[Discussion] Value of UFA Blake Coleman?

Recommended Posts

I am gutted that WPG has resigned Lowry as I felt he was perfect fit as our next 3C. Guess WPG felt the same!

I really don't want to go back down the road of having Sutter at 3C (even on a cheap contract) with his history of injuries and inability to create offense. I want someone more dynamic.

I am thinking more and more about whether the Canucks should look to make 3 defensively-responsible scoring lines centred by EP40, Horvat and Miller.

Plus a sheltered 4th line with a rookie 4C such as Lind or Jasek.

I am wondering whether someone like Blake Coleman could be an affordable top 9 UFA for our roster. Versatile, plays all 3 positions. Dynamic and fast. Only 5'11" but 200lb and plays with an edge (even drops the gloves). Plays PP and PK. Plays a 200ft game. He has been underpaid for a while. Proven playoff performer.

What is he worth as a UFA?

Would he realistically want to be a Canuck?

Do we want him on our team?

For example:

Coleman-Pettersson-Boeser

Pearson-Horvat-Hoglander

Vesey-Miller-Podkolzin

Highmore-Lind-Motte

40 points/ full season kind of player who steps up in the playoffs would probably be too pricey.  He could be a puck retrieval player next to Pete and would probably fit well but that should only be looked at if they've already re-signed Pete and Hughes (plus I wonder if he would take another discount to stay with TB?).  Not a bad idea though, and it would be nice to gradually have the lineup look something like that.

I wonder if Coleman is ready to get paid, rather than sticking with TBL on a cheap deal. He has been on cheap deals for his whole career so far. Time to cash in as a UFA.

On the following assumptions, we could have $3-4m to spend on a player like Coleman:

- Virtanen is selected by Seattle

- Resign Pettersson & Hughes to bridge deals, say $7m & $6m respectively

- Resign Edler (2.5m), Hamonic (2.2m), Tryamkin (2m), Juolevi (1m), Vesey (1m), Lind (1m), Podz (0.925m)

- Buy out Eriksson. Waive Roussel

- Beagle & Ferland on LTIR

He’d be good! I’m thinking Coleman, Wennberg or Sutter at a reduced rate.

Wennberg is very interesting. But I feel like the Panthers will get him resigned. He is doing very well for them and they have the cap space to get it done, so I think we may miss out on having a crack at Wennberg in FA.

6M for 6 years sounds right

Very funny?  :picard:

He's more productive this year than Tanner Pearson!

Blake Coleman has been less productive, if anything, over his career than Tanner. Also a year older.

But CDC would hail him a hero!

Don't forget your NTC/ NMC.

Well he does kill penalties.

he's probably looking for a Pearson type deal. Yeah I said it.

I came to say the same thing. Coleman has a few more grey hairs, a 91' baby, one less cup. See above ^^.

Its actually not that far out, in way less games & a sep chart of hits and blocks still does not tell a different story;

if we could get him at around 3 mil it would be a nice add for sure.

Coleman turns 30 in November.

Benning says the team will be truly competitive in 2 years.  Feels like the wrong age group.  During the next 2 years the team needs to find / develop players who will be ready by the opening of that window.  If you fill the roster with vets, it’s not going to give that much of an opportunity to these younger players - eg similar to this season with Juolevi or MacEwen.

Benning says they were so eager to sign Pearson because they will be younger next season.

Yes good point about his age...just watch Benning resign Sutter (who is 33 in Feb)...   :picard:

We don't have a 3C in the system   This is one area we will need to fill with a UFA or with a trade.  Coleman will likely get a 3 x 3 or even 3 x 4 deal...risky.   Yes it would be a offensive upgrade over Sutter, defensively not likely, that's Sutters bread and butter and he's got value.   I see Sutter getting a deal to replace Beagle.    And feel the team is going to need to bite the bullet and use one of their better prospects and possibly a pick to fill the 3C spot.   Unless we go for a winger and use Miller which for sure is another option.    We already have a built in 3C...if Podz is as good as we hope he is, this creates options to play Miller like TB did.

We also need a RHD. Jett W not that advanced?

He's done very well.   The news i'm getting is Rathbone is somewhat carrying him, but it's a very solid line and some "experts" still feel very highly of him.    Made one top hundred list to start the season, for sure he's developing and getting better.   Don't watch him play do can't say what i've seen personally, but from what THN and the Hockey Writers have to say about him he's either a "progressing player" or " a lock for the top four in a year or two " (meaning next year or the following one).    Hockey Writers had him one spot ahead of OJ to start the season (also still in their top 100 list)... so hell yeah there is still hope for him ... games gone from two-way to defensive specialist (Tanev type)...and for sure we need that.
