Bettman projects 2015/16 cap will be $71.5 mill

Throughout the regular season, the salary cap for 2015-16 has been a subject of speculation due to the decline in the Canadian dollar. We've become used to dramatic annual jumps in the ceiling, with the obvious exception of the new CBA resulting in a rollback. From 2013-14 to 2014-15 for example, the cap went from $64.3 million to $69 million.

Those climbs have been important for teams that spend to the ceiling as it gives them critical maneuvering room. For those squads, the good news is it is expected to go up again but not by as much as originally hoped.

With the season and most of the first round done, Gary Bettman is projecting that the salary cap will end up being around $71.5 million, per Sportsnet's Chris Johnston. That's in contrast to the December estimate of about $73 million.

The modest increase is particularly problematic for the Chicago Blackhawks as Patrick Kane's and Jonathan Toews' matching eight-year, $84 million contracts are set to kick in next season. Although they aren't the only squad that will have some difficulty finding a way to stay under the ceiling.

This could lead to more trades like the New York Islanders' acquisition of defensemen Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk from Chicago and Boston respectively prior to the start of the campaign. Those trades gave the Islanders a significant boost and likely only happened because the Bruins and Blackhawks were in a tough cap position.

$2.5 mill increase from this years $69 mill cap. Like this more than the $73 that was projected earlier on this year which would've helped the top teams more than anything getting their finances under control.

Unfortunately without capgeek, this announcement is meaningless to m

Am I the only person that thinks it is strange no new credible replacement has been started?

spotrac looked ok and I've used nhlnumbers but neither are close to being as good as cap geek.

spotrac is okay, you can't do trades unless you've got a pad of paper and a calculator next to you. It's about as close as one's gonna get.

CapGeek was a work of art. You can't really replace works of art.

Bettman is now quoted as saying the cap is likely to rise 5% from this year's $69 million, settling in at about $71 million.

Because a 5% increase from $69 million is $72.45 million rather than $71 million I looked at several sources to see if Bettman was misquoted. All the sources I looked at had the same words, though the 5% reference was often in a different paragraph from the $71 million reference. Some sources are:

There may well be some deals available similar to the Islanders picking up Leddy and Boychuk last fall. Unfortunately, the Canucks aren't as things stand now in any position to take advantage of those deals and any moves the Canucks might want to make to dump salary will face competition from other teams wanting or needing to dump salary.

The Hawks are going to have to start dismantling to fit their Toews and Kane contracts, and it sucks because we can't take advantage of it.
