The problem with bringing in Virtanen next season isn't if he's ready or not, because he is. It's whether or not the Canucks expect him to do too much of the heavy lifting. Since the Canucks will have virtually no physicality or pushback beyond him next season when they deal Bieksa.

I gotta agree with Virt maybe being asked to be too physical right away in this scenario. It is clear he can bang but we really need him to snipe. I truly hope we see Virt rule it in camp and earn a spot.

I could see the same metamorphosis as with Horvat. Virt will showcase his wares on the fourth and in no time be on the third with some 2nd pp unit time if he shows us some dangles :D

Dorsett would be a great mentor for Virtanen. My question would be how much TOI will the 4th line get next year? Horvat's quick progress made rolling 4 lines easier for WD. Dorsett started there but moved up when injuries required him to. Worst case scenario is that Virtanen over does the physical aspect and gets labeled as simply a 'heavy'. Management was concerned about Horvat losing his offensive instincts

if he was pigeon holed as a defensive specialist. Similarly Torts tried to turn Kassian into an enforcer

which wrote off his offensive upside.

What a real fantasy line of Virtanen-Horvat-Kassian Kennins would be if Virtanen can stick.

FIFY :) that could possibly be one hell of an energy line !

i agree. People also seem to forget how fast Booth was before his ankle and knee injuries, was actually surprised at how slow he looked when coming back last year.

When Booth is on his game he hits hard. I remember his first game back in 2013 he looked like Volpatti, hitting everything in sight. Booth's shot isnt as good though so there's that.

I guess when people think of Booth they think of his play with Tortorella.

Booth is as frail as tissue. The comparison to Virtanen is sickening actually

Virtanen has 2 more gears than Booth ever had, hits like a train and can actually shoot. Booth has almost spent more time injured than playing in his career. Out of a possible 740 gp he has played only 502 . The last thing anyone in this organization wants is Virtanen to be anything like Booth.

Of course you wouldn't want him to be injured as much as Booth. That's like saying Salo is a horrible comparison to a young dman because he was injured alot.

Usually people dont like the comparison because of the following

-shot: agree, jake's shot is much better

-injuries: agree but nothing you can do about that

-speed: agree if you're talking about the Booth after the lockout. Injuries really slowed him down. Booth prior to injury was very fast and only slightly slower than Virtanen.

-mean streak: agree.

-physicality: Other than his first season here Booth averaged around two hits a game. Booth does hit pretty hard as well, Jake is more consistent though.

Basically the differences are minor(just shot and mean streak), they still play similar.

So combine pre injury Booth's offensive ability and post injury Booth's physicality and you have a solid powerforward. Wouldn't mind Jake getting around 60 pts a season while maintaining at least 2 hits a game.

However, I still think Kreider is the best comparison. Do not like the Carter or Perry comparisons.

He loves that aspect. I think he thrives running through guys like Ferland etc on a regular basis.

kempe scored 8 goals/9 points in 17 AHL playoff games - 29th overall

larkin scored 3 goals/5 points in 6 AHL playoff games - 15th overall

Both were on the first line and first PP on offensively minded teams.......

I don't recall Booth having a major shoulder surgery before he turned 19. He hurts that shoulder again and suddenly we drafted Raffi Torres

Don't they both play on offensive teams, on the top line, 1st unit PPs? And are deployed with the intent of scoring. Edited by N7Nucks

If he hurts that shoulder again, Raffi Torres would be a ceiling.

No doubt. And really, there is not much indicating Virtanen will be better than Torres. Torres was more highly touted when drafted. Scored 50% more goals his +1 draft year, and his first AHL playoff had 17 points in 20 games.

Torres actually scored 27 goals as a 23 year old. I thing somewhat his rambunctious style hurt his offensive game in the long run, and he settled in as a "physical 15" 3rd liner.

I really like the Virtanen pick, and I was a huge supporter of both Booth and Torres. If Virtanen becomes a 15 goal scorer, 3rd liner who is physical and speedy I will be satisfied, albeit not exactly happy about it.

This is the Jake Virtanen thread. What does the scoring of other teams' prospects have to do in any way with Virtanen's development?

If your answer is that you want to re-live the 2014 draft, then should we also post regularly about how P.K. Subban is doing, bumping the old Taylor Ellington prospect thread indefinitely? Could I suggest if you want to re-live the 2014 draft you bump the threads from that draft and spare those of us interested in the development of prospects of the Vancouver Canucks?

Virtanen if anything took a step back this season from his goal scoring ways. I don't see why he deserves to play up this year.

This raises a point, though I'd differ in approach focussing on where he'll best develop instead of where he deserves to play. Earning your spot is just one of the factors to consider in a player's development.

Some think NHL players develop best in the NHL. Imo that is best for some and not as good for others.

Virtanen physically is capable of playing in the NHL. I suspect that mentally and defensively he's closer to being ready than some give him credit for, but for other reasons wonder if he might be better in Jr again. Those are:

-offense-between his shoulder injury and his commitment to work on his defence, and possibly other factors (I've seen coaching and playing a different wing mentioned as potential factors in other CDC posts) his scoring didn't go up like one often sees from top prospects. It might not do him any harm to do a bunch of scoring in junior-in fact it may be good for his offensive creativity.

-some have mentioned that it would be nice if he isn't expected to carry too much of the team's deterrent weight in the NHL next season.

otoh, Virtanen's strength and speed are perhaps overly dominant in many situations in junior.

It will interesting seeing what happens in training camp.

I remember his first playoff game against LA and he absolutely hammered Richards.
