Worst Restaurant Delivery Experience Ever

Magikal

I doubt it has any effect in the long run. He is probably filling out a Burger King application right now and cursing the cheapskate who got him fired. Those are dead end jobs that can be easily replaced because they are already on the bottom and they have no effect on getting better real jobs.

All this is is the OP orders delivery and tips below common courtesy (aka average). The delivery boy who makes no money then complains (yeah he shouldn't have done it so vocally) and the OP who believes words are more painful than sticks and stones decides to go on a personal vendetta to get even because this was apparently such a traumatizing experience for him. The worker then gets fired.

All of this over a couple dollars.

Then the OP decides to complain about it more on a message board. Nether one of these guys acted like adults. The guy shouldn't have complained and the OP shouldn't have acted like the guy urinated in his pasta or just given him the standard 15%.

What the hell are you talking about? The guy delivered his food an hour later after the order. Then he embarrasses the OP in front of his co-workers and still wants 15%? Maybe the OP should kiss the delivery guy's ass and apologize too, even though he was 1 hour late, talked trash about him in front of his boss and had a d-bag attitude. In fact the OP seemed like a very reasonable guy. If it was me, I would've told him to go back, I don't need the food that has been ice cold because you can't deliver it faster than 1 hour traveling only 5 km from your restaurant. You make it sound like delivery people have the hardest job on the planet.

Are you stating this for all delivery drivers or just this place?

I can guarantee that not all drivers get paid by the hour. Most get paid per delivery and thats it. The ones that do get paid minimum wage are also expected to do prep, dishes, and whatever else needs to be done in the kitchen.

While this guy was out of line, not tipping the delivery driver is a bad idea. I used to deliver pizza years ago, and we remembered who didn't tip and/or who tipped bad.

If people can't be bothered to tip the delivery driver, go and pick up your own food, you'll find less spit and other substances in it.

Are you a delivery guy? Its kind of sad to see what kind of people work as delivery drivers and am not surprised. I would say some of them (not all) probably have the lowest IQ and couldn't find any better jobs or were not competent enough to get better jobs. Spitting on people's food makes you a scum, doesn't matter if the client tips or not.

Tip better or order from higher end places.

Don't order from a low end cheap place that highers low end minimum wage workers and expect excellent service with a smile. If the deliverer is complaining ignore him, have him removed, or tell him to eat a dick and laugh at his crapty life.

Half the time I order delivery the guy forget something or can't find the place or seems high.

You didn't give 15% and the guy complained... so what?

i don't have any bad delivery experiences as i barely ask for delivery, i usually pickup my food but i figured i would share this food related experience someone else posted on FB...

Introducing the $37 dollar sandwich from Giardino Pizzeria on 115 15th st. W. Lonsdale North Vancouver.

So I walk into this place hungry at 10pm. Order the pulled beef sandwich ($7.42 with tax) hand him a $50 he hands me back $12.60.... I tell him, he refuses to give me my change saying it is my fault. I said no you need to make sure you are giving proper change to the public that is part of your job, he tells me to call the cops...

I call the non-emergency line, cause let's face it its $30 bucks the woman on dispatch tells me its a civil dispute and they do not get involved ... Ok is there anything I can do ? No it is a civil dispute between you and the manager... Manager is his girlfriend standing right beside him laughing. No joke they were laughing the whole time . OK hang up. Talk to the guy again calmly he tells me angrily to get off the property "I am calling the police!!!" I say "Great please do", I leave the restaurant and wait on the sidewalk because that is his right to ask me to leave his property.

3 police cars show up, I tell one of the officers the situation and I say I know the dispatch just told me there is nothing to do about the $30 between me and the manager, I am sorry if you're wasting your time but I wasn't going to leave the sidewalk while this guy phones the police after stealing $30 from me( in the meantime I'm glancing inside and they are both still laughing away) I said to the officers, I'm glad they can have a sense of humour about this. The officers agree with me they apologize for this guy but still nothing they can do.

They ask if I want to press charges for a non $30 related issue, I say no sorry you guys had to come down here, the officers say "no no its fine we understand and now we know as well now to never come here" they suggest to me to spread this story over social media, just not to be slanderous. Of course. They apologize and say take care. Pick up the $37 dollar special sac off the sidewalk, get back to my buddies house and open the bag to a sandwich that looks like it was prepared by a toddler. Anyways, sorry for the long story I could not let this slide. The worst part was that, they kept laughing the whole time, this sandwich hustler knew what he was doing. Hope it was worth it you charlatans.

Please friends and common folk do me justice and never ever go to this place. I have never dealt with this kind of back alley sandwich hustle.

I used to deliver pizza when I was in my late teens, early 20's as a 2nd job so I could afford rent to live on my own. Not once did I state I spit in peoples food. Trust me though, it does happen.

Hell, I'd probably still do it to help pay down my mortgage faster, but it's not easy to make money from it anymore after you factor in all the costs associated.

I used to deliver pizza....I loved it...I didn't have to walk anywhere but to my car to the house back to my car . I got a gas allowance and got to cruz and listen to my tunes. I would take short deliveries on some days or take long ones if I didn't want to be doing dishes or food prep. once I made my delivery i would take a cruz down main and see who's all hangin around then back to the shop for more deliveries. The walk to and from my car each day with about a ten deliveries a shift does not compare to what a waitress does. lol

Seriously, right? The comments about delivery drivers all having low IQs, unable to do any other job, etc. are a little sickening.

I delivered food for a chinese place in Toronto for a couple years during high school on weekends. It was mostly a blast. Get paid to drive around listening to music, meet some interesting people (and of course the occasional asshole, but mostly nice people/good tips). A friend of mine would sometimes ride along in shotgun and play guitar if he was bored. They paid me by the delivery, so if there were no deliveries I didn't have to work at the restaurant, I could sit around reading a book and snacking on the buffet food.

I actually kind of miss it.

Just heard CBC radio on the way to work discussing the issue of tipping and its effect on the whole restaurant industry. Thought it was interesting to see the complexity. Here are some of the issues discussed:

1. Tips can create a huge wage gap between front house (servers) and back house (cooks and assistants).

2. Tipping can create territorial consequence ie. servers don't care for other customers not in her/his section.

3. One solution to #1 is tip pooling, ie. servers share some to back house but often servers resent it and leads to issues of honesty, transparency, and CRA reporting.

4. Serving industry has created a transient work force.

5. NA food industry has based tipping on 'friendly' server model vs. European model of competence and technical expertise.

6. Professor of hospitality advocated for elimination of tipping.

Probably more as I listened 1/2 way. Who would have thunk that a simple rant of pizza delivery guy would turn into such a thorough discussion?

Poor uneducated people feel they're entitled to anything because of certain privileged in the world.

That guy does not even care about disturbing your customers, and his boss doesn't care about making money.

You're dealing with degeneracy.

List of entitled worker jobs:

1. bus driver

Obviously there are exceptions but I find these jobs make people the biggest jerks

I have been on public transit once in my life, so my comment may not be the best. However, the bus drivers I have met all commented that they get spit on quite regularly by passengers. Other than a porn star, I don't know any other job where that is considered a regular occurance. If I were a bus driver, I would be quite unpleasant to be around as well.

In Korea and Germany people do not tip, so when I first came to Canada I did not tip for some time until I discovered it is expected.

Quite a number of countries like that. No tipping in New Zealand as well.

I am a good tipper, $4 on a $20 pizza, but I kinda get peeved at asking for tips for pickup orders. Memphis Blues in S.Surrey was pretty bad at that so I stopped buying food there(the quality got worse and worse) that place is dead now. I feel as though they labelled me as 'the guy that comes in, orders the same brisket meal and never tips' as it took longer and longer to get my food and I got less and less. The last brisket was 1/2 fat.

Tipping on takeout is an absurd concept. I would not frequent any place that expected it, regardless of how good their food was supposed to be.

This story has blown up and created a major crap storm for the business. They have been getting threats, and have getting harassed all over social media with some unfounded claims. The police even contacted Jeff L.

Either way, tha sanwich looks disgusting.

Here is the post from the Pizza Place:

We value our reputation for honesty and integrity and strive at all times to deliver high quality service to our customers.

On Friday evening, one of our customers claimed we had shortchanged him $30.00, within five minutes of the sale transaction.

We took the customer’s claim seriously, as any decent business would. We immediately checked our computer sales record. This allowed us to compare our total cash sales for the day to the cash in our till. There was a perfect match.

There is an old saying that “The customer is always right.” In this case, the customer was wrong. He was not short-changed.

With the benefit of hindsight, however, we probably should simply have paid the customer off and absorbed the $30 dollar loss. Perhaps letting the customer be “right” when he is “wrong” is simply one of the costs of accepting cash payments.

Following the incident, somebody posted defamatory lies about us on the Internet. These lies provoked many misinformed, critical comments. Some comments were hate-filled and ugly. Our staff have received threatening phone calls. We think most Canadians will agree that nobody should be subjected to this kind of cyber-bullying.

We would like to thank our loyal customers for their heartwarming emails. We invite others who do not know us yet to remember there are two sides to every story. Visit us, try our excellent food, our superb service, and judge for yourselves.

Manager, Giardino Pizzeria

So who is correct in all this? It also brings up an interesting point on how easy it would be to destroy a business over social media, even if they've done nothing wrong. Even though it has been pointed out they are charging the wrong tax rate which could be whole different problem.

I can only imagine the delivery people are paid peanuts, by the delivery or by the hour with all kinds of quotas and expectations for bare minimum wage. I don't even know what the arrangement is with gas. Guy having to go back and get a machine would have costed his own time, gas, or whatever so that's why it was more efficient for him to take your $10 and pay the $5 out of his pocket. Imagine yourself in his shoes, if order taker made mistake of not telling him, he's not going to get $$ or time back from him/her. Although I don't excuse rude behaviour, I think the system treats these folks really poorly. Not excusing it but just trying to understand, maybe some who work as delivery can chime in.

Edit: see ... poster just above me. Living on tips as delivery is slave labour. I

I get it - I had a job as a driver for awhile. My issue is that the driver was rude and completely disregarded the fact that it was restaurant that made the mistake.

My limited experience is that when the restaurant makes the mistake they will cover it. It's better business in the long run.

Cheap tipping gets you cheap service. Next time bring your own meal and be prepared if you can't tip properly. At least that's the impression I got here. Feel free to specify cost and tip amount so we can better understand.

Didn't realise cheap service included bitching and moaning to the "customer's" Boss that he did not tip enough and that he wants a bigger tip, or whatever...oh yeah......
