work in front of the net, his ability to be a 3rd Sedin/Burrdin, his work on the PK, etc.

People are freaking out but I still have confidence in this group. They've had a flu bug hit the bench and, before that, were shaking off some rust. Then there is the officiating. :sadno: I feel we'll get firing and be healthy just at the right time...(and I' secretly hoping that the flu bug traveled with the team and we share the love to other benches. I know, awful, but all's fair in love & war).

I believe our star players have dropped off a bit since their prime (honestly not as badly as most think) but our depth is much better.

In the 2011 run we had Higgins, Lapierre and Torres providing us with tertiary scoring while Raymond, Samuelsson and Burrows were our secondary scorers.

Now we have Burrows, Booth and a similar Higgins as our secondary scorers but tertiary scorers like Raymond, a much better Hansen, Kassian, Schroeder and Lapierre.

Our defence is also much more physical than it was in 2011 - a big reason we lost to the Bruins. Garrison, Vandermeer and even Barker make this team much bigger on the back-end so will deal with big forwards much better, as well as injuries. Also, Tanev, Edler and even Bieksa have improved since 2011.

Our goaltending is supposedly better too. The only reason we're not tops in the league and dominating everything is poor special teams and defensive management right now. Thank the assistant bone-head coaches for that. Personel wise, we're fine.

I feel like guys are consistently playing like they did in game 7 of the SCF: 2nd gear. All these other teams (the good ones esp. like Chicago) are coming out and skating circles around our forwards and defence. They look slow, tired, injured, and stuck in 2nd gear while all these other teams are in higher gears. Chicago plays like they are in a 6 speed sports car and their record shows it.

Is our sleep doctor giving our guys too much sleep?

Are they practicing mindfulness meditation and going all zen or something?

Maybe AV has lost the dressing room? I think this may be a possibility. I mean, how many times as a player would you like to continue the same system over and over again, knowing that other teams have figured it out, only to have your coaches continually saying, "stick with the game plan and it will all fall in to place." Only it isn't falling in to place.

I just don't see the compete level anymore from our team, haven't seen it all year. Our two #1 goalies are the reason for our ATM winning record, not our players.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I just don't see a Canuck team that looks like they want to win anymore.

Something has to give eventually whether it's a trade to mix things up and get a game changer, or a coaching change. I can't help but have a nagging feeling that neither will be happening any time soon and we will all be experiencing an early summer as fans. I hope I am wrong.

Namaste :(

I wonder...would it work if we put Kesler on the Sedin line? Seeing as we won't pass to his wingers, maybe we should put him with our two best playmakers? Schroeder played well in the 2nd line centre role; now all we need is a good LH shutdown centre for the third line. However, this does bump a lot of of our good wingers down a line, not something we need.

We should blow up our team if we don't at least make it to the Finals this year.

Fire AV.

Blow up the team with only a few exceptions. Keep Burrows, Schroeder, and Kassian. Trade Kesler before he's even more glass and still has some value, package Booth with something cause he alone won't get much, and yes, even trade the Sedins.

I don't get why MG thinks this team is still a Stanley cup team... it's our 2nd season after the finals, everyone has gotten better and we haven't. Our stars have declined a little bit also and were using the same strategy that gets picked apart by any good coach.

and we're still soft, Kassian barely hits and Volpatti just got waived.....

can't wait for another first round exit unless Gillis wakes up and stops getting project and depth players.

I really wish we found a way to keep Ehrhoff. He was great at carrying the puck up the ice and was dynamite on the power play. Erhoff and Garrison would be absolute money together. He wasn't as bad defensively as people made him out to be and was actually a formidable penalty killer as well. He is 5th in scoring for the Sabres and has the highest +/- on the team (+3) and his 24:43 TOI/G is by far the most on the team (Leopold is 21:15). He is one of the few bright spots on that awful team.

With Daniel having to play D on the 1st PP unit it tells us that the team has a gaping hole that needs filling.

Salo made that hole look a lot better than it obviously was with no effective first line puck mover and PP specialist(with respect to hit and miss Edler).
