Jets are in for a rough year.

They're going to have to make a trade to fill out their lineup. My guess is they will have to overpay Laine, but will trade him if someone will overpay for him with talented youth/picks and lower contracts. Their D is hurting with the loss of Trouba and Meyers, and they would be the perfect partner to give us a first for Tanev (they are decimated on RD) if they had cap room but with 16 players signed and 19 mil in space, and Connor and Laine to sign, there isn't room.

Perhaps Ehlers will be moved to keep them both and free up cap room

I’m assuming that they have some good young D ready to step in.

They’ve had 6 top-4 dmen in their lineup for a couple of years now so it wouldn’t have been easy for them to break in earlier.

They’ve got Heinola and Stanley coming but that doesn’t help them next year.

Hellyubuck is gonna have to stand on his head all season if they plan on going with that D. Their goals against is gonna take a big spike.

Not sure anyone is looking to take Ehlers off their hands either. But if they can find a deal for a young Dman and then sign Gardiner they might be okay.

They’re high on Sami Niku, who’s played incredibly well in the AHL, but who knows if he can translate immediately next year, or if he’ll need a few years.

They’ve also got Dylan Samberg, who the entire hockey community is incredibly high on. Not a high end offensive defenseman, but word is that he’s going to be elite as a defensive defenseman. However, he’s going back for another year of college to try and win a 3rd straight Frozen Four title, so he won’t be ready until 2020.

Not true. TSN1290 has been reporting for a few months now teams are calling the most on him. While Kyle Connor is better offensively, Ehlers is the more complete hockey player, as he’s terrific on both sides of the puck. And the fact that he’s locked up for a modest $6M is enticing to teams as well, as cap friendly contracts are at a premium.

Not sure how “complete” his game is but he was a complete no show in the playoffs. It’s obvious he shies away from the game when things get more physical.

After a 37 point season I’m sure teams are a little hesitant to take him on for 6 million. Could be another Nylander like contract (similar point totals).

The playoff numbers are concerning for sure, but if you watch his game, he doesn’t shy away from a physical game. He is one of the Jets most responsible 200 foot players.

Good deal for the Jets.

44% ozone starts for a 23 year old defenseman.

26 pts

138 hits.

21 minutes/game

2:52 of pk ice time - 1 second less than team-leading Staal last year.

I'm guessing this player only looks better in the context of playing in Winnipeg.

My bet would be that this turns out to be a helluva bridge deal for the Jets - at a time when they can use good value relative to cap hit.
