On Thursday, Oilers General Manager Craig MacTavish announced that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 20, had signed a contract extension to keep playing with the Oilers for another 7 years. The $42 million contract extension comes as the first-round pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft entered the final year of his entry-level deal. Nugent-Hopkins hails from Burnaby, B.C. – last year, the centre had four goals and 20 assists in 40 games with the Oilers. Over 102 career NHL games, the 6’ 1”, 185 lb. player has registered 22 goals, and 54 assists. Beluga Whale
The Oilers are going to have fun holding together the rest of their core, when they're handed out contracts like this.
TheRussianRocket.
Edmonton has payed out all the youngsters. Eberle has 6 years remaining with a cap hit of $6 million annually. Hall has 8 years remaining with $6 million annually. And after this year, now RNH will have 7 years at $6 mill per also! ...think the Oilers will be handicapped by all these contracts or will they be able to control it? I think they might be able to control it...Smyth and Hemsky are FA's after this season and that's $7 mill in cap. They can also opt to let Jones, Nick Schultz, and a few other dmen go and it'd give them an additional $5+ mill in cap relief ontop of the $7 mill from Hemsky and Smyth. If so, they'd obviously have to start prospects or sign players at very low prices to fill in. I'm guessing Klefbom and Nurse come in and fill in the holes but still, then they have to sign those 2! I'm predicting when it's all said and done, the Oilers will keep all the top youngsters except Yakupov and trade him. For what, who knows - depends on how MacT wants to work it financially...if they believes he doesn't have the cap, he'll trade him for picks/top prospects or if he thinks he can manage the cap, then who knows, maybe they can ship him out and get that #1 dman they're so desperately in need of. Drouin
Still young and has a total of 20 goals ? Has had injury problems but he'll be an excellent player and someday worth more than 6M.
insomniac604
Their top 3 are all signed long-term for reasonable amounts. If the Oilers get good as projected, in a few years people will be ok with less money to stay on the team. Getting three players of that caliber signed to long-term deals this young will be a steal. Lancaster
I see they're going the Tampa Bay Lightning model..... post-2004. No goalie, no defense.

Plum
They'll have to give Yakupov, Schultz these contracts too if they want to keep them. If they don't they can keep their first line without any secondary scoring even if they decide to sign Yakupov and Schultz they'll be in cap trouble for years if the cap doesn't significantly goes up to about 75 million~

c00kies
I'm expecting a big season from Dubnyk this season, but Edmonton still needs to put a better defense in front of him.

Plum
I cant see Schultz getting that much... he wasnt a 1st overall pick and not many D-men get 6+ mil.

mangosteens
Oilers are taking a gamble that Nuge, Eberle, and Hall can become something because to this point they have not shown they can be the key leading pieces of a team that actually wins hockey games and is a playoff contender. Big pressure year for the Oilers. But not really for Hall, Eberle, and Nuge since they have big fat contracts already without really having established much...
