I think you're both right.  JR is grouchy about things getting out in our market and therefore the backhanded tone to his comments.  He is probably also learning that we pay attention to his words a little more than they did in Pittsburgh and Carolina.  I'm sure that he does indeed intend to say less going forward.

This has nothing to do with Bruce's personality or what I think of Bruce. This, to me, has everything to do with how things were handled and I would think the same thing of most coaches in Bruce's position. It wasn't fair and a rather questionable decision in my opinion.

 

I'm historically a defender of management as I believe there are a lot of things we don't see under the hood; however, I can't defend this.

Don't see a logical reason for a coaching change? Buddy,  this team is a freaking mess right now. Very few coaches survive a record like this at this stage of the season during a season with seemingly so much potential. The only coaches who survive a record like ours are coaches hired specifically by management to oversee a few seasons of turmoil in an effort to develop younger players or to shepherd a team going through a rebuild. Bruce is neither.

Wasn't extended.

...and he had to prove that last year's closing run wasn't a matter of many pucks finding the back of the net and a goalie having to make 40 saves a night, 25-30 of those saves from high danger areas.

That's the way they saw it, that's the way it played out.

 

Don't like how it was handled? Sure, the leak to the media sucked but that was more reporters acting like parasites than managers doing anything out of the ordinary. When a coach is on thin ice, managers are always in conversation with any potential replacement coach not currently employed. Especially if you already have your next guy pegged as the one to move in. And especially if he's already on your favourites contact list on your phone. This is totally normal. It's how these guys operate. Every coach gets fired. This team looks terrible. The coach needed to go. End of story.

 

I'm reserving judgement on this group until next training camp. I like some of the moves they've made and bringing in Lazar/Studnicka/Stillman/Joshua types shows some consistency in the types of players they are after with regards to skating and age profiles. Not game breakers but at least consistent with the view.

The only move that seems like an outlier to me is the Miller signing. That really stands out as a deviation from the path. Maybe the future of the team is built around him as a member off the leadership core and he evolves and excels as the team goes through their transition. For the time being though, that signing seems odd and ill placed, even though JT is my second favourite player on the team after Petey.

Fair. The way he said his honesty “upsets some people” came across that way a bit to me.

 

Speaking of honesty with the media, I liked how PA responded about Bo’s agent having permission to talk to other teams. “I believe that’s between me and his agent to discuss.”  That kind of answer is sets a boundary, but you can also read between the lines. Seems that PA took better notes in the PR prep session than JR did.

He said Allvin is in charge of the team. That kind of means trades as well.

 

That would fit because the actions have been opposite what Rutherford has said.

 

Funny that Hogs and Pods in the minors is considered bad by Allvin. I thought the general consensus was time in the minors was a good thing and his statements kind of reinforced that idea until he stated the opposite about Hogs and Pod.

Having now listened to the conference, I don't have a ton of faith still.

They keep talk about the issue with the fans being mad is that we haven't won a Cup in the city.  Yes we want to win, but the way we do business as an organization is more important in this market than most other places.  Only one team wins each year, but 31 teams lose each year and you have to do your business in a way that your fans can be proud of and want to wear your logo.

It was repeated that they think it was a coaching issue that the bottom half of the lineup wasn't performing well.  Do they really not know yet that it is a roster issue?  Suddenly Stillman is going to become a good defenceman?  Who exactly on the bottom six is pushing to get more minutes?  You want to play with structure and play the right way, but Hoglander and Podkolzin were mishandled?  They were bumped down a league so that they could spend time developing that side of their game... there isn't practice time in the NHL to teach them.

There were a couple of allusions to moving players out by the deadline, but nothing they have done shows me they can execute on that.

PA is legendary at eloquently saying absolutely nothing!  I don't even mean that as an insult lol.  The guy takes politicians to school in this regard.

Similar but Torts rides his top guys for big minutes.  Tocchet stressed that our top guys minutes have to come way down from where Bruce played them.  So go hard and play fast for the minutes the player is out there.  No coasting to conserve energy.  I can see Garland’s and OEL’s minutes going up.  Got to tak3 some of those minutes off Miller and Hughes.

That's fair, I'm just at the point where it's time to start looking at picking a different team.  JR has disgraced the team so much I'm not sure it's possible to repair the damage once he and the rest of his clown crew are gone.

Hmm I was just having a chat with my wife about this.  She said the same thing.   I'm not sure where the limit is...somewhere between  Holocaust and chernobyl I guess.  Maybe just get more creative with words and not using nasty metaphors?  I dunno maybe I'm just cheesed at the media.  Like a 6 year old punching his baby brother in the face and looking at mom all innocent "what? I don’t know if this is about fighting tough.  But more like the Twins and being hard to play against tough.  To take a hit to make a play tough.  Toughness of character to do what it takes (on and off the ice) to be the best player you can be and help support your teammates.
