SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Glad to see Olli keep the streak going. His point was the primary assist on Heikkinen's (his D partner) late goal with 22 second remaining (which cut the lead to 4-3). Juolevi played 18:43 TOI and finished with one assist (primary), 1 SOG, even, and 2 PIM. Edited November 3, 2017 by SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME

SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Juolevi-Heikkinen have been promoted to TPS's first pairing per today's lineup chart: http://liiga.fi/ottelut/2017-2018/runkosarja/160/kokoonpanot/ Currently playing (tied 0-0) vs. Kärpät. Warhippy
For reference right now and I know they are a year apart Juolevi with todays point has 7 points in 9 games Heiskanen has 8 points in 9 games. Relevant because they're in the same league and both potential WJC and Olympic hopefuls.

In most years, he'd be the clear #1 scorer among U20 Ds. However, he just happens to be playing in a year when an 18yo (Heiskanen 8 points in 9GP) and a 17yo (Anttoni Honka 5 points in 5GP) are flirting with all-time record breaking seasons.
Horvats_Big_Head
It's great that he's doing well, but we should just let him to continue and not get ahead of ourselves. I remember a guy by the name of Tommeres who was doing very well over in Europe and he failed to improve. I know he wasn't anywhere near the 5th overall pick, but still. How much does Juolevi’s size (6’3 200) play into his favour versus the smaller Heiskanen (6’1 180) and Honka is listed as a 5’9 170 smurf? I hope Olli is playing well defensively on top of the points - being promoted to top pair bodes well.

Big headache, Q the negative POV with a reference to a former prospect that was a late rounder as compared to our highest drafted defender in 2 decades. First off, OJ is showing well in his first pro debut and would be on course to break records of it wasn’t for another exceptional recent draft pick. IMO it’s great to see OJ get going after a rough camp. He appears to be back on course and only see positives. FYI There is almost no comparison between OJ and Tommerens (sp) other than they were European, play defence and are/were Canucks prospects. That would be like comparing EP to Nathan Smith. Both are/were centres, both are/were scoring lots of points in their leagues and both were/are Canucks prospects. His size probably doesn't give Juolevi a significant advantage when it comes to points production. Smaller, offensive-minded young Ds usually get paired with with a big, veteran guy who can shelter them at 5v5 and allow them to feast on the PP and in offensive situations. Where it has likely helped him out is his rapid ascension to the top pairing. In less than 10 games, he's gone from limited use on the 3rd pairing to munching big minutes as a primary role player in TPS's lineup. I suspect that his last year in London (where he shifted to more of a shutdown role and also was tasked with sheltering a 17yo D partner), as well as his work in the gym over the summer (getting to 200 lbs), are big factors in how quickly he's been able to earn his coaches' trust. The offensive production is more about his intelligence and natural abilities. He just needed some development time (which we knew when he was drafted) to build a "pro level" body and round out some aspects of his overall game. Now we're finally starting to see signs of everything coming together. Still a ways to go. And he won't truly be meeting expectations (as a #5 pick) until he's playing 20+ minutes per game as an everyday player for the Canucks. But he's tracking quite well right now and IMO is right on schedule from his draft year (where most reasonable projections said he was a few development years away from making the NHL). 1 1
Popular Post SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Played 22:22 TOI today. No points (and his scoring streak ends at 4 games). 1 SOG, 2 PIM, even. Now 7 points through 10 GP. TPS loses 5-3. Worth noting that Juolevi kept a clean sheet for 22+ minutes and all 5 goals against were surrendered when he was on the bench.

For me, this is at least as important as any stats that are put up. We have a hard time seeing the role being played since we don't have access to watch all the games, but the time on ice and top line pairing are for me the big news, especially after not getting a lot of games early in the season. Olli Juolevi with no points in today's game has 7 points in 10 games. Both are currently playing top pairing minutes for their respective Liiga teams -- the difference is that Heiskanen has been playing top minutes since last season as a 17 year old. Juolevi has had to adjust to the international ice sheet and Finnish style of play. If we were choosing a defenseman last draft, I was hoping for Heiskanen. He is such a smooth skater and has great vision and IQ in both the defensive and offensive zones. I questioned how much offense he could produce, but I knew he was more offensive-minded than Juolevi, who looks to be more of a two-way defenseman. The way I think it, I would say Juolevi is similar to Edler and Heiskanen is similar to Ehrhoff back in 2009-2011. Edler was bigger and better defensively yet still able to put up 30-40 points and quarterback the powerplay. Ehrhoff had trouble at times with bigger forwards and in battles along the boards or in front of the net, but was very good with the puck on his stick. Both Juolevi and Heiskanen have fared very well playing against men in the Finnish league, but the NHL is a whole different animal. To his credit, Juolevi shutdown Logan Brown and Gabe Villardi in the OHL playoffs last year and has the size to handle bigger forwards when he makes the NHL. Big time bust potential if he can’t take the harder play in North America. Don’t care if he wins the MVP over there. We tried a Smurf last season, who put up a lot of points in Europe, and that didn’t go very well. Juiolevi is NHL size, is smart, and puts up points. Much better pick - BY FAR!
