the number of actual trans people who will be involved in this will be a tiny proportion of the prison community, thats the 'few'.

Stories like this are much too reactionary and people like to say this is all "Trudeau" like he could just walk in and make all this happen  that idea is quite funny to me

But like the story actually said this is the result of years of collaboration between multiple groups involved in prison rehabilitation so I'm going to just go ahead and assume these folks see a real need for this.  (A joint statement from Prisoners' Legal Services, the Correctional Service of Canada and the Canadian Human Rights Commission said the reforms are the result of years of collaboration.)

I get that there may not be that many "trans" people but the impact goes far beyond that.  IN allowing prisoners to choose their gender for purposes of where they will be incarcerated, the potential for abuse is high and the implications for some others, significant

The article also says that the changes to the law regarding discrimination led to these changes so it would appear that regardless of the outcome of discussions and/or collaboration, this was going to happen.  It would also seem to indicate that it was, in fact, changes made by Trudeau's Liberals that led to this step being a done deal.

"These changes come after the federal government added "gender identity and expression" to the list of prohibited grounds for discrimination in the Canadian Human Rights Act last June."

You fool! It's all Trudeau's fault and the posters on CDC are infinitely more informed on this, and every other subject, than specialists and stakeholders. Haven't you noticed?

Oh darn, maybe you're correct. Its a Canadian deep state plot of some kind? Maybe a PC false flag? I'm new at this.

I also don't see these 3 groups going out of their way to cause harm to the general prison population or look for ways to put women at risk either, I don't know the details but I highly doubt that some creepo rapist dude can suddenly declare he's a women and get transferred to a women's prison at have his way with people.

Oh, sure, bring facts and logic into it. Sheesh.

Sure, the government of the day always helps to pass whatever changes that advocates have had in the works for years. Harper did that with his whole "double bunking" thing overcrowding jails.... somehow thats going to help? yikes.

I wish the story had more detail on the process because that seems to be where this is going off into the weeds a bit. I doubt its as simple as someone making a verbal declaration and saying 'now transfer me' particularly if there is a history or risk of that person being a sexual predator.

i  guess it doesn't bother me because I don't see the inclusion of trans people as a big deal. They are who they are, its not for me to judge them. I don't think anyone would choose that difficult a life if it wasn't who they are.

This is so backward. How can a great country like Canada still only recognize male and female? We need different prisons for the 60+ different genders, anything else is completely transphobic, sexist, and bigoted

/sarcasm

Turdeau won't have a second term.

You're worried about this?  Of all things?  Really?

2 things.

1.  They're criminals, who the hell cares

and

2.  He will have a second term because Scheer looks like he shouldn't be allowed around children or snack foods and his religious ideology alienates him from anywhere not northern Ontario Saskatchewan or Alberta

To be clear, I am not upset about the inclusion of "trans" people but the potential for abuse and the implications for others.  The devil is usually in the details so we will have to wait and see just how the determination is to be made.

Having had an uncle who was a counsellor in the prison system, I lack your faith that this will be a benign change.

curious.... why do you think trans people shouldn't be discriminated against? I guess if you don't believe they are real, but I'm pretty sure they aren't like Santa Claus.

Does he have a history of

promoting anti abortion

shoving religion at constituents

using religion as a talking point or political weapon

Anti LGBTQ statements

No.  Scheer does

Cons might pick up 5-8 more seats, but the likelihood is that more people from the NDP who are absolutely flabbergasted at the idiocy of picking a leader that STILL doesn't hold a seat will vote Liberal than ever.

Sorry to say but if they'd have gone with Raitt or Rempel or even the libertarian they'd be ok, but Scheer is unelectable outside of the rural base

yah I bet he has some stories that would keep a person up at night.

I guess I also prefer to see us here in Canada try to work these things out first, vs. say a US approach where people can openly discriminate and freak out over bathrooms.
