Beary Sweet
Ugh Motte is gone. Oh well. He was a solid bottom 6 player for us since we acquired him. There’s also always a possibility that we could re-sign him in the offseason during free agency. Good to get something for a player on a expiring deal. Wish Motte all the best in NY! Sanj
You know, a part of me (unless some very late registered trade comes in) wonders if people just don't want to play here or trade with us. They know the market is desperate for good players, they know we need to make changes and are trying to play hardball. Knowing we won't give up a Hughes or maybe just getting lowball offers, they are content to let us sit be. Or maybe people just don't want to play in Vancouver and JR/PA are facing a challenge we aren't aware of. Whatever it is, I will patiently wait and hope one day we win a cup before I die.... This was just giving him away and basically tell the team don’t even try to keep pushing. Hope everyone’s happy with a 4th round pick though. Enjoy the next three years as we rotate plug fourth liners in and out of the lineup. In this economy, someone will give Motte that money. There are players in the $3M range that are not at the tier he is. He believe's he's a solid 3rd line player. Problem is, we're pretty good on the third line. The 4th line, where he slots for us, perpetually, should have no one in the 2-2.5M range. AND it should be a rotating set of plugs or effective players at league minimum. If he's asking too much and your'e not going to re-sign him..... They also replaced him "for this season" with pending UFA Richardson for free! T-Bo
And I don’t feel sorry for his team mates. If they actually collectively showed up the last three games, giving them a half decent shot at making the playoffs, it might have given management second thoughts about keeping him, even if he was then thought of as a rental and taking on the risk of losing him in the off season. Even in a one and done scenario, it would have been worth it to management to excite the fan base for next year. Motte is a good player, but seriously, he was not so good that he was going to be the difference maker to help this Team win like 15 of the next 20 games. He was a valuable piece for sure, but there are lots of other broken parts we are stuck with, that were just going to continue to moot his contributions. We got something for him, even if it just a sweetener for a bigger deal down the road. 1

Phat Fingers
Tank is in? The value in Motte to the club is way more than a 4th. The only bonus is the better draft position.

Trade a pending UFA for a decent pick and it goes nuts. It's schizophrenic. If Motte is the only thing keeping this team from making, not making the playoffs, we have bigger issues. I'm happy with the pick, don't over complicate it. I believe it's because a lot of us value Motte far more than a 4th. Regardless what the market price is for a player like him, his contribution to our team and his chemistry with Lam and Highmore means much more than getting a low pick back. He was one of the very few players that provided consistent effort any given night, and that seems to be, unfortunately, such a rare quality on our team. Regardless, if Motte made it clear he isn't returning next year, it is what it is. At least we got value back. If this was purely for the purpose of making cap space to overpay someone, then it's an issue.

Popular Post bigbadcanucks
The team as it is right now is nothing more than a bunch of pretenders. The Bruce factor was carrying some cachet, but the players on this team has essentially shown its true identity over the past three games. And that's a .500 team that shows up half the time and gets its @$$ saved by Demko's goaltending (and if Demko isn't standing on his head, the team is sunk). Losing Motte for a fourth round pick is nothing more than a footnote to the season. Motte at anything less than $1.75M AAV is an asset; Motte at anything more than $1.75M is a liability. If the reports that they couldn't come to an agreement are true, I'm glad they moved Motte for a fourth. Highmore, Lockwood, and possibly Jasek and/or Karlsson, and quite possibly Hoglander (if he can re-invent himself) have made Motte at cap hit above $1.75M redundant. As much as it might hurt short term (i.e., I'm a Motte fan and like his heart, skill and tenacity), this is the right move. Same goes for the Dermott in and Hamonic out moves. Saving $1.5M cap hit, getting younger, gaining cost control, getting a more durable player, and potential for a fit that works for the Canucks vs. a player in/out of the lineup and older is a no-brainer. As whole milk-like as these moves have been, IMHO, they position the team more favorably. I'm just a little disappointed that the Canucks couldn't unload more passengers.
