Let's not jump to conclusions, McCann still hasn't faced multiple full NHL rosters without rookies filling in all over. He's very undersized still and Vey has bulked up and has nice heady playmaking upside, if Vey gets the spot, so be it, we can trade him or send him to the Comets if we have to now or down the road.

If the midget gaudreau can do it why can't McCann??

What I want to happen.

McCann gets 9 games. Goes back to junior

Virtanen gets 9 games. makes team

Gaunce makes team

Higgins is traded after he get off the DL

Vey gets traded

Kenins is extra forward. ( he has a one way contract so he would have to go through waivers to go down )

Hutton makes team

What will happen

McCann gets sent down trm

Corrado makes team

Gaunce makes team till Higgins gets back then he goes to Utica

Hutton goes to Utica

Beiga and Cranknell go to utica

McCann wins most of his board battles and Vey looses just about everyone of them. If Vey bulked up over the summer he sure isn't showing it except getting slower.

Kenins doesn't have to clear waivers to go to Utica.

Being on a one way just means they'll have to pay him his NHL salary in Utica. Something ownership might not like.

Not a good comparison to a 5 foot 5 Gaudreau who WAS 150 pounds then. McCann is 6 feet and around 180, a skinny frame, Gaudreau is more just small. What Gaudreau did doesn't mean every undersized, young, and skilled forward will transition to NHL physicality right away.

Before you start listing all the vets that you want cut Gramps, Benning was talking about rookie prospects when he was referring to the 1st criteria that a player must pass; defensive responsibility.

Vey and Higgins and Hansen have jumped through that hoop already.

Having said that, Benning won't throw away any assets for nothing. So in the short term, the players who don't have to clear waivers can be sent down. This means that he can keep McCann, Virtanen, Baertschi, Corrado and Vey on the team.

Next step, he'll give McCann and Virtanen their 9 games which will show whether they really should stay or not. If yes, great. If not, they can go back to junior and play in the worlds.

After that decision is made, up to 2 players who were sent down previously who deserved to be on the team can come back from Utica. (Gaunce, Kenins, etc)

Lastly, if there is still somebody in Utica who deserves to be on the team ahead of somebody who is already on the team, trades can be looked at.

There is no need to lose players for nothing by being hasty. If it is done over a couple of months or even by the trade deadline they will be better off.

Hutton has earned a spot, but I don't think will be on the opening roster until an injury happens. It won't hurt to play 20-25 minutes a game down there until there is room on the D-core this season. There will be room. There is always injuries every season.

Kenins was a bull out of the gate last year, struggled near the end, and had a great playoffs on Horvat's line. Having said that, he hasn't done enough this season to warrant a spot. He can go back to Utica and be a call up again this year to show he can do it again.

Vey has done absolutely nothing to demonstrate he is NHL material this preseason. I feel bad for him, but really don't want him on the team if this is how he'll play.

Gaunce may or may not make the team right out of the gate, but will play NHL minutes this season. Sending him down at the start wouldn't hurt if there is not enough roster space.
