Drafting Horvat makes Gaunce expendable through trade.

Wow, all of the Gaunce fan boys are really offended. People, he's not that great. Have you seen him try to skate? At the NHL level he will not be able to keep up. And if you watch highlights of all of his goals what do you see? They are practically all either:

a. garbage goals that take no skill

or b. The tail end of a tic toe passing play by his linemates.

You guys think he's all that and a bag of chips, so I figured at least one GM might feel the same way and would overpay for him, ala Feaster. All of you need to chill out and realize that he's not as great as you think. Horvat is the much better option.

Right now, we have 4 good center prospects in our pool. Horvat, Schroeder, Lain and Gaunce. Shinkaruk can also play center so make it 5.

The reality is, the Canucks don't have any decent bottom-6 centers locked up for a long time, but more importantly - Henrik Sedin and Kesler are getting old and are going to need replacing. Cup winning teams are built around a solid core of great top-2, two-way centers (Toews/Sharp, Kopitar/Richards, Krejci/Bergeron, Crosby/Malkin etc.). IMO depth at center is the single most important part of a team in the playoffs due to matchups. We NEED depth down the middle, because once the twins and Kesler are too old to contribute in our top-6, these young guys can take their spots.

Gaunce is a solid middle-6 forward, probably won't end up a first liner but we don't need to ask that off him when we've got a guy like Horvat now who can step into that role. Schroeder is most likely a top-9 center, and Lain will probably never cut the top-6 so that works out perfectly. If everything goes to plan our top-4 centers are set and locked for the foreseable future, with guys like Shinkaruk, Jensen and Kassian filling out the roster holes that will be left once Higgins/Burrows retire.

You trade away Schroeder or Gaunce now and rely on Horvat, and you'll be in trouble. We don't have as much quantity as people think, and if Horvat doesn't pan out to be a productive center then we're in even bigger trouble.

It doesn't seem like a smart move to trade away Gaunce when we haven't seen them reach their potential yet. What if Horvat busts? What if Gaunce becomes the next Kesler? Or maybe they end up playing completely different roles. Horvat seems to have more offended while Gaunce could be a solid grit/checker.

At a time when the Canucks are trying to get younger and transition towards the future, it doesn't make sense to trade away top prospects. Especially considering that Henrik is getting older and probably won't be able to anchor the Top 6 for much longer.

To a point I agree with you. We have strong top 6 of prospects, while having Kes, Higgins and Booth around.

Shinkaruk, Horvat, Gaunce, Kassian, Jensen, Schroeder. I think either Gaunce or Schroeder are the odd ones out if we are assuming they reach their potential.

Shinkaruk - Horvat - Kassian

Schroeder - Kesler - Jensen

Higgins - Gaunce - Hansen

Booth - Lain - Weise

Consider our drafting, if we draft another player like Gaunce or Schroeder then of course it would seem that one of our prospect would be traded.

Odds are at least a couple of our centre prospects willeither not pan out or not reach their full potential.

If ALL goes perfectly, then we have Horvat as our 2nd line centre in as few years, Gaunce on the 3rd, and Lain on the 4th.... you have to remember, that is pretty much best case scenario for where these guys project... and lots can go wrong, maybe Horvat doesn't pan out as a top 6 guy and ends up being a third line utility player like Malhotra (who was actually drafted higher).
