Annual College Free Agent: Hockey's Future

Seeing as we usually try to nab a top NCAA FA, I thought we should get to know who MG might be looking at.

Carey, Morrison among top available NCAA free agents

As the NCAA season winds down, NHL teams begin to descend on the college hockey landscape in hopes of adding available free agents to their pipelines. Hockey Future takes a closer look at ten players (listed alphabetically by last name) who have all drawn considerable NHL interest and could soon be headed to an NHL organization near you. This year’s list features six forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender. Unless otherwise noted, all stats are current as of March 6th.

Gillis is a very smart man when it comes to college free agent signings. Makes up for the lack of draft picks by signing those guys and they turn out to be very solid. Just ask Chris Tanev.

...as for this year, I'm expecting a few college signings like usual and one or two blossom and turn out to become regulars on the team. Very high reward-low risk system and it doesn't hurt.

Austin Czarnik would be a great pickup. Skilled center who is tearing up the league. Don't see him making the jump right away though, will need a bit of time to adjust to pro hockey.

Also, utica could use a ton of help so any of these guys would be good additions, especially up front

Lacking depth on RW, unless we can get Dal Colle

Ryan Haggerty, RW

Junior, Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute (ECAC)

Ryan Haggerty started this season as the NCAA’s hottest goal scorer. He was named the ECAC Player of the Month for October after amassing 10 goals in RPI’s first six games. During that time, Haggerty also posted his first career hat trick on October 19th in the Engineers’ 7-1 win over Sacred Heart. While he has cooled off a bit since, Haggerty is still among the nation’s top goal scorers.

The Stamford, CT native currently leads RPI with 43 points (28 goals, 15 assists) in 35 games to date. His 43 points exceeds his point total from last season, while his 28 goals are more than double his sophomore total. Haggerty’s 28 goals also rank third in the nation, while his 10 power-play goals is tied for fifth.

Haggerty is a 6’0”, 200-pound power forward who simply knows what to do with the puck when it’s on his stick, and it’s an attribute that has made scouts really take notice of Haggerty this season. He can score from just about anywhere, but is especially dangerous around the net. He uses his size, strength and tenacity very effectively in driving to the net and protecting the puck. He competes and isn’t afraid to go into the dirty areas. Haggerty has greatly improved his play along the walls, playing tougher and smarter in that area. He’s a powerful skater with some speed that does a very good job of keeping his feet moving.

Chris McCarthy, C

Senior, University of Vermont (Hockey East)

Following an excellent junior campaign last season, Chris McCarthy was actually offered an NHL contract but declined, opting to return to Vermont to finish out his collegiate career. As a result, he’s had an even better showing this season and has seen increased attention from NHL teams as a result. Among the teams having already shown interest in McCarthy are the San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks, whose prospect camps he attended in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

(teams that seem to draft well)

The Collegeville, PA native currently leads the Catamounts in both points (40) and assists (24) in 34 games to date. His 16 goals and +16 rating both rank second on the team. Most recently, McCarthy was named a semi-finalist for this year’s Walter Brown Award.

McCarthy is a 6’1”, 205-pound forward blessed with great hands and vision who thinks the game exceedingly well. An attribute that has really gotten the attention of scouts is his ability to play in any situation smartly and effectively. One of McCarthy’s greatest assets is his ability to anticipate and know where plays will end up, not only offensively but defensively as well. While McCarthy is a center, he has also seen time on the wing this season. Although McCarthy is known more for his superb playmaking ability, he can score goals as well. He does a terrific job of controlling the tempo of a game and makes the players around him better. McCarthy serves as Vermont’s captain, and his strong leadership has been invaluable to his team’s success this season.

Haggerty might just top off as a physical bottom 6 forward, but then again he'd fit right in if he can jam in some goals since that's how this team scores now anyways. Speaking of jam it would be sweet to be able to get Macklemore's brother (I wish) on the team so we can play more of his songs (and to get Colin Campbell would be gravy --> calls'll finally work in our favor! :P)

But for real, out of that list McCarthy sounds like the type of guy this team can use (two way guy with actual skill).

Sure its easy to sign one or 4 but you usually have to " Woooo'em" with promises of playing time or one way contracts.

On another note..... with respect to having our 50 man roster.....can we not cut guys like Bill Sweatt or Colin Stuart to make room for these college FA's? There are a few decent pick ups for sure

@Salmonberries:

It's a good question. Walters hasn't found the back of the net at anything near last season's rate. I haven't watched enough of Omaha's season to explain the drop-off. One factor might be Josh Archibald taking on an increased role in team scoring (I think he's got 29 goals so far). Unfortunately, Archibald is already drafted (another solid late rounder for the Pens). Walters is still top-five on his team and he's a big part of their leadership but he's not carrying the offense this season. He's still a solid all-around guy with smarts (up for a student athlete award this year).

If your question was simpler than that, and just wanting to know about availability:

Walters wasn't signed by a pro team last year, although there was interest and lots of rumors. So he's still available.

I'd be interested to hear more of an explanation for his goalscoring decline this season, if any of this board's college experts have insights. Looking at his stats, Walters is possibly set to put-up his lowest goals total, as a senior, of his entire four years with Omaha (although his assists numbers are still strong this season).

Ryan Haggerty

Ahti Oksanen

Van Brabant

are the 3 I like to see.

especially Haggerty a RH RW with decent size and strength on the puck.

Van Brabant is a good Alberta kid and I believe was in last years Frozen Four. Reminds me of a Kyle Clifford type.

Oksanen played for Espoo Blues in Finland and now has a year or 2 of North American style under his belt.....definately worth a look
